1:44 - "dago talk" was a slang term used from the 18th century, which was a derogatory term used to mean how Italian or Spanish people talked "nonsense".

Sausage? SAUSAGE???!!! I remember watching Blackadder with my brother for the first time as a kid and both of us bursting into uncontrollable laughter when that came up. Good times.

I love this skit. English is simply the language spoken by the English people.... not what Samuel Johnson decreed it is.

Apart from the absolute comedy genius I always think the costumes were beautiful too. Absolutely spot on and the sets.

My dad and I have always said that we will return interfrastically for over 40 years now! To the point where our entire extended family just accept it as a common expression, my eight year old daughter even uses it. If a comedy script has a throw away line that can last three generations it's proof positive that the writing was incredible

Some might recall that is was Lord Chesterfield who applauded Dr. Johnson's Dictionary when it was done after 10 years work, and Chesterfield tried to take credit for being Johnson's ''patron'' over that ten years, when in fact he had not contributed even a farthing toward Johnson's expenses

A classic scene - brilliantly acted, briliant timng. From Blackadder's first interjection: 'every single one, sir?', it's comedy gold.

Oh lawd. The _mob_ is the only 'character' guaranteed to be "high-strung", "unreliable", and "ill-educated". Terry Pratchett suggested that the intelligence of a crowd is roughly related to the square-root of the number of its members. A clever metric, but clearly too generous. This might be overly simplistic, as well, but I'd hazard: ∝ 2 - sqrt(n) where n = number in crowd. Case-in-point, the events described here - as Clive apparently "seems to suggest" in her "retort in form", so-to-speak, and you further elaborate on. 👍 Thanks for the interesting bit of historical information!

Prince George: Ah, Dr. Johnson, damn cold day! Dr. Samuel Johnson: Indeed it is sir - but a very fine one, for I celebrated last night the encyclopedic implementation of my pre-meditated orchestration of demotic Anglo-Saxon. Prince George: Nope - didn't catch any of that. Dr. Samuel Johnson: Well, I simply observed, sir, that I'm felicitous since during the course of the penultimate solar sojourn, I terminated my uninterrupted categorisation of the vocabluary of our post-Norman tongue. Prince George: Well, I don't know what you're talking about, but it sounds damn saucy, you lucky thing! I know some fairly liberal-minded girls, but I've never penultimated any of them in a solar sojourn, or for that matter, been given any Norman tongue. Blackadder: I believe, sir, that the Doctor is trying to tell you that he is happy because he has finished his book. It has apparently taken him ten years. Prince George: Well, I'm a slow reader myself.

The accounts of Jesus used the common Greek. When William Tyndale was translating the Bible into English he wanted it to be understood by a ploughboy. I struggled at University, I worked at Pearl and we had a lady come in from the Plain English Campaign and I loved what she was saying about making everything as simple as we can. At another training event we had a fire alarm, before it started and the lady was saying that she hates complicated language to explain something simple. Driving can be overwhelming for some of my customers so I love breaking it down into simple chunks. One was not able to read or write, another didn’t go to Secondary School and the simple way they wanted to be taught I used on everyone. I think that is why I find this clip so hilarious…

I missed the news until rewatching this. Robbie Coltrane was a cornerstone. Everything that is good and noble in this world must pass. The vile and nasty is all that lives forever. How are Piers Morgan and Jeremy Clarkson still alive while someone like Robbie Coltrane must leave us? It's difficult to deal with. This is not good news. Bring me some other news. 🙁

I was surprised when I found out this is Robbie Coltrane. Even though I had watched the show years ago, I only knew Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid. When I revisited this episode of Blackadder, I was blown away by his acting range and ability to change his voice and accents. RIP Legend and beloved actor Robbie Coltrane. You will never be forgotten.
