政府新聞處擔任政府的公共關係顧問，負責政府的出版、宣傳及新聞工作。該處是政府與傳播媒介之間的橋樑，並通過傳媒提高市民對政府政策、決定和工作的認識。
The Information Services Department serves as the Government's public relations consultant, publisher, advertising agent and news agency. It provides the link between the Administration and the media and, through the latter, enhances public understanding of government policies, decisions and activities.

《香港政府新聞網》news.gov.hk，以多媒體形式傳達政府新聞及資訊，除發放最新消息外，亦透過特寫、圖片、短片及連結為市民提供有關政府服務的資訊及背景資料。此外，政府新聞處在社交媒體 Facebook、RU-vid、Twitter、Instagram、WeChat和微博等亦設立了帳戶，方便與市民溝通。
