Hi there, my name is Fawn and I'm a gouache artist and nature illustrator from Texas. I love painting landscapes, sunsets, and the occasional surreal portrait. While I mostly use gouache, I also dabble in digital art and other things.
I am just trying this paper for the first time. The front of the cold press page as it is seen when lifting the pad's cover is similar to the back of the Arches paper. Which side of the Hahnemuhle paper is correct to use?
I like Hahnemuhle a lot. I have never been a fan of Arches because the texture is too rough. It used to be the gold standard but now we have lots of papers of equal quality to choose from.
Great idea to post them side to side for comparison. Comparing two different weights is apples to oranges. Arches (pronounced "arsh" has 140 pound, also. Thanks for taking the time to post this
Thank you for your gouache review! I'm considering buying Talens gouache, but I'm sensitive to preservatives like MBIT or MIT. Could you please let me know if the ingredients list is displayed on the back of the tube and if these specific ingredients are listed? Thank you.
I’ve been looking and I can’t find anything that would suggest they contain MBIT or MIT. They don’t have the ingredients on the back. The binder they use is made from dextrose. They do have a safety data list on their website, so you might be able to find that information there or email their support team to find out. All of their gouache as far as I can see has the official AP Seal on them to indicate they are non toxic. Hopefully you can get a better response from them 😅
I just bought a 12 set of what i assume is student quality for 16$ in Hawaii and it looks like blick sells the same set for $12. If anyone is interested in trying the student grade.
I believe Hahnemühle makes a drawing/pastel paper that might work for pastel/oil pencil. It’s called Skizze/Pastell 130gsm, 60lb paper, however I haven’t tried it myself. Arches Huille paper is advertised as working for both oil and oil pastels, but again I haven’t tried it before. I wouldn’t recommend using watercolor paper for oil pastel/pencil because it will likely have too much grain texture to get the results you may want
I usually take out each paint tub and scrub the box with dish soap and a scrubber/sponge. Some colors, like red, seem to have stained it some. After it's been washed I wipe off the outside of the paint tubs and put them back in
The Miya-himi gouache I have is so tough now! It doesn’t matter how much water I mix into them, a few pans are completely chunky and dry. Others are sooo watery and separated for no reason. I did go ahead and get 3 more royal talens tubes, this time with my own money. I’ve dried my favorite colors down in a half pan to be used in my travel palette. I know some people are really against doing that but I’ve found they reactivate great and pair super well with watercolors!
@@fallowfawnart I'm glad I'm not the only one having trouble with my Maya HIMI gouache. I'll have to try making a travel kit when I buy a new brand of gouache Thank you for the tip!
Hey! You can find my Etsy shop here: BrownDeerBrushworks.Etsy.com I believe I just ran out of business cards 😅, so if you make an order soon you probably won’t have one in there. And I’m currently working on restocking the watercolors but I plan to have them up at latest by March 15th
Awesome! I have a few gouache tutorials on my "Art Tutorials" playlist. I plan on making an 'intro to gouache' video at some point this year, and I also have a 'self taught artist guide' coming out soon with a tutorial playlist that includes videos from all sorts of creators on all sorts of things (including gouache). I'm excited to see what you make!
It's been a couple of months and I must say I love this sketchbook! I've only had an issue with the paper pilling one time and it was my own fault for scrubbing the paper too hard. I've also learned how to better work with the paper so that I don't pull up the previous layers of paint. What should I review next?
I accidently said that the storage for the old iPad was 16 megabytes and the new one 256 megabytes. THIS IS NOT THE CASE! The old iPad was 16 GB, the new one I'm reviewing is 256 GB, so much more storage
