Walk Throughs of my favorite places in Chicago and Birmingham. Also my memories of places and videos of my son and family. Thank you for spending time here!! Cheers!!
This is a long shot because this video is 4 years old but across 65 there in the background is the shopping center with Big Lots and Sabor Latino, but in the ~90s was a steakhouse that shared the parking lot. I think it became like a pool supply store, maybe a mattress store, but does anyone remember the name of the steakhouse?
You know, it could be. It doesn’t ring a bell to me but that place was about 1000 different places. So it’s possible it was Daryl’s at some point and maybe it even became a different steakhouse later. Thanks for the prompt reply. It’s been driving me crazy. I’m just going to say it was Daryl’s and move on.
@@JasonRandazza I'm going to ask some buddies that worked over there, I'll let you know what I find out. Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch.
Great video! I subscribed after a Vestavia video that you did a while back. Man, Old Town Helena is the in a lot of people's opinions one of the most picturesque little villages. I may be bias. I grew up in Helena. All these friends and loved ones in the city. It was a wonderful place to grow up, too. Not just beautiful, either -- Boy Scouts and community events. Just a great little town.
Me and my old lady just checked out from here this morning, we stayed in the back on the third floor, we had an awesome breakfast in the Victorian dining room
Thanks for including me in this list! BTW - I'm about to publish a video where I mention Kevin and Jenny from Eat Baila Travel - I went to Nebula coffee shop based on their recommendation.
In 1974 my first job was working at Zayre. My parents made me quit to make sure my grades stayed up once the school year started. I was so annoyed - partly because my grades were very good, and partly because I enjoyed working there so much.
I used to live in Terrace Court Apts.THE one in the top of the video, for 4 years.Loved it cause my school was RIGHT a ross the street, beside Louie,Louie.Southern Institute, a fashion college.Gulas was down stairs in my apt.building which was highly secured, seperate codes to the doors and elevator.
It was nice to see another Birmingham area video. When I was in Birmingham last Christmas, I ate at the Diplomat Deli. Your videos always make me a little homesick - in a good way.
I remember all of those fun places, the 80's were a great time for nightlife in Southside! I spent a lot of time at Dugans, Clyde Houstons and Louie louie...and The Nick!
Great++ video! I used to play in the creek with my school friends around 1970 before any of that was built. I attended the first year of the new high school, lunch was cold sandwiches from a catering truck since the school was still being built. Rebels! Retirement age now and been around the country, my best memories are right there.
That is awesome! Thank you for sharing that. Yes, I spent a ton of time playing in the creeks in Regent Forest back in the 70's. You may like a couple of my other videos I did. Ive done some of my memories and did one on Columbiana Rd and a bunch in Hoover. Thank you for the kind words!!
It is weird. Maybe to restrict the flow. The more you look into things the more you go down a rabbit hole. This world is very strange. Stranger than you would think. Maybe look into old world. Meltology. #Meltology. It all ties together.
This is a bad idea because you are blowing lbs of moisture from wet clothes back into your home. The wet steam that is usually exhausted outside is now blown into the conditioned space. I own a HVAC business and have tested this with meters. Relative humidity will be sky high. Just be aware.
I believe this is a "soil saver". Instead of a steep slope down to a culvert (the depth may be necessary to build head to increase culvert capacity) that may erode, the elevation change is accomplished with an abrupt drop. The drop also reduces some of the horizontal energy of the water. These seem to have been really popular with the Soil Conservation Service, so I'd wager that whatever was done here was partially subsidized by the federal government and it was built to their standards.
If I had to guess it was built in 1969 with the surrounding complex being apartments at that time and now condos. Thank you for that explanation. That makes sense.
Could be a attempt at making a trash rack to hold leaf and branches floating on top and allowing massive water flow under the wall to the 3 drain pipes. Also allowing flood over draining without completly blocking the 3 pipes. All while its at capacity
That movie theater was vacant for many years. Then it was a church called “The Solid Rock”, and then it was a bar called “Cheers” which was shut down for cocaine trafficking. Then it was the police station. I only know this because I worked across the street at Lorna Village. By the way, Famous Fred’s is what you meant was in the mall. It was still there till fairly recently and just that i mean in the past ten years. Famous “TEDS” was in Lorna Village (across the street from the rear of the mall) which became Pizza Hut when they started delivery in 1989. The Hut, owned by NPC, bought all the Ted’s locations. The only one that Pizza Hut bought that still existed closed in 2018? Maybe 2019. Cahaba Heights.
Congratulations on 500 subscribers. I have enjoyed your videos, especially those that share memories of Birmingham locations like Vestavia, Homewood, etc. It certainly brings back a lot of great memories for me as well. I live in Virginia now, but grew up in Shelby County and lived in Birmingham for many years. Wish you success with the birdhouse.
One Hell of an athlete. I remember when he was coming out of Bryson City there were almost folk legends of what he could do. Loved his ability and fight!!
They built the Chick-Fil-A. There was nothing there. They also built a Books-a-Million where Royal Furniture is after they closed the indoor mall. It was the first one I ever shopped at. For years after they built Burlington Coat Factory you could see remnants of the old mall in that store, the back entrances which were locked up and had shelves in front of the doors, the old mall restrooms, the floor still had remnants of old walls and stores. They eventually remodeled and all that is gone now. There was also some kind of seafood restaurant on the south corner, like Captain Hooks or something. Another interesting little mall was in Pelham, about 10 miles down the road, where Standard Furniture and Mi Pueblo are now. It was smaller than the Hoover Commons but had a little indoor mall area with a fountain.
I lived on Lanark Road in the 60's and 70's which is just downhill from The Crest and my best friend lived even closer on Aberdeen. I loved this area! The back alley ways were great to go rambling through! I can remember sitting on the edge of "The Cut" just gazing out over the town. Mayor Siebels lived on the Crest at that time, I believe.
