No, they can not be released. We are in the US so it is very difficult to transport these out of the country.

Don't cassowaries have a 5-month breeding season?
@cassowaryconservancy
@cassowaryconservancy 8 дней назад
It's about that long but they started laying late this year due to the lengthy winter we had.

@@cassowaryconservancy I think probably the reason why male Southern cassowaries have the job of incubating and raising is so the female's body can keep producing more eggs to be fertilized. Is it like that with all cassowary species the males have all of the parental duty?
@watchensee
@watchensee 18 дней назад
Can't the male incubate the egg/s himself?
@cassowaryconservancy
@cassowaryconservancy 8 дней назад
Eggs go in the incubator for improved chance of hatch. Plus there are a lot of raccoons, they see good at night, the birds not so much! So the raccoons are able to steal eggs & chicks to eat!

@@cassowaryconservancy In the wild cassowary chicks have only a 10% chance of survival, and that's the ones that get to hatch of course.

The reason males have less cold damage could be that testosterone raises their ambient body temperature, so it takes more cold to get them to tissue damage levels of cold…. Poor birdies, I’m glad they’re in the warm

Why not have 2 enclosures so you can shift them into a separate holding yard while you get the egg?
@cassowaryconservancy
@cassowaryconservancy Месяц назад
Easy to say, not so easy to do. It costs between $10,000 - $20,000 each enclosure, depending on cost of supplies and labor. We took in some additional cassowaries in need of sanctuary recently and are in need of funding for additional enclosures. If you'd like to make a donation, please visit our website: www.CassowaryConservancy.org Thanks!❤
