Hello, we're a couple in eastern Tennessee living on 2.5 very neglected acres and our elevation is roughly 2,600 feet. 2022 was spent focusing our time & money on a gut rehab of the existing 1100 sqft house. 2023 we expanded our garden adding a 50 foot long caterpillar high tunnel. Bees are in the near future along with lots of fencing! We'd really enjoy meeting other folks in the area that having similar interests of homesteading, gardening, house repairs, canning, cooking, etc. Thank you for stopping by our little channel.

Whats a realistic burn time for this stove? Will it hold fire overnight? Thanks
@tbb10785
@tbb10785 14 дней назад
Sorry for the delay hurricane Helene has knocked out power and internet at our house in east Tennessee. I'm in town catching up on work. The stove will have about a 3 hour burn time with the air intake at the smallest setting. It will continue to have coals and radiant heat for another 2 hours. We usually only put enough wood into the stove for a 1 hour burn. If we burn much longer the house gets over 80 degrees. Take care!

@@tbb10785 No need whatsoever to apologize,thanks for the reply. Sorry for what you are going through. Stove seems like a pretty good deal overall. I'm in New Hampshire. So, you do not fill the oil filter canister with oil before replacing? Also, I noticed today that the interior of the canister is spring loaded, so it's important to note that there is more resistance to screwing it on once it reaches that point of the threading.
@tbb10785
@tbb10785 Месяц назад
Hello! FYI, we sold the RAV4 recently because it started to burn/use oil at 200,000 miles. This is with 5,000 mile oil change intervals. I couldn't figure out a way to add oil to the canister during an oil change. Easy with a spin-oil filter which I do on the new vehicle. I agree about the spring in the canister, I always felt like I was over-tightening the canister, and would break the plastic. Take care!

Thank you so much for posting this "How Do" video! I am getting water in the floor of the rear passanger seat of my 2007 Solara. I replaced the top and drain system gutter about 3 years ago and it worked fine until the last month or so. I didn't realize that it was not draining properly until I noticed that the rear carpet mat was damp. At first I thought it was caused from someone spilling a water bottle, so I removed the mat and kept it out trying to airdry the floor area. Then when I was traveling somewhere the person in the pasanger seat noticed a water trickling sound (I don't know how else to describe what they heard). It was then I realized that the drains must be clogged. As I mentioned, I installed a new top and drain system a few years ago. I found a video on RU-vid for how to change the top and after watching 3 or 4 times and making notes I decided I could do this myself and ordered the top. After removing the top I discovered that the drain system gutter was very rotted, most likely due to age and my frequent use of the top. I will not say that replacing the top was simple, but I had a friend help and we methodically followed the steps I had written down from watching the video; it took a couple of 6 hour days. If you decide to do the convertable top replacement yourself plan ahead and BE SURE TO ORDER A DRAIN GUTTER SYSTEM AND DO THEM BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. It will save you the headache of getting everything apart and then discovering you need a drain system, which sometimes has a several week back order (which happened to me). Luckily I was able to call the manufacturer of the drain system myself in Rhode Island and the Operations Manager was kind enough to send me one out within a couple of days. Doing the top and drain replacement myself saved me over $2500.

Does this stove require or not require a pipe damper? Why or why not?
@tbb10785
@tbb10785 6 месяцев назад
Sorry for the delay, Thursdays start at 4:30am for us and end late. The Owners Manual doesn't address using or not using a damper, so that wasn't any help. I found this after a search "Newer models of wood stove don’t typically require a damper. A damper was traditionally used on older, less efficient, models of stove to help reduce the flow of air leaving the firebox. Certified modern stoves meet stringent regulations and typically won’t need a damper to perform well." at fireplaceuniverse.com/does-wood-stove-need-damper/ I personally have never used a pipe damper with the 3 modern stoves we have owned. I could see it being used if you had a chimney fire and wanted to block the air feeding the fire. Hope you have a great weekend!

My air feed for the stove is a 4 inch opening in the back which I connected to a 4 metal dryer duct tubing. Cut a hole in the hearth so it's pulling air from my crawl space. I think I'll extend it to the outside this summer which will only have one 90 degree elbow so it should flow easily. Yes, we had a house in the past where we had to crack a window on fire startup. I was thinking this house would be that tight so that's why I'm pulling air from outside the living quarters.

@@tbb10785 sounds like a good system. Hopefully changing the intake a bit will help. Sounds like a good video idea! Cheers, Mike.

I had left my solara at my mechanic to diagnose bank 1 only misfires, and there was some super heavy rain. I had to repair the jbl sub so I was beginning to remove the back seat and stepped on the rear carpets and it was soaked with water. I’m glad I saw this video as I decided to check the drains and sure enough there was insane amounts of fallout, especially pine needles blocking almost all of the drains. 1 drain on the passenger side was actually plugged with some weird white foamy stuff with the oem black paint on it. I picked it out and I actually took a screw driver and pryed so that the metal drains are more rounded than square. I painted them over after as the paint cracked but it’s under the rocker so no one’s gonna see the blue paint anyways. When I bought the car, the trunk was full of water in the spare tire area so I vacuumed it all out and haven’t had an issue since. My top was replaced quite recently before I bought the car so I gather the water was not removed after installation. I removed everything and sanded and sprayed a thick coat of primer over everything so I should be good to go

Sounds like you have it ready for the next heavy rain and you shouldn't leak! Glad the video helped. We might have kept our Solar longer it had a new top like yours. You should be good for many years with an occasional clean of the drains 😁

Bless you for taking time to let me know it helped. My install was easy on a few of the vents and the rest were a little difficult. Take your time and try not to do them in in one day 😁

Thank you Mike! We never thought about the high tunnel being such a nice warm place to relax on a sunny day. We have crazy ideas of attaching something more permanent to the south side of the house, lol!
