As always, on point and pulling no punches (but in a fair way, IMHO). As the Game of Throws lead, I'm taking all this to heart for my festival and my show (year 6). Thanks as always for interesting and educational content.

I saw the first 2 of the Galas, the 2nd fixed the MC sound. Heard the third went the best. It was also hot in the tent for the first 2. As is mostly the case every time you hold an EJC in a new location, each will have lots of issues as organizers are new to all such things. Now I will watch your video, as you always have great gems 💎 Main issue I had was there was no flow between each act.

Regarding the lighting technicians, I've had the opportunity to speak with them at several EJCs (I organize the EJC Diabolo Battle). The general feeling is often the same-they are not particularly familiar with juggling or circus performances. They're overwhelmed by the technical demands of the artists and rarely have the time to consider aspects like audience comfort, such as preventing blinding lights. ALSO many artists focus so intensely on their performances that they don't give much thought to lighting, leaving the technicians to improvise a lighting setup during the short rehearsal time. These technicians often have to configure everything within a day or two, under significant pressure. These technicians are hired for just a few days and are having numerous responsibilities. If no one specifically directs them to prioritize audience comfort, they won’t, because their focus is the artist requirements while ensuring the performers aren’t blinded by the lights. Ideally, the main gala organizer should communicate these technical details to the lighting team (or show them directly Luke's videos! XD), but that person is usually overwhelmed with a multitude of other tasks. After all.... It’s easy to wish the lights would simply take care of themselves when that’s why you hired technicians. Speaking from experience, after organizing few EJC Diabolo Battles, I'm gradually learning about these things... This year's lighting for Diabolo Battle wasn’t perfect either, it was right after the gala Luke talked about in this video and I saw how exhausted the technicians were. They had been setting up for over 12 hours straight, without breaks, in a tent, in Portugal in summer... that HEAT!!! When it came time for the Diabolo Battle, I told them to simply light up the stage and leave because they were basically zombies begging for food and fresh air... that's said its something that I also need to improve for future Diabolo Battles... Thanks for the tips Luke and good job!

I think there was a big difference between the gala show on the Friday and the last show on Saturday and things seemed to go a lot more smoothly on other days and the host seemed to have done things better that day
@lukeburrage
@lukeburrage 3 дня назад
Those who watched from the front of the stage in the last show had a great show experience. So a third of a third of people who paid €15 euro for an EJC Gala Show ticket were very happy. And I'm happy for those 12% of jugglers, but for the 85% who had a sub-optimal experience (at best) I made this video.

@@lukeburrage oh I understand there were still lots of problems with the show but just pointing out the experience may have been slightly different in other shows

Luke may have some valid points, for example the bad host and the delayed start of the show, but some points I think are not to criticize (as much). You need take in account, that you need to ask performers to be part of the gala and some of them might not have the time/capacity to even attend an EJC ( e.g. Delaney Bales would need to come from the US) and some performers/groups like Jonglissimo are always at the EJC and have their acts, which are toptier Juggling, which catches the entire crowd. Therefore I think Jonglissimos very different types of acts can be shown more than once at an EJC. I personally wasn't that disturbed by the lights, but for filming I get the point.
@lukeburrage
@lukeburrage 3 дня назад
Your standards are too low! The EJC is the biggest convention in the world, and the gala show is the biggest show of the EJC. It should be the BEST and MOST PROFESSIONAL juggling show in the whole world for the whole year! That's my standard! I don't care if the artist is "already at the convention" and they are easy to get when my point is I want FEWER acts in the gala, not MORE. Four of these acts were repeats from previous shows in this same EJC, and the gala show was FOUR ACTS TOO LONG. Every person watching the EJC Gala paid €15 for a ticket, which is a budget of maybe €40,000 or €50,000. How can you fail to attract 10 world class acts to the EJC for that money? Delaney's flight costs? You mean exactly the same cost as every other artist coming from across the Atlantic? Put it in the budget for the best juggling show of the year!
@paulhalgarth1164
@paulhalgarth1164 3 дня назад
Why do these juggling conventions repeatedly design the stage lighting so wrong?! Having footlights is clearly incorrect and this seems a very basic concept to me.

The best strategy to use depends a lot on your reach. The longer your reach, the more you have the option of using a "stand off" strategy.

Jesus Takahashi Christ (and everyone else, of course). His consistency is mindblowing. Like the tricks you see could easily be something he spent an hour trying get on camera once, and we'd still be impressed, but he's performing them on stage. Also hilarious that he hardly juggles in his daily life.

lovely how some things never change, henry's is the best diabolo string. Although it''s mind blowing no one has made the same thing in the last 20 years. Recently i have been playing with the white Sundia string i would say it's in between henry's yellow and MB's yellow, but because the axles of the sundia diabolo's are galvanized it doesn't accumulate as many oxidants. It does still bunch up if you don't unwrap in-time but i've learnt ways to play around it. Pro-tip for Luke try to make transistions as smooth as possible while wrapped. if you jerk it left to right and back there is so much time where there is no tension on the string giving it opportunity to bunch up. and depending on what wrap you have going on the way it's tilted also greatly contributes to bunching up and wrapping itself. So keep it straight, you can feel it when the string starts rubbing more on itself, tilt the other way from that feeling. oh and bearing diabolo's fix the problem as well offcourse, i don't like those. great video once again!
