This channel was originally created to show beginners how I grow and care for my Masdevallia & Dracula orchids in my own greenhouse environment here in the UK and encourage more people to grow this beautiful orchid Genus with a little help and support, this is one sure way of reducing stress and anxiety levels, leading to a positive state of mind.
The channel continues to grow slowly so did my greenhouses, I now have a collection of Carnivorous plants which includes venus flytraps and highland nepenthes to name a few, which I hope to share with likeminded growers. So remember I'm here to help so Let's grow together.
And finally! We have an interactive website to support this channel, so please go check it out, you won't be disappointed.
New viewer here, from canada (quebec). I just found out that my stepdad’s backyard is COVERED with sphagnum moss 😅 i got a bunch of it, will try a few different methods, see what works best with the weather conditions we have here. So far, i think UK weather is the closest to what we have here so i will definitely follow your recommandations and ket you know how it went 😊 I wonder how should i dry it to use it as a substrate for my cactus/succulents.. should i just leave it on a flat surface, upside down, in the dark? Cant find any videos on how to turn live sphagnum into dry syuff to mix with my potting mix
How often do you water your nepenthes that are in pure sphagnum? I find it really hard to tell when I should water mine since they hold moisture way better than normal soil. I don’t want to overwater them as that is bad for the plant. I have dead sphagnum moss on the bottom and live sphagnum moss as a top dressing.
@@AndreasRP. it is difficult to know when to water I usually have a routine of 3 times a week and use my finger to see how damp the moss is, also if the top dressing of moss looks dry you can guarantee the nepenthe roots are dry as well, winter is a different story.
Absolutely stunning. I would like to buy one, do you have a website to check Masdevallias availability and prices? I couldn't find any website on google
I have a very young one too and it looks extremely like yours - lower pitcher is green and upper is red, with a very clear borderline in the middle. So adorable
Hi mick, I've a similar system in my greenhouse. It's set up a bit differently. I use smart plugs and sensors to set a pump to work when the temperature is too high, and also, when the humidity is too low and when a target is hit temperature or humidity the smart plug turns the pump off after the sensor detected the drop or rise, my greenhouse has its own wifi and i can control and check everything over the Internet i aso have a camera in there to see things are working. I use tapo as my greenhouse smart devices.
@@ColinSalvage I’ve always believed in making life easier and I’ve had cameras for a couple of years I stopped using the mist system when I had my broadband failed when it came back on the memory failed and basically the misters came back on for several hours and I couldn’t take that chance again.
@MicksMasdevalliaorchids by default anytime that is setup using the Internet goes to default mode and always remembers their setup instructions so it should be failsafe.
@@sweeneyTodd-de4by I’m still waiting for my annual inspection from Defra to allow me to issue plant passports once I receive it I’ll be uploading plants on my website.
@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids just a update, I left them alone didn't fertilize or anything for once and I have all 5 alive and 4 of them have about 3 leafs with dew. Thanks man, furthest I got with these seeds. Osmocote was killing them I guess. When do you usually transplant? And when you do, you still let them sit in a inch of water?
Cost doesn't matter, its what your happy with. I think your greenhouse looks very nice and your plants should do really well. Good job sir. We are getting a greenhouse also for my carnivurous plants and bonsai trees and will no doubt need to reinforce as the gusts in winter are pretty bad as you probably know. Great video. Keep up the good work and enjoy my friend.
Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos and commenting much appreciated and good luck with your new greenhouse you’ll be amazed how soon it gets established and flourishes.
Probably buddy it was early days on RU-vid but it helped me start a small online business and Spanish moss is one of my biggest sellers thanks for watching and commenting.
Ynse I allow mine to get shaded indirect sunlight and good air movement during the day and currently water twice a week and just leave them to do there own thing.
I like to fill the pot completely make a hole in the middle with a screwdriver and put the plant in. I Guide the roots in with the screwdriver to make sure they get in correctly and then I push the media towards the plant on the top. Then I knock the pot on the table to make the media settle. t hen I water the top and put them in my water tray so the media can soak up the water
New subscriber. Just saw you dividing your Sarracenia, my largest if a very full pot do you have to repot or could you just keep getting a bigger pot, I don’t want to kill mine …it’s pot is 7” across ,had 20 flowers now cut off cos the died ,but the tubes look so packed…. I would appreciate your advise …in the U.K. midlands and we are now in June
It’s quite easy to divide next time you repot you’ll notice it pulls away into separate tubers just pot them on to create more plants or even swap with other growers and thanks for subscribing.
Confused…..mine is labelled perpurea. And it’s not the same. It’s a tall tube 1 about 18” tall it’s about 7 years old, lots in very large pot and need separating , Now not sure what it is, it’s green with red veins on top, has red flowers , any ideas
Hi Mick love your channel, I would really like to start and keep Nepenthes, can you recommend me which is an easy one to start with please? They need much light water, what peat sand you pot them in please, much appreciated
Ynse I’ve spent a considerable time volunteering here with the National Coastwatch institute on the east coast I’ve only a couple of weeks left then I’ll be back full time in the greenhouse, thanks for asking buddy.
I’m assuming putting water in the outer tray is for humidity? But if the trays are completely sealed, how will the humidity get in? Or do you mean add the water after you open the valve?
I add the water for both humidity and moisture content I’ve realised that the base layer must remain wet giving of a bog simulation for healthy growth.
Hi there Mick😌🙌I enjoy watching your Masdevallias. The shade cloth is a must. I've been working on a shaded area this year with shade cloth because it gets too hot here. My shaded area is cheap and does the job, not pretty at all, but practical👍
Beautiful Masdevallias😌🙏💖The ideal conditions for sure. Dendrobium nobile, like you have on the mount need to be kept damp all summer, they are well suited for mounts, I see no reason that you need to take it off😌🙏It just needs more moisture, that's why here in Japan they are planted in sphagnum, but they aren't fed too often in sphagnum, about once a month with a very diluted liquid feed. They should do well😌🙏💖I enjoyed watching very much😌🤲🌟
Thanks for spending your time watching and commenting on my video it really is appreciated. Yes I’ll keep the dendrobium more damp during the summer months and probably add more sphagnum moss around the roots.
Hi, great collection you have there. My husband and I grow orchids in an apartment in the USA, Bronx NY. We have purchased some Masdevallia orchids with no success in keeping them alive. We just subscribed to your channel. I am hopeful; to one day growing these successfully. Be safe.
You’ll be amazed how easy these are to grow once you’ve established a growing environment good with your massie’s and thanks for watching and commenting.
Good to see a new video from you Mick. I always enjoy your informative videos. You don't give yourself enough credit Mick, you say you are not an expert, but I disagree. Even experts can continue to learn new things, but a good expert shares his real knowledge like you do in each of your videos. As always, thank you for sharing your hobby and your knowledge and greenhouses with all of us.
Thanks for your kind words of encouragement , I really do want growers to enjoy the hobby and have success growing these beauties and at the end of the day if I can help anyone the channel is worth doing.
Great guide. I obviously searched your channel to find good information when I needed to repot my massies. All of them came crouded in small pots with sphagnum only. I grow them in a terrarium sitting in a few mm water. They seems to like it, but a more open and free draining substrate is proboably better.🙂👍😮
I found sphagnum moss was not really working for me, it was staying far too wet especially with the colder nights approaching so I removed it all ever since they have been far better, I have even repotted my Dracula orchids in bark now days, will have to see in 12 months time.
Once the bug bites it’s a great feeling, I just love potting around in the greenhouse’s for me it’s away of forgetting what’s happening around us all in this current climate.
Hello Sir, I saw your RU-vid channel and understand you are a RU-vidr. Very nice video on your channel, I really enjoyed it. Total 2.89k+ subscribers and a Total of 161+ Uploaded videos of your channel. I noticed one thing according to your channel your channel videos are not viewed and subscribed. You need to optimize your channel and do video SEO to reach your target audience. Otherwise, if you upload videos to your channel throughout the year, none of your videos will get viral views. If your channel is optimized a little and if the videos are SEO then your channel will rank very fast and your channel will grow. And monetization of your channel will be on. I would like to help you in this matter. Looking forward to your reply, thanks

New subscriber! I found your channel through Ed’s Orchids. I’m hoping for some expert guidance and restoration of a troubled, newly acquired Masdevallia, although I think I have it going in the right direction now.
I’m sure you’ll have every success growing massie’s they are truly beautiful orchids and you’ll definitely find something useful on my channel, thanks for subscribing.
If it has roots will usually burst into growth during the spring, I've often cut a sarracenia right back to the peat moss so clearly no leaves and once spring comes around it starts to develop new leaves.
I’m sure you’ll have amazing success unfortunately for me having them in small trays stood in a small amount of water of which on occasion I forgot to fill.
Thanks for the video. I rescued one in November from Morrisons and popped into a cold frame. I think it needs a desperate repot and sadly some of the traps have developed what looks like powdery mildew or some sort of fungal growth on the tops of the leaves. Time to go and investigate, clean it up and give it a fresh medium of moss peat and perlite!
@@MicksMasdevalliaorchids thanks Mick. I got as far as finding and cleaning/scrubbing out square pots amongst our huge hoard of round pots! I had an hour left of daylight, so will give my 4 Sarracenia's a repot tomorrow as all have roots bursting out of the pot holes. I'll start with the healthiest first in case I spread any mould spores. Happy growing to you 😊
