The worst part is when the fob battery goes flat you can not just put another battery in..... you have to take the bike to a dealer to reset it fuck'n stupid idea
I don't think thats right. I changed the battery in my fob recently. I had been getting a low fob battery warning on the tft. Just swapped out the CR2032 battery and it worked fine 🙂
Ahh, good question. It was an experiment to make sure the Zumo XT didn't change the route generated by Calimoto. I'd created the route with Calimoto, then exported it to the Zumo XT. I'd rather use the Zumo XT for a display. Unfortunately the turn by turn instructions on the TFT only work if you're using the KTM navigation app.
@@motocrad thanks for the reply and that makes sense. After watching the previous video, it looked like you were using the KTM app and I couldn't work out what was going on. Thanks again.
You're very welcome, thanks for your comment. It's an amazing bike & you'll not be disappointed, best smiles per miles & practical. Be aware though, the 1390 SAS could be announced in the next couple of months.
@@motocrad Thanks for the head's up on the new bike. I've had a 990 Adv and 640 Adv (which I rode to Morocco), and I'm just getting the KTM itch again.
Thank you for the tutorial. FYI the link to the indicators is not correct. I ordered from the link and they are different. Slightly but they don't fit properly. The rubber collar is not tight enough and the piece moves all over the place even with the screw tight.
Thanks for letting me know. The original listing I got mine from doesn't exist anymore, I thought the link provided was the same, sorry for the confusion.
At least we're giving it a go, I'd rather do it like a noob than not do it all 😄 Riding off road after so much road riding does take some getting used to. All the best.
Thanks for great videos, i was thinking about changing the fairings only and i dont know what happened, i just found myself with fully stripped down zx9r(e1) 😄😄 will do full renovation hopefully finishes one day🤞🏾 im exited to see more videos from you good luck
Hi and thanks for your comment. I feel a bit out of my depth now which is why I think the project has stalled a little. I've watched a few more videos and read various forums and feel ready to pick it up again. Good luck with putting your ZX-9R back together 😄
Hi, I've used the Quadlock universal adapter. It's stuck on the back of the dji controller with 3m adhesive. The controller is then attached to the Quadlock handlebar mount like a phone would attach.
Totally respectable ride! I struggled up exactly the same type of conditions recently, and you're carrying at least another 30kg in weight. In terms of keeping momentum, consider the traction control. The KTM offroad mode is very good, but I find its a bit sneaky in scrubbing speed when its very loose uphill so it can be hard to push the bike beyond slow speed mode in some conditions. Traction control can only manage the traction you have. Another tip is invest your traction, when do have grip, push a little harder so you can ease off where theres none. Don't be too scared when you're going in a straight line, and take necessary changes in direction nice and smooth. I'm actually switching the STR out soon, but I agree they are a good all around tire. Bit of limitation in that type of uphill, and in the mud, in my experience, but can definitely be overcome with good technique.
Thank you, really appreciate all the tips & advice, I want to go back now and have another go 😉 Thankfully I haven't been through much mud, but as you've mentioned I think the STR's are better suited to dry conditions. All the best :)
@@motocrad having another go is a really good idea. Tip I was given recently around riding the same track multiple times to become more comfortable riding overall makes a lot of sense. I'd still say they're pretty good in wet conditions, just where the mud is the kind that sticks to your tire.
Couple of pointers - the STR's are def not up to the task - the standard Rally is better as deeper tread but would not be my choice. Momentum and your position on the bike will also make a huge difference - look through any obstacle and you need to be carrying far more speed up hills with your eyes a good 30 metres ahead all the time. By paddling you are unweighting the pegs - this then in turn takes the weight off the rear tyre and lessens grip. Be worth a day or weekend at sweet lamb adventure bike school with the guys there and they'll teach you the skills to get out on the trails safer and easier with a few bike changes. Great road that.
Thanks Rob, what an amazing comment. I thought when publishing this video I was opening myself up for some stick, but this comment is brilliant, great advice and I really appreciate the pointers. I'll take a look at Sweet Lamb Adventure. Thank you once again and all the best :)
Great vid but more speed like you say but it all takes time and practice and you’ll get there that Ktm isn’t really the right bike for the job I’ve had 3 adventure 2 1290’s and 1190 they are way to heavy for that type of riding for me especially on where you have loose rocks stones it struggles for grip I always said a enduro be better as you know anyway but as you said you’ve got 2 bikes in one and that’s where the 1290 comes into its own on the road I loved them still miss mine so much I’ve changed direction now and bought a new triumph rocket 3gt and loving it but always thinking about another 1290 it’s in my blood you done we’ll mate congrats to you shame about the drone take care ride safe
Thank for the comment Nicholas, I totally agree, the 1290 is not the best bike for the first section of that road, far too heavy. An amazing road though once you get past that section though. So you've got a Rocket 3GT, beautiful bike, I'd love to add one of them to the stable ;)
@@motocrad you should it is a beautiful bike in my opinion 23 plate I’ve got 45 miles to do till it’s done 1000 miles so another 200 miles and I’ll call it run in the torque is amazing and I haven’t opened it up fully yet so comfy and smooth also get on you certainly won’t regret it take care
Let me know if you’re not past the point of no return or if you have any questions. I’ve had my 2001 for years and completed much of this work. FYI with th3 valve maintenance complete I got 210/210/220/220 on my compression test. These engines have lined cylinders, they cannot to my knowledge be honed.
That sounds like you're getting great compression. I didn't know that about the cylinders, I haven't done it yet, life has got in the way a little and the project is currently on hold. I'll do some homework before starting the rebuild :)
Personally I think you're making ALOT of unnecessary work. You should have put oil in each cyl first overnight. That will give you a accurate reading. also, please throw your Ali-Express screw in comp tester away, the hose swells and stuffs the reading, as well as not sealing.
Thanks for the advice, I do have a habit of buying Aliexpress crap. Making unnecessary work is what it's all about, I wanted a bike I could strip down to the last bolt and then rebuild. Having said that I've been distracted for a few months and the chances of it all going back together are getting slimmer each day 😉
The small fob is like a backup. If you ever lost the main key, you could hold the small fob against the bike by the forks and still start it. I recently did a road trip to Spain. I kept the small fob in a zipped inside jacket pocket, just in case I ever lost the main fob.
I'm doing this exact same thing to my 2001 zx6r, currently the bike is fully spripped, engine is fully stripped (I'm a qualified engine machinist of 20 years) and have started stripping the paint in the frame for some repairs then new paint, complete engine build, new fairing kit and some aftermarket parts.
Hi, that's reassuring to hear. I've done around 17000 km and also had no issues other than a bit of clutch slip. New clutch springs and fresh oil, problem sorted. All the best 😀
Thanks for the walkthrough! - All the information needed in an instant, which is a lot more than can be had from the user manual that is currently listed a "not currently available" when logging into the "personal garage" on KTM's website 😄
You're very welcome, and thanks for your comment. It's the same with the service book, I'd prefer to have a book rather than it all being online. Perhaps I'm just getting old 😉
Regarding the occasional electronics warnings, I read somewhere else that if you leave the bike for 20-30 seconds before starting it, the warnings don’t happen. Something to do with letting the startup procedure finish properly. Since I’ve followed that, I’ve not had an issue. On the filler cap thing, I’ve never had that problem 💁♂️
I found that letting the dash finish its startup bit and then starting the bike in neutral helps. I've since bought a LiFePo battery, and I've had no warnings since.
It does show speed limits when you pay subscription. I find that the link with the bike is easy and reliable and the guidance clear. It’s not always good at finding places when you search for them. Altogether it’s not too bad but I would much prefer to be able to display directions from a 3rd party app like Google Maps or Calimoto and think KTM should offer this rather than providing a KTM branded app.
Hi, My 1290 Sas has now 17‘000km and it’s a lot of fun. The negative details you mentioned I have seen these, too, but after getting used to it, who really cares? The important things are the outstanding engine, the excellent suspension, the very comfortable ACC, etc. I only once had an issue and it was my fault: very first ride out in spring, the battery was super weak, and unfortunately I switched the engine off shortly after leaving home. But I had a charger in the top case, and after 40‘ charging at a local shop, it started again, and later that day I fully charged the battery for a few hours No issues at all sice then! Very reliable bike in my view. I can’t speak for others, but some of my BMW friends (we are crossing the Alps, doing long tours together) seem to have more technical issues than I. All the best 😀
Hi, certainly is a lot of fun, i recently fitted some 70/30 tyres and now I can take the fun off-road. 2 years old so less precious about dropping now 😉 Seems to be luck of the draw, similar to cars. I've had Land Rovers in the past and never had any trouble, yet they have a terrible reputation. I'm hoping to do the Alps by the end of the year. All the best.
The direction of increase/decrease got me too... Software Engineer also... ACC warning in Rally is also annoying, they should give an option to disable it. Keyless - I do love actually, no messing about with a key. I do roll with a tank bag, so didn't notice fuel cap thing. Maybe shutting off the bike would solve it ? Need to test it.
Hi fellow Software Engineer, I was beginning to think I was the only one who found the increase/decrease the wrong way round. The fuel cap thing isn't all that bad, I was struggling to come up with negatives for the review, the bike more than makes up for it in every other way 😉
The preload warning has to do with the underpowered battery. I had my first incident during a cold morning in year one already. After 3 years all kinds of other errors popped up during even hot start. It ist worse with the clutch pulled, strangely enough. With the new LiFePo Battery the spook is gone for now and the starter is revving the motor quicker. KTM really should have chosen a bigger battery. My favorite seat became the long two-in-one power parts model. Tried the heated seats in high and normal height. Wasn't happy with those. The heating foil takes away comfort too much.
Hi, thanks for sharing. I've just ordered a LiFePo battery, so it's good to know that it will solve the preload warning. I've ended up making a custom seat to solve my issue, but I've heard from a few other 1290 SAS owners all saying the one-piece powerparts seat is the best 👍
Here in Portugal we need to go pay for the fuel before using the pump. So I stop the bike, shut it down, go pay (often that means waiting in line) then go back to the bike to put petrol on it. How would that work? Would I need to turn it on and off again to open the fuel tank? Thanks
Good question, the fuel cap locks around a minute after turning the bike off. So yes, you would need to turn the bike on again to open the cap. You could always open the fuel cap, but leave it resting in the closed position whilst you go in to pay.
@@motocrad nice. Thanks. That sounds like a good idea. I'm making a deal for a 1290 super Duke. The dealership is making great conditions because the 1390 model is coming next year. I'm evaluating every detail 🤣
Just curious... What was the warning you got on the dashboard starting at 19:42? I just did a road test on a 2024 SAS and loved it, but it did throw a similar warning about the key being out of range, when it was sitting right in the cubby on the front of the tank. I'm not worried about the mechanicals of this bike but KTM electronics get me a little nervous.
Hi, the warning was the Ice Warning that comes on when the ambient temp drops to 4°c or below. The only time I've seen the Key Out Of Range warning when riding was when I had the ARA (Anti Relay Attack) feature turned on. Turn ARA off and no more warnings. I think when you have ARA on, the key goes to sleep to prevent the attack motion should prevent it from sleeping, but not always. I've done a video on the Keyless Ignition and talked about the ARA some more 😀 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d3lrEUr8NIY.htmlsi=jZw7T1z31dKPnz6V
2 sets of Red lights! Veering over lanes! Cutting up oncoming traffic! And generally driving like a PRICK! Personally, I would have phoned the police there and then. Laugh and wind the driver up, whilst telling them I'm giving the footage to the police! But that's me! I have no patience for people who disrespect road safty!
Hi, I've had a Samsung S21 & S23 paired with the bike so I it should work. The first thing to check is that in the bluetooth settings on the phone, check that the option for Calls is enabled for the KTM connection. Only other thing I can think of is to reset things, on the phone go to the bluetooth settings and unpair the bike if it shows up in the list. I think there might be a similar option in the bluetooth settings in the bike. Then repair things back up.
You can reuse the pistons if they're in good nick. Of course, you have to get new piston rings. If you want to upgrade the bike you can bore the block out. I've assembled two oversize 9R motors. The first one I did was with a 923cc Wiseco kit, which gives about 151hp at the back wheel. This is imho the perfect amount of power for this bike. The second engine I did, my current bike, is a 2003 model bored out to 998cc, with CP Carrillo pistons. It's been a ported, installed a gearbox from a Z1000 and had some cam work done to it as well. The engine delivers 160bhp to the wheel with stock carbs, and 170 with 39mm flat slide carbs. I've also swapped out the suspension for that from a 2004/5 ZX-10r. But honestly, this setup is way too brutal for road use. Your gearbox looks perfectly fine. It was the 98/99 models that had weak gearboxes, and you'll spot the wear immediately. Not sure what model year your bike is (as I haven't watched the entire series yet), but it doesn't look like an early model.
Hi, thanks for the comment, loads of great info there and you sound like someone to reach out to if I need any advice :o) Mine is the 2001 E1 model, I've got new big & little end shells & piston rings to fit and I plan to keep it fairly stock. All the best.
@@motocrad No worries, they’re awesome stock as well! How are you going to hone the cylinder walls? That’s the only thing I dont do myself, worth outsourcing👍
@@motocradthere is an empty box in the shopping cart and over it is ask you: ” **IMPORTANT** Rider details - Please include: Rider weight (with gear), age and Riding style (Off-Road/Street).”
@@motocrad i am having same exact thing with the 300L... what do you think it is about this stock seat that makes the tailbone get compressed like that? you think it is that the foam is too mushy?
@misterchuck6866 Not sure what causes it, like you say, too mushy and narrow maybe. For me I think the problem started after spending a couple of hours on the motorway.
Hi, thank you. In the bluetooth settings on the bike, you can pair a phone and a headset. On the Cardo you can pair it to a phone and a gps/bike. When you put the Cardo into pairing mode, roll the volume roller just one notch, which should allow you to pair the headset to a second device, in this case, the bike.
