Seth cracks me up. He lays out zingers and digs at the perfect time and the guest reactions always crack me up, Jessie in particular because she seems to be a snarky gal who can dish the digs back.
I mean it’s already been said; her voice! But can we just take a minute to appreciate the comedy of this song and Jessie’s delivery. This song ranks up there with her ‘Adelaide’s Lament’.
Jessie Muller is the today Barbara Cook .As the great singer she also played both Carrie and Julie and hae the versatility to play both the romantic and the soubrete with the same talent.
Jessie Muller is a soprano who can belt as were Barbara Cook and Julie Andrews and is Kelli O Hara.She should do The Music Man with Hugh Jackman instead of Sutton Foster. Jessie did it in the Encores with Norm Lewis i 2019.
Good lord she is an incredible talent. She can sing ANYTHING. Her voice just MOULDS. Also this is is probably my favourite rendition of the song now. Petition for Jessie to have it professionally recorded. Heck, I know we just had a revival of She Loves Me, but I wouldn't mind another one starring Jessie Mueller
The first time I recall hearing this song was January 1972. I can pinpoint the date because it was part of a tribute to the Gershwin Brothers that was hosted by Jack Lemmon. I was15 years old. My dad was a long standing Gershwin fan and owned 78 RPM records of An American In Paris and Rhapsody in Blue. This song in particular stood out for me. I became a lifelong fan right then and there. Hearing Jessie sing it is so special to me. Every September I post videos of songs that remind me of my late once and forever bride, Vera. This one will be on it this year for certain. Breathtaking.

"Soft, kind, gentle and romantic" certainly doesn't describe the brittle, witty, clipped, cosmopolitan style of Gertrude Lawrence, who introduced this song in the original productions in NYC (1926) and London (1927)... which makes me wonder what the Gershwins' original conception of this song was.

Completely agree! He's great in person too - I ran into him in a coffee shop the day before and was star struck! But I managed to tell him I was a big fan and he was very grateful. By the time I met him again at the concert, I even felt at ease with him. I LOVE SETH!
