The question should really be: How can you survive financially in any country you want, while focusing on your purpose. And in that order: 1. Pay bills (with the least amount of time spent) 2. Work on purpose. If you want to be in a country asap, then an obvious answer is English teaching, which while it has its disadvantages as mentioned, it also fulfills that initial requirement: Pay bills without taking up all your time. If your purpose is glued to the front of your brain at all times, toxic colleagues shouldn't really have any effect on you aside from being a minor annoyance. As was said in the video though, keeping your eye on the prize/purpose is paramount. I did this when I moved to Taiwan. I focused on what I wanted to do, which was learn Chinese, and the teaching kept the bills paid. Later, my goal was to get out of teaching and build a business online because I wanted freedom. I grinded on that for a few years and teaching kept the bills paid. I'll move to Japan in December for 3 months with Japanese study also being the main purpose. I don't speak it yet, I don't have any friends, and I know it might be a bit lonely, although every man needs to learn the lesson of enjoying his own company. Ultimately though, being pessimistic or optimistic about the experience is a choice. I've chosen to believe it'll be awesome. I know meeting people is a bar/language group/bumble date/church/class away. As Seneca said, "We suffer more often in imagination than in reality." As a side note, always have 3 months' worth of living expenses in your back pocket. It will alleviate any additional stress you're going to feel from being in a new place. And of course, if you hate your life when you arrive, you can easily pack up and leave.

It really boils down to what a person wants. There are a ton of folks who move and live in the USA and love it while others hate it. If you can be happy, do it.

Go for it mate, Im from nz and did a 1 year working holiday in Japan the past year. Best year of my life so far by a long shot. I was about your age too when I left, honestly you have so much fun you feel bad that you don’t really miss your family much haha. Met tons of aussies too, you can get the same visa and yours is up to 18 months which is the longest of all WHV. Best way to get a ‘trial period’ of living in Japan then after that you can think about if you want to move there for good or not. All the best 💪

That was bloody perfect mate🇦🇺 You gave it straight and as it is. That’s what I like about your videos. I don’t have enough money for college overseas yet. However, in one year, my college will sponsor me to do 6 months in Japan. I’m learning Japanese now and will probably just stick to holidays every now and then. Thank you for the video. P.S my girlfriends boyfriend banned me from playing halo on his Xbox as I overwrited his save file 😢

Here's my take from serving in the US Navy: 1. Dont use dating apps at all. 2. Learn any amount of Japanese you can. The more the better. 3. Bar hop everywhere, but befriend the guys > girls. Cut out the creeps, just chill with the chill dudes. I guarantee you, they will invite you to an event with girls involved. Although, how much time it will take cant be determined. 4. Tokyo is a whole different ball game. Go anywhere else, but if the guys you befriended want to hit up Tokyo, then go for it. Personally, I love Osaka, Yokohama, and surprisingly Fukuoka. 5. Pretty niche skill, but I grew up in hispanic culture, so I found where the hispanic music is played and turned into a celebirty in 5 seconds flat. Go find that skill (that isnt gaming or anime) and do some research. 6. For those whom plan to visit for vacation in Japan, seek Language Exchange communities. Its a hit or miss, but I've seen even some Navy folk get married through there. Most of Japan is hidden in obscurity. The ones who go out at night are only the 10% of the population that are social. 7. Respect the culture, but dont glaze it. Some youthful japanese folks are so tired of all the rules and regulations that they simply want to break free. I missed a few opportunities because I was too respectful 😢. Godspeed.

I don't have a degree, but i was able to work at one of the top banks in canada. Hopefully i can fully move there.

The english teacher meme has caused so many people to get a shitty situation because they didn't actually enjoy teaching. The number one piece of advice is to actually visit japan for an extended duration so you get a feel for what the country is like first. Also you need to have at least some conversational knowledge of japanese before you even try anything, otherwise you're just gonna isolate yourself and struggle.

Hey Y James another great video brother 🫡 ✌️ Btw man - do you think that as a psychologist I could make a living in Japan ?? 🤔 I have a master's degree in Clinical Psychology, I was thinking if I could somehow work in Japan after learning the language. How is the mental health system over there ?
@koshka02
@koshka02 13 часов назад
As someone that has been to Japan before, its not worth moving to Japan unless: 1. You can speak/understand Japanese. 2. You have economic value beyond just knowing Japanese/English. Because very likely, what will happen is if you go to Japan (with intentions of living there), the only job you'll be able to get is teaching English- which does not pay well. Its better to get your degree first or get your business going in the US/Canada/Aus (wherever you're from), then if you want to come to Japan and live in Japan, and do something you are passionate about then that's the better way to go. However, its a bit of a catch-22 in a way, because its tough to learn Japanese outside Japan (as immersion learning is the best imo). So if you have money, it's not a bad idea to visit Japan a few times (as a guest/tourist) and try to put yourself in an environment to learn more Japanese with locals. Like, obviously people learn Japanese fluently outside of Japan, I'm just saying its much easier when you're in a forced immersion environment. I was visiting both Kyushu and Honshu in 2011/2012, and there were not a lot of people I encountered that spoke English. A few kids would walk up to me to want a picture or try to speak English to me (which I imagine is not uncommon being a 6 foot tall white man). People in Japan are very very friendly. But if you know Japanese already, its going to take you very far as opposed to if you don't know. The reason being, if you're not asian-passing, you're going to stick out like a sore-thumb everywhere. So knowing Japanese is going to lower that burden on yourself and help you make friends.

I'd also add 3. You work for an international company and are getting paid in USD or at least a currency stronger than the Yen. Quite frankly if anyone is going to spend more than the length of a tourist visa in any country, it's worth learning the language to some measure of competence out of respect at the minimum. The nice thing about that guy living in Australia, though, is a slightly shorter flight (9 or so hours vs 11-13 for us in the United States). As far as jobs, their software industry is all imported for lack of a better description and far behind domestically, would be a good way to get into a foreign company if you go that route. Might also be some options for sales as an account executive or manager for the APJ region, especially if you can speak other Asian languages, however those teams from my experience tend to be significantly smaller than their EMEA and North American counterparts, so maybe not as many openings available.

I took the dive in 2011 and moved to Seoul, South Korea. I learned the language from scratch, worked my ass off, lived there for 5 years and eventually went back home with a shit ton of experience behind my back. I married a Korean girl, we were married for 8 years but unfortunately we ended up divorcing. I'm 36 right now and I'm thinking of giving Japan a try. Probly not the same way I took a dive in 2011 but who knows. You just gotta do it. Good vid dude and wishing you the best in Japan.

It was good to see some tourist trying to explain basic stuff in English. They come with no preparation for the language, stay 1 week, expecting native Japanese to speak English. A lot of them opt out to eat garbage which you can find in USA like McCuckold, instead of trying to taste the Japanese cuisine. Obviously there was some weird shit like oysters, baby octopus etc. which I didn't eat but most of the food was good. If you wanna have a good time, leave all your manners and gestures at the airport when you arrive at Japan and watch how they act and what they do between each other.

Did the language school ask you for proof that you were learning japanese for x amount of hours? And also how much was the school itself and are you sure the high school diploma will suffice?
