Thanks. Anyone not totally illiterate already knows this, as they know that the two Knives Out movies got each of their main plot points from stories by Edgar Allan Poe.
It’s not a hard boiled or a spoof of hard boiled. It’s a noire. Or a spoof of a noire if you want to go there. A hard boiled is a detective. A noire is not a detective getting absorbed into a mystery. A noire the character doesn’t change or learn anything at the end. Just like Lebowski.
Burton Fink literally won Palme d'or. You cant be talking about Coen's most underrated film if the film isnt Miller's Crossing. Box office bomb at the time, now known as an overlooked classic.
Thank you for highlighting the work of Peter Yates. Bullitt has been a favorite of mine for 50 years (saw at a drive-in as a double feature with The Getaway). The 3 American films by Yates bring unique perspectives to the cities they were filmed in, a foreigners view of the specific time and place of their making, and perfectly fit the story and characters. They are immersive time capsules, not jaundiced or judgmental as a lot of European directors of the period saw the US; Yates was unflinching and realistic while showing respect to the places his characters occupied, his framing and lighting even giving beauty to these places. He should be ranked as among the best British filmmakers of his era. And a decade later his portrayal of small town Middle America in Breaking Away showed he did not lose his eye for detail, love of character, and care for locale.
I love this film more than I should. I got a screener of it while I was working at a video store in Bryan, TX, attending Blinn and wondering why I had left Austin. To this day, I play the hell out of Love, and I'll choke up when I think of Anthony running to be with Inez. Best movie ever.
The short stories are amazing, too. "Red Wind" is my favorite... And follows the formula impeccably. Or, perhaps, establishes the Phillip Marlowe formula... The first version had 'John Dalmas' as the detective, later retconned to Marlowe.
an adjacent point - I feel like the killing of a chinese bookie, saint jack, and big lebowski could be a trilogy when looked at through the character(s) of ben gazzara. great job tho--ever since I got into the classics, I've wanted to go in-depth on all the noir etc films that are referenced in Lebowski, both on the page and behind the camera
This is great, I love that this channel gives the Coens its share of spotlight. Some elements of the noir stories and films discussed here remind me a bit of Lynch's Lost Highway, too.
Thank you for this breakdown of The Man Who Wasn't There and the introduction to Cain. I only knew the titles, but not what the novels and movies were about. Now, to take the time to read them, but you said weekend read, so finding the time shouldn't be so hard.
Extraordinary introduction to Raymond Chandler and the Hard Boiled Genre, I love the modern adaptations of Chandler's work, especially the Long Goodbye. Great analysis of the Big Lebowski
If Hollywood did remakes or reboots in this way, I wouldn’t mind that much. Recognisable own contribution is the magic words. You’ve chewed and digested it.
What is the matter with you people? Most of this move takes place in Bartons imagination/ in that hot room. Listen to the voices he hears in the next room. They are his experiences both prior and to come... Crying in the know that Charlie is leaving / the pounding on the ground of the wresting scene between the two and another experience of his i cant immediatly recall. They are very slick and held it for all these years but hinted to it in a recent interview. Very Linchian.
Thanks to James Brooks and Columbia I guess for their patience with these guys. Bottle Rocket and the career of Anderson and the Wilsons all came out of this.
"3000 years of beautiful tradition, from Moses to Sandy Koufax, you're goddamn right I'm living in the f***in' past!" has got to be the most overlooked great line in a film of numerous quotable lines.
Great video, but I think your audio could use some work. Some parts were louder than others. Easy fix could be using some compression on your audio. Keep up the good work tho 👏
