I'm preparing myself to join the Coast Guard with 1 mission in mind. Become a rescue swimmer. No plan B. I started my journey nearly a year ago at 275lbs not eating or living right. Now I am 185 and very tone. Went from 42 in waist to 30in waist! I've been working on getting my mind right. But getting my body to the point where it can perform has also helped. I swim almost everyday with and without fins and run at least an hour a day and do tons of pull-ups/chin-ups. Plus gym time. I'm 36 years old prior service US Army Helicopter technician and also a medic, but I will join the brotherhood soon. Thanks for the interviews. I really enjoy hearing the stories. Can't wait for more

Serving in aviation, my family could never understand my sense or lack of sense of humor and mayb as a female i shouldnt b this way. I remember one night rtb seeing blinking lights coming from the ground .. im i experiencing some kind of vertigo or delirium over 6hr of flight that day but no it was actually most likely flashlights coming from the ground coastal Miss

Thank you for posting this message. There is a lot more context with this clip. I'd recommend listening the the entirety of Episode 141: Matthew Fader with Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS). I'd also recommend Ep 119: Jose Pastor Rescue Swimmer from Spain as he was dealing with a lot of the same issues. What happens when your in flight and you need to intubate your patient? It takes space to get behind the patient and get to their level to see the vocal cords to get it done? If they’re on a backboard, or in a stokes it seems like there just wouldn’t be enough room in the aircraft for all of that? Thanks
@therealresq
@therealresq 5 месяцев назад
This is a scenario and circumstance situation. It would depend on how long the flight would be. What aircraft you're flying in. The few times I have been involved with this, we were on the ground when the intubation happened. Either stabilize the paitent and tube them before you take off or as soon as you land before you shut down. As you probably know, there are the treatment plans that you can do if you're not in a position to intubate. This is definitely a deeper conversation. Happy to discuss more if you'd like. Feel free to email me at jason@therealresq.com.
@starofitaly
@starofitaly Месяц назад
Hey, specific to the story I shared, the patient was intubated in the helicopter using a Glide Scope. It’s basically a small mobile version of the laryngoscope/fiber optic camera that you would see used in a surgical/hospital environment. Like any tool, there are limitations but usually they work fantastic and make it easy to visualize your landmarks and place your ET tube. Great question and I hope you enjoyed the episode. My name is Gary. I’m the Gary that Bob is speaking of flying the Otter on his final rescue in the Coast Guard. There was not enough room on the helo to take all 10 of us so they took 4 people to Kanak Island where a Cessna 180 was waiting on the beach to take them to Cordova and to the hospital to be checked out. Bob stayed with me and the other 5 passengers. We chatted until the helo returned. He noticed my U.S. Navy ball cap and asked me what years I was in. I told him 1964 to 1978. He stuck out his hand and said “thank you for serving”. I was stunned into silence. I’m not gonna lie I even got a tear in my eye. I was 54 yo at the time and no one had ever thanked me for wearing the uniform. After that he would stop by when he was in Cordova to check on me to see how I was doing. I’m here to tell you there is no finer human being on this planet. I consider it an honor to know him and call him a friend. “No brain no pain” he would always say when I would see him running on the Copper River Highway. Enjoy your retirement Bob. You deserve it.
