Crazy kicks. I would say the last thing standing in the way of wushu is clinging to pseudomartial arts. Just get rid of the swords and spears and do insane kicks!
Changes in wushu routines have been undergoing trial runs in china where there is a larger focus on the acrobatic movements and less on the martial arts movements. There are still weapons events however.
