I was a beechcrafter in the late 70’s early 80’s just before the starship development. Would have been interesting to see the big auto claves and composite work areas. Much better looking airplane than the later piaggio canard (which was more successful).

Man, I never would have guessed that vintage Army Air Corps paint scheme would so drastically change and IMPROVE the whole affect of that little plane. Somebody made an excellent choice, and somebody did an excellent job. Now it would fit right in with the Chipmonks and the Stearmans ... Stearmen .. Stea ... Lol .. Call it the PT-415, right?

Looked really great but had some problems. The composite structure had a conductive aluminiun layer (like the PBLS layer used today) which corroded. Because pt6 config meant that the exhaust went through the propeller the prop blade hubs corroded. I changed two engine mounts (I think number 1 eng) which cracked due to vibration. It ended up with loads of large anti-vibration (like large tuning forks) dampers bolted to the inner fuselage skins. There was other problems but I can't remember, ive not seen one since the mid 90's. Still think it would have been worth developing. Beechcraft learned a lot from this aircraft especially in composites a lot of which was used in the B390 but that had its own set of problems and is no longer in production either! Thats aviation for you!
@rpscherer
@rpscherer 7 лет назад
NC-51 is 23 years old and has experienced zero corrosion of the conductive screen. We just overhauled the props and the hubs were found to be within spec and were returned to service. The tuning forks were for noise cancellation, not vibration. Never have a cracked engine mount.

Always been a fan of Canards and Rutan's made a few of those. My favorite is the Long-EZ spin off, the Berkut. Other's tried too, take the Piaggio Avanties. I'll want one of those when I sell my bitcoins and Apple shares... Some specs on the Spaceship would be nice (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beechcraft_Starship#Specifications_.282000A.29). Being twice as fast as the Partenavia they must have flown at minimum speed (mind you, these planes (almost) never stall or spin) for not to outrun it.
