I saw the film on TV for the first time yesterday. Already then I noticed that the ladder by the bowls is divided (4:44). Therefore only the upper ladder broke away. When Hunter jumps onto the rope you can see the intact lower ladder. Hunter could have simply climbed down the ladder and gotten help ;-)
