The last scene of them kissing by the window, along with the music, is the saddest fucking thing. Because it embodies what would've happened if Briony owned up to her lie and it could never happened.
We see them through the window as if it's a framed picture and the picture fades away, because that's a glimpse into the image Briony created in her head, which never happened.
Richard II's crown would have been part of the crown jewels which Oliver Cromwell melted down. This recreated version looks as though it's based on a very similar crown (a queen's) from the same period which Richard II had at the time and which survives now in Europe. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_of_Princess_Blanche
There are two versions of this movie, the British version and the American version. As far as I can remember this is from the British version. There is less talking during this scene in the Anerican version.
Am I the only one who thinks the parents should share the blame? They raised Briony so leniently, which stroked this fanciful, bold attitude. She was 13! Plenty of time to teach her about consequences and the gravity of things
Also, she was very overprotected. Although it was the 1930s, they acted like Victorian prudes and didn't teach her anything about sex, hence why she interpreted Robbie and Cecilia's relationship so terribly yet not deliberately.
@@annaparker6548 Another factor is that Briony grew up in the country. The cities have always been more liberal when it comes to social and sexual issues.
Everyone in the comment section said they fell in love with James McAvoy because of this movie. Meanwhile, I fell in love with the band Sigur Ros and their song Hoppipolla because of this movie 🎵
One of the great scenes in "Atonenent". Briony is the embodiment of regret. Absolutely painfull. Romola Garai is brilliant here, she truly deserved an Academy Award nomination.

What happens time and again in his writing is his ability to utterly immerse himself into his characters, so that he sees everything from their perspective. He can't help making Richard III a genius, or Richard II sympathetic or Cleopatra glamorous and brilliant. Because he was all those things. Or he could imagine them. He made better versions of themselves than they were. He had a strange and remarkable gift. His works will be performed until the lights go out.
Someone please tell me that I wasn't the only one who thought that was Benadryl Coughsyrup at first? (Idk his name can be recognised even though if you spell it incorrectly 😂)
