Paddler upper arm and hand too high. This reduces length of most efficient and effective stroke. Paddle starts wrong ie pushing down on water. At exit pulling up on water. There is too much pulling with small muscles of arms instead of leg drive then torso and then pushing. Pulling is weak vs pushing think of a javelin or shot putter. Tension up thru feet hip torso then release and push

I did this in 2000 and got sucked under for a bit. Was a great experience but probably wouldn’t tackle it again without any serious training or preparation.

Salute to those guides that are the real pros on that river. For some people, the Zambezi is a bucket list item. For others, it's their daily job. Respect.
I’m an ex rower. I don’t understand why it isn’t a pushover for the rowers. In rowing the main muscle groups used are the legs,...the arms are only used to finish off the stroke, wheras in the kayak the arms do all the work. It seems to me to be a contest between arms and legs...so why don’t the legs win?
Arms are not really used as in rowing. In the kayak the stroke starts at the legs, then the core of the body follows. Most of the power is focused at the moment the blade grabs the water. The arms are like the riggers of the rowing boat. They have just an supporting function.
I am an ex competitive rower and I now I am also starting kayaking. In Kayak part of the force is legs and hips rotation, so you got a big percentage from legs (but definitely not as much as in rowing). If these race would be at least 1500 meters the rowing team would have defeated the Kayakers. Both sports are great, but the kayak does give you a great flexibility to go into smaller places and flows.
I note that the rowers were in the middle of the river whereas the kayakers were tucked into the bank and where the river curved. So the kayakers were in still calm water while the rowers were in the full current and rougher conditions. I've spent many years on a river, and the difference in the current is worth several lengths even over such a short race. To be fair, two races should be held, one with the rowers tucked into the bank and the kayakers out in the middle of the river.
