Correction note: as multiple people have pointed out, there is so far no "official" representation of the Psycho Gundam Unit 8, aside descriptions of it being white and nicknamed the refrigerator. The white Psycho Gundam used to depict it in the video is actually a fanpainted project who applied the Psycommu Zaku HMT colors to the Psycho Gundam HG

Entirely (well, mostly) unrelated comment: could you please do a video explaining what's going on with anti-beam coating in U.C.? I recall that originally the only use of anti-beam coating during the OYW was supposedly on the Gelgoog's zulu shield, which was not only said to be a rather crude attempt, but even required the shield to have its peculiar round shape to improve its lacking effectiveness and take the incoming shot, which couldn't be from close range, at an angle. The EF supposedly didn't even use it since barely any Zeon MS used beam weapons at the time the Gundam was developed and remained so even later by the time the GM began rolling out. Fast forward, during the Gryps war the Hyaku Shiki and the golden Zeta Gundam used by Grey Wolf (Gundam Evolve) had their distinctive golden paint because it was the most efficient color of anti-beam coating, and yet I don't recall either being able to outright shrug incoming beams. Which brings us to more modern depictions, such as Unicorn, Thunderbolt and UC Engage, where there's some ridiculously effective anti-beam coating around, fully capable of blocking beams with distinctively non-golden painted shields. From Thunderbolt the cake goes to a GM blocking a Bigro's anti-ship beam cannon at point blank range, while Unicorn has a Jegan fully blocking with its shield a Gaza D's souped up hyper knuckle buster beam. Perhaps oddest of all, a Zee Zulu that can disregard the incoming beam shots from the Byarlant Custom, which just prior was earring holes into a Zogok. UC Engage also showed a battle at Augusta between AEUG and Titans MS, such as Hizacks, Marasai's, GM IIs and Nemo's, capable of fully blocking beams with their shields. Is there a way to reconcile this? Personally I don't like these newer depictions since they almost make beam shields irrelevant, if anti-beam coating good enough to fully block beams is available. In the particular case of Zeon MS, which generally don't use shields and even have heavy units like the Dom series and derived units, which are meant to be heavily armored to better endure incoming enemy fire, I find puzzling that they wouldn't just plaster their MS exteriors with this stuff if it was readily available. Lastly, I want to particularly highlight the aforementioned case of the Zee Zulu, which I'm not even sure if it is actually using anti-beam coating, of if the implication is that its titanium/ceramic composite armor is so much better at resisting low output beam shots compared to older OYW MS that used super high tensile steel instead. I want to think that isn't the case, namely because during CCA both sides used mass produced units armored with TCC and switched to lower output, but higher firing rate handheld beam weapons, which I would assume would result in similar outcome as the Zee Zulu vs Byarlant Custom beams if following the same logic.

perhaps I misunderstand but wouldn't swapping out the frame of a first generation mobile suit for a moveable frame be somewhat pointless anyway? since all the mobile suit's systems are contained within a movable frame you'd basically have to make an entirely new mobile suit to fit the shell of the original MS.

Congratulations! I know I sometimes nitpick on some points of your videos, but I really enjoy your content, and have come to like so much more about late U.C. thanks to your videos! I really need to point this out though: are you sure the Silver Bullet can fire the shield Mega Launcher with the same power as the Doven Wolf? I believe the important part of connecting the gun to its torso wasn't so much connecting it to the toros beam cannons, but rather directly connecting it to the MS main reactor, which the Silver Bullet wouldn't be able to. We see this best exemplified with the Gaza series, whose knuckle buster weapons have high output thanks to being linked directly to the MS torso, while the Gazowmn has a lower output (but higher fire rate) version that uses e-pac instead. Furthermore, in the Unicorn OVAs the Gallus K is specifically said to sue the Gazowmn's knuckle buster as fixed beam cannon, which seems to be another high output, low fire rate weapon. The Zaku III's unused mega launcher, which the wikia has an image of incorrectly marked as a generic "bazooka",would also be meant to be plugged into the torso of the Zaku, in a similar position as a Gaza knuckle buster, so this again reinforces the idea that a key mechanic here is the ability to connect the weapon directly to the MS reactor. The wikia has an image of 3 Silver Bullets firing a set of Jean beam rifles and shield rifles, making the later look far more powerful, but I don't think these are meant to be 40 MW beams, but rather just the 12.5 MW standard version of the weapon, which would still look far more powerful compared to a Jegan's puny beam rifle, which IIRC we don't have an actual MW figure for, but the description indicates that it has lower output than the GM III's 2.8MW rifle, though again in exchange of a higher rate of fire. Based on the above, I'm confident to say that the Doven Wolf is the better design of the two, though it in itself is only surpassed by the AMX-014R Rebel Wolf simply due to its modularity allowing it to be highly customizable for each pilots preferences and capabilities. Thanks for you answer on the Hario, though I'm not quite sold on it, though being fair I know even less about the Lombardia. It just seems weird that given how the Titans appropriated every good piece of EF equipment (example: the Barzam), they would let the EF keep a better version of their Alexandria battleship. I do like the explanation for the Zaku Cannons, specially because using Hizack frames for these units, the Zaku Marien types and Gouf Flight types does overcome the issues of these units having very short production runs during the OYW, thus justifying more units being around. I should point out that the Titans also used the Zaku Cannon, as seen from the one unit fighting alongside Hizacks & Barzams at Kilimanjaro. Only wish we had gotten some more info on how this ground unit with thrusters only on its legs (which I will keep pointing out seem based on the YMS-09 leg thrusters) could operate in space without even backpack thrusters. The Target In Sight & 0081 version did replaced the attachment point for the big guns with a small thruster unit, but that's about the only example that comes to mind on how it could possibly work. I was hoping to that the MSM-02 Aqua/Hydro was somehow connected to the YMS-08 and/or MS-08TX, given its peculiar head and Zaku like body, unlike the skinny Zudah & Gyan frame or the bulkier Zimmad designs like the Gogg & Dom. I do vaguely recall form the mechatalk forums comments on neither of these machines being from Zimmad though, but rather designs that the Zeon ground forces came up due to the problems of the MS-06J and the need for better MS. Personally, I would have much preferred for the YMS-08 and/or MS-08TX series to be MIP designs, specially after seeing how with the YMSM-04 Zeryon MIP do was trying to compete in the MS department from earlier on. Essentially the MS-07 series would be Zeonic's attempt to fix the Zakus low mobility problem, while the MS-09 series would be Zimmad's, leaving the YMS-08 and/or MS-08TX as Zimmad's proposal to address the issue. I do agree that the MS-08TX doesn't seem based on the YMS-08, specially given the omission of jet leg thrusters, which made the YMS-08 better than the YMS-07, leading the rest of the MS-07 series to adopt the feature. Lots of other interesting things in this video I want to discuss, but I'll have to cut this comment short, I will try to make another one touching on other topics later on.

Thanks for answering my question! From the sources I've seen, the Efreet tends to be listed as a product of the California base without any direct involvement from either Zeonic or Zimmad. My assumption was that after Zeonic had finished looking over the YMS-08 and gotten what they needed out of it the remaining prototypes eventually wound up at the California Base, where the base's engineering teams started poking around with them and eventually ended up developing the Efreet (either by heavily modifying and overhauling the existing YMS-08 units, or using them as a starting point for new-production MS that were built onsite). That being said, I don't know how well the timeline on that works out, and your explanation also makes a lot of sense. Some miscellaneous thoughts about a few of the other questions: 1) This may be a controversial opinion, but I think Unicorn and NT should be taken as their own parallel version of UC similar to The Origin or Thunderbolt rather than part of the main timeline. My main reason for this is that I dislike how the reveal of Laplace's Box retroactively rewrites the arc of the Universal Century. I'm of the opinion that Tomino's core version of the timeline (0079, Z, ZZ, CCA, Hathaway, F91, and Victory) is a story of social decline and political tragedy. That the Earth Federation starts off as at least light grey (certainly not entirely benevolent, but still having good qualities), but due to the trauma of the One Year War and the stresses of several decades of continuous conflicts it steadily becomes further subsumed by corruption and hardliner extremists until you get to Victory where the Federation is basically just an empty husk. An anti-war story where the message is that war isn't just destructive and corrosive on a personal level, but on a national level as well: War doesn't just destroy people, it destroys societies. The idea presented by Laplace's Box, that the Federation was always just as corrupt and malicious as it's shown to be in later works like CCA and Hathaway, is to me a much flatter and less interesting story. It also reeks of Zeon fanboys trying to whitewash the setting's all but literal space Nazis and going "See? We were the real good guys the whole time!", which I find really slimy. 2) Regarding the non-UC series, I can definitely understand not being into them. For the fans who like digging into the obscure details and side materials, the "one and done" mentality a lot of them are produced under isn't going to be very appealing. The closest any of them get to that level of depth is CE, and even that gets blown out of the water by the leviathan that is UC. And that's before we get into the often wildly different tones and aesthetics they go with that can be off-putting to someone that prefers the style of UC. All that being said, I do think they're ultimately necessary for the continuation of Gundam as a whole. As much as I like UC stuff, Sunrise can't just keep milking the 0079-0093 era over and over again without it eventually becoming stale.

The Marasai, Hyuaku Shiki and Nemo likely don't have a proper movable frame based on the Mk II's data, given the timing of their development: the window for AE to get the actual data and implement it on those MS is too short. In fact, don't forget that the lack of such technology is the main reason that the Delta Gundam got downgraded into the Hyaku Shiki instead. Also, I don't think that replacing the external armor of the Gelgoog was the problem, but rather the internal components, which is why the Nemo, a machine made by AE, in other words ex-Zeon engineers, was the most suitable and cheap MS to use parts from, instead of an EF GM II.

The Lombardia was rejected for mass production/adoption, but at least one ship of the class was built, with the namesake ship being used by the Titans for MS testing since it had larger, better MS maintenance hangers than an Alexandria, even if it was severely lacking in the firepower department. It was pressed into combat service during the final battle of the Gryps War, but it's unknown if it survived. The single ship seen in the late UC manga may very well be the Lombardia itself, assuming it survived the battle, since we know the Earth Federation mothballed all Titans ships and mobile suits rather than use them, even during the Neo Zeon War, and they were only dug out and refitted decades later when the stigma surrounding the Titans had gone away. The mass-produced Alexandria-class was treated the same way, an excellent heavy cruiser that was mothballed for decades, then refitted, upgraded, and pushed into service in the late UC. The Hario is a commander-use variant of the Alexandria, with better sensors, communications, and more defenses for the enlarged bridge. It was a more recent variant of the Alexandria produced during or just prior to the Gryps War, so only a handful were built. As for why it had Zaku Cannons modified for space use, the EFSF and Titans were both producing and experimenting with Zeon OYW designs to develop their own MS, so likely these Zaku Cannons were being used to acquire data for the development of the Hizack Cannon and similar MS. Much like we saw the EFSF using MS-11 Act Zakus (which were studied during development of the Hizack and its beam rifle copied and modified for the Hizaxk) and Gouf Flight Types (from which the Titans acquired data that helped them during the development of the Byarlant). A commander-type ship, with its improved sensors, comms, and coordination capabilities would be ideal for testing MS and gathering data. The Alexandria was partly based on the Musai-class light cruiser and the Pegasus-class carrier, but wasn't a OYW design, it first entered service in 0083 along with the rollout version of the GM Quell. The EFSF did make use of a limited number of Alexandria heavy cruisers, but the majority of production went to the Titans since they were the "elite" branch of the military and had the biggest budget, while the EFSF got the leftovers. Hence why during Z Gundam we only see the EFSF fielding a handful of new units, while mostly using GM II's, Hizacks, and OYW designs like the Act Zaku. They only made limited use of the Galbaldy, only assigning them to Luna II and ships operating from there. The Titans, meanwhile, played around like kids in a candy shop and had all kinds of expensive, limited production, experimental MS like the Gabthley, Hamrabi, Marasai, etc. A LOT of Gryps War-era EFSF and Titans MS were based on OYW Zeon prototypes or just outright copied from them, much like many countries after WW2 copied Nazi planes, tanks, and small arms. The Hizack is based on data from the MS-06F Zaku II, MS-06FZ Zaku II Kai, and MS-11 Act Zaku, combined with tech from the RGM-79 GM, the Galbaldy B is developed from the prototype Galbaldy A (itself a copy of the Gelgoog using parts from the Gyan so Zimmad could produce it as a second standard MS), the Xeku Eins was built from Zeon blueprints captured on Pezun, the various Zaku Mariner/Marine Hizack variants were developed from the Zaku Marine, and the EFSF and Titans just outright built a bunch of MS-11 Act Zakus, Gouf Flight Types, Zaku Cannons, etc. More than Zeon did during the OYW, in fact. We even see in 0083 that the EFSF is testing various captured Zeon MS, including the Zaku II and Gelgoog Marine, years after the OYW ended and these designs would be considered "obsolete". Hell, the Rick Dias was based on the Dowas, the final production version of the Rick Dom from the OYW. And not only did we see that the Juaggu is still a formidable design in UC 0096, it's even stated that more replicas of the Juaggu were produced after the OYW than there were originals during the OYW; we just never are told WHO was making these replicas. While it's stated that hobbyists and collectors build their own copies of various MS for personal use (hence the Hobby Hizack), it makes more sense that the EFSF would be building more Zeon MS to test and experiment with for their own MS development projects.

Honestly considering for the longest time that I thought late universal century actually was an alternate time line I don't think the idea of that being the case is so bad but even if it isn't , the ending of unicorn is probably one of my favorites because it's a hopeful display of the possibilities of the future.
@gtf234
@gtf234 20 дней назад
Honestly, I didn't even know this was a common train of thought. I am not really sure how one would think Unicorn's conclusion averts much of anything in Late UC. If anything Unicorn's ending clearly paves the way for those things as part of the ending was the Federation declaring it would be scaling back its military spending and shrinking its presence in space.... Mars Zeon/Oldsmobile Army were always framed as their own offshoot of Zeonic holdouts who largely would not care about anything related to Unicorn's events and are just doing their own thing (and AOZ basically has 4 or so different 'incarnations' of Mars Zeon in the collective UC lore since "Mars Zeon" is constantly changing hands on what old-guard Zeon loyalists are in charge, plus all the Titans remnants they take in and separatists who frankly want little to do with the Zeon name and image and instead want Mars to do its own thing) , and all the other relevant factions had nothing to do with anything Zeon-adjacent, such as Cosmo Babylon and the Jupiter Empire. Zanscare formed as a religious cult/peasant uprising in a completely different Side than Zeon and was backed by Jovian money. The Laplace Box Incident largely putting the original Zeonic Republic issues to bed wouldn't really impact any of those events nor does it halt the economic decline of Earth that results in the Federation cutting so many costs that they're are unable to maintain a contemporary military presence out in space to prevent rich assholes from uncontested empire building; they were repeatedly stretching MS design and upgrades for decades past due, like both the Jegan and Javelin were dragged out into 30 years of service.
@korbinservergundam
@korbinservergundam 20 дней назад
@gtf234 Because unicorn's ending isn't about any of those factions and because you know it Isn't supposed to reckon Their existence either. And yes , it does have an impact on all of those events defeating the sleeves who were the most organized of the remnants of Zeon and who still had solid connections to anaheim electronics. The sleeves were managing to organize attacks both on earth and in space by eliminating them those "military holdouts" were just that hold outs.They weren't an organized faction, all working together. As for the rest of The non Zeon factions those weren't a thing until the late universal century And they were developed heavily in secret so there wouldn't have been much of a way to prevent them from becoming a problem during the era of unicorn. The Laplace incident was purely about stopping the sleeves and full frontal, as well as looking into the future far beyond V Gundam or G Savior. And? Them shrinking heir budget and military presence also provided them with a longer stint of peace in space. A lot of the early wars that happened in early universal century were caused by the earth's federations military expansionism.

@thatonequeergundamfan71 Are you kidding me. The flaws don't stop. The designs are all absolutely atrocious and plain ugly, and none of them look anything like actual mobile suits or a gundam. The story makes absolutely no sense, and the characters are all about as interesting as a wet paper bag. I'll give them credit that at least the idea of a destroyed world with advanced technology trying to rebuild is cool, but they botched it, and they did it infinitely better with MS Saga and iron blooded orphanes.

I always thought the ending of unicorn actually made things worse. Laying the ground work for the separatism of the other sides.
