super cool! Love your channel. I rescued a puppy and thought she was a beagle but it turns out she is a swissy so I have been searching everywhere for info.
I just love the walkthru of all your hardware here! My pupper and I have done some pulling using a skijoring harness and it really brought out her inner athlete. As we're on an acreage, the thought of introducing a more practical element is fantastic, so I've been looking for resources to either source or build a cart harness and/or cart. Videos like yours are invaluable! Thank you for putting this together and sharing your experience!
I love the video and have bought most everything to build it. My question is how do you actually bend the conduit? Is there a video about that? What tools are necessary? Someone else asked similar question about bending the conduit but there was not an answer that explained the bending process in detail. Thank you so much! 😊
Easiest way would probably be to hold it with two hands and push it against a tree outside to make your bend. Another option would be putting two thick bolts into a piece of 2x4 and securing them with nuts. Then place the conduit between the two bolts and apply pressure from the end of the conduit. It'll bend real easy that way
I use the one finger wave. I also have other methods like, flashing my lights once or twice (quick flashes) and depending on whos in the truck with me i will do the four ways as well
Cool, your 1 of the few women l'd actually listen to unlike the delusional bitch whose vid featured her 'training's an alsatian for carting, those dogs ain't got the hips for it(ask any vet) just tack your cart to a rottweiller and thier good to go no'training' required and thier built and bred for it,idiots l can tolerate, idiots that think they know better l can't/won't, u mam know and can build yer stuff 🐶 x Pepperdog181@gmail.com Glasgow
You have to get a piece(s) of conduit and start practicing bending first. Then you can measure the dog and figure out how you want the shafts to bend. It will also depend on where the shafts attach to the cart. Do you have photos of your cart?
Very well done and informative Steady Hand work on the camera I rate this 4 1/2 out of 5 stars for ingenuity for cost effectiveness might I suggest a handbrake and a headlight for that it would have given you five out of five
Where do you get the harness? What age is best to start a St Bernard? I have a 10 month old. I have a Radio Flyer, were would I find the plans to convert it for my dog?
Stacey Turpin I’m a harness dealer through Nordkyn.com. You can start teaching the skills at any age. Things like back up, walking next to a shaft, and side stepping do not require a cart. I start them in a lightweight cart around 14-18 months old.
I have a 16 month old foxhound, around 60lbs I'd say, how long do the shafts have to be? what size PVC? Sorry video got really quiet in the beginning and only was able to hear that yours are a little over 4 foot due to you having Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs? o.o I hope I got that right. XD I also want to make sure my dog can pull my weight (urban dog sledding) so how do you train for that? Please help! love your video BTW!!!
Measure your dog from the point on her check to the rear hock and add about 22 inches, then add about 10-14 inches for the part of the shaft that attaches to your cart. I'm going to take a rough guess that it is about 4 ft of shaft if you do not do a bend. My dogs aren't that much longer than a 60lb dog. :o) I use 1/2 PVC.
you don't don't do this stuff with that small of a dog you're just going to destroy its joints and make it miserable get a bigger dog like a bandog or something around that size with a similar frame and then make one Jesus Christ just get a real dog that will not only enjoy drafting but it will be useful like what I do with my dog I go down to this little Wooded Trail a few minutes away and I cut down some brush and have her drag it into the middle of the trail so I can cut it up for firewood more easily
I was wondering if this build would work for my dog, she is small, about 30lbs and short, roughly the height of a beagle. Would she be too short for this?
it has nothing to do with height it's just not big enough it's not going to be strong enough to pull anything if it's not any sort of drafting dog then don't do drafting with it end of story I mean seriously a dog that's small probably wouldn't enjoy it either
can you give me a rule of thumb for the lenth (in proportion to the dogs body) the training shafts should be? - from shoulder to - 5 inches behind? or 12" behind? or long enough to drag the ground?... Thank you
Hi Terri, A good rule of thumb is that training shafts start just in front of the point of shoulder (if you were looking at the profile, about even with the chest), and it should run to about 12 inches behind the dog's hock. That should give you about an 18 inch arch. Here's a post that has some more of the details: caninedraftwork.blogspot.com/2010/01/is-there-judge-out-there-named-steve.html
