They're still pretty underrated imo
Thanks for doing the video, I'm about to do something similar, good idea with the bags, and that base looks nice and sturdy. I'm moving to stands partly so I can move to as small a desk as possible as I when I measured with REW I thought the desk reflections were making a big difference specifically a big dip at 80Hz then big hump at 120. - Do you think that dip at 100Hz on your graph might be the desk reflection?
thanks for the excellent question! 80,100 and 120 are not desk reflections. they are more than likely room modes the low freq cancelling itself out due to the size and shape of the room. search for "amroc room calc". on google. you can put your room measurements in and it will show the problem frequencies. keep me posted. cheers, john

Interesting, this is the first time I've ever seen an LA2 style used on drums, where typically they're used for things with much slower transients as the release is not that fast on these. I'll have to try it.
I always mix on my custom built nearfield monitors but every good audio engineer should have at least a couple different types of speakers to hear how mixes perform on speakers typical of the application. It's kinda like the history of the Yamaha NS-10 every recording engineer knows they're not technically the most accurate monitors but they were very relevant to be able to judge if something in the mix could be heard on typical bookshelf speakers at the time. Now as tastes and technologies evolve I think it's even more relevant to test on different style speakers. Now my alternative test speakers are no longer my Alesis Monitor 2 as large monitors have gone out of favor towards 2.1 systems in the home. Instead I use Energy Take Classics with the rear ports sealed up and paired with a Skar EVL-6.5 subwoofer. I think this is a good representation of typical computer 2.1 and soundbar/subwoofer setup most non-audiophiles would have and it would benefit a lot of audio engineers to know how to mix for a 2.1 setup. The Energy Take Classics in my opinion are some of the most revealing micro speakers ever made and definitely outclass most micro monitors "built" for mixing, Mackie CR3, Audio Engine A2+, Presonus E3.5, I've tried out a lot of purpose built monitors and none sound as revealing as simple Energy Take Classic HT speakers now hooked up to a TPA3116D2 2.1 amplifier.
