Must you folks turn everything racial? We folks can speak about race and whatever we want to speak about especially if race and one's place in the world are central themes of this movie. Jim Crow would have been part of Ralph's everyday life, essentially he was a second class citizen so how could he suddenly see himself differently a few days later? This film speaks about America's social and racial issues of the time which still exists now and in some ways it's much worse. Very good movie... A hell of a lot better than Guess Who's Coming to Dinner...
I regret missing David Lynch speak in New Haven, CT. I couldn't get the day off to attend and I was furious. I should have called out "sick." I knew it was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Even though I don't have much Interest in his transcendental mediation practices I love listening to him talk about creativity and how you should keep your mind open to new ideas, even if they are just fragments and not fully realized yet. I still have his book Catching the Big Fish, as well the audiobook version. Not much in ways of practical advice but it does liberate your mind and encourages you not to discard those farfetched thoughts. He's a fascinating person.
She seems rude in her responses after David answers. It makes me feel sad for him. He’s such a gentle person who already hates giving interviews…I don’t know why people have to be as snarky as she is.
I interpret this as looking for signs of intelligence. Can they hold a conversation? Can they discuss a film through to the end? Considering most of Hollywood picks based on looks or connections, some of Hollywood has historically picked based on the casting couch, and much of Hollywood lacks decent scripts or filmmaking vision to make doing a reading very meaningful anyway, it isn't a bad approach.
So you feel Ralph's pain everyday, i strongly suggest you seek therapy. You're no better than Ralph who couldn't get over his on prejudice about racism and segregation to see that Sarah loved him for who he was and not for the color of his skin. Even when this film was made there were many black and white couples that got together so to say that Sarah couldn't have loved Ralph before the so called war is a stretch and she sure as hell didn't look like a socialite to me.
I dont agree with you that this is a race based film. I was a child of the 50s and 60s and the cold war was in full swing. Young people were taught to to get under their desks in the event of atomic warfare. Many of us were afraid. The film was apocalyptic in my view and it showed the possibilities that faced mankind. I didnt care about the black and white racial differences or the hangups surrounding them. I was concerned about the loneliness of their situation like unto Robinson Crusoe in fictional writing. Must you folks turn everything into a racial argument? Is that the limit of your understanding?
I clicked without noticing the length of the video, and I was getting ready for an interesting analysis and whatnot. I think I prefer this Lynchian response. Good deal, Mr. Lynch.
Whatever eccentric methods he has for choosing actors or sets etc. the results speak for themselves in the amazing movies he’s made for over forty years.
interesting as I was thinking the other day that David Lynch would appreciate and even be influenced by Werner Herzog..... two genius film makers...I agree with his choice
Lynch pronounced the title in a wrong way, the correct title is "Woyzeck" ( Werner Herzog, 1979). Plot: Franz Woyzeck, a lowly soldier stationed in a mid-nineteenth century provincial German town, is the father of an illegitimate child by his mistress Marie. Woyzeck will commit a murder...
Well, I guess some amateur would say that "Alright, Im gonna follow this process" but for me every director has its process to know actors. There's not correct process, it's more like experience with some tips from others or not. Me personally, in the circumstances of choosing carefully but faster in pre production while being in film school, I wouldn't follow this. Lynch mostly, or EVEN for Mulholland Drive, he has money, the production has money and time, so they take it on their own (except in Eraserhead, I guess there the process was different), but a film student doesn't have that much money and time, so casting has to be different
Best correction ever. Elephant man&The straight story are 2 of the most human and delicately touched films of the cinema, and they have been made by the master of mistery...!!
