After a life-altering spinal cord injury, I proved that a wheelchair could take me places others never would have dared imagine. I was injured in 1989 while tumbling at the age of 16. I sustained a C6-7 spinal cord injury which left me paralyzed from the chest down. I work with an international non-profit organization to ensure our workers stay healthy emotionally, physically, and spiritually while working cross-culturally. I am also a contributing writer at Bard Care.
I have a question about the video. Are you wearing something to protect your butt like a diaper? I used a transfer board two years ago to practice transfer, and I got hurt my butt, so I haven't tried it since then because I'm afraid to use the transfer board.
@@culee7321 No, but I place the board under my thighs rather than my bony bottom. Some people transfer with their bottom on the board, whereas I prefer the board under my thighs. Each person is different, though. I have discovered that wearing pants is the best. Wearing shorts just doesn’t work for me when I use a sliding board.
This gave me some ideas that I might can put contacts in again. My left arm and hand are worse than yours and I can't turn my head to left from a screw in my neck. Congratulations you do it so well and quick.
I did it !! lol It's crazy how all these years I thought with 1 hand. And my 1 good hand is less function than yours, but I figured putting both eye contacts in less than 15 mins. Thanks for the advice and encouragement. This really helps because I am going to start driving again soon and allows me to get contacts and not worry my glasses slip while driving. And just so much more giving me the boost of accomplishment. Thank you so much.
I had my BCIR in 2001 for my Crohn’s Disease. I’ve had 3 major surgeries since then due to the scar tissue on my small intestines. I was lucky enough to find a doctor in NYC that was familiar with this procedure. It definitely made a difference in my life as I don’t have to worry about any accidents. I am currently on Stelara which seems to keep my Crohn’s in check. Overall this procedure was well worth it. I wish you the best of luck.
Jenny Smith, this is an excellent video, and you do a wonderful job explaining your journey with BCIR procedure. I’m just starting a bowel routine in spinal cord rehabilitation so this is new to me and looking at the different options. Thank you
I have a good tricep on my left side. On my right, I've had a tendon transfer to work as a (posterior deltoid). While it functions well, it's not as strong as my other side and I typically externally rotate and lock it out.
@@JennySmithRollsOn 🤩🤩 oh thank you so much. I’m PT student 4 year finding the way for my C6 patient to transfer. Your video give me an idea 🌤️ . Love u
You're an angel. A beautiful woman inside and out. Thank you for sharing your personal story. I always learn a lot from you. I can only hope to meet a woman as you someday.
I'm smiling ear to ear watching you do this. I pray to see my mom moving around like you in this lifetime again. May God continue to bless and guide you. ❤
No, unfortunately, medication and awareness are the only options at this time. For low blood pressure, there's been some research that shows epidural stimulators are helpful.
@@JennySmithRollsOn Yeah, talk about awareness, I've had it for 30 years and my doctors have always thought it was anxiety, I just now learned about the term a month ago and of course it explains the low body temperature and the bizarre headaches and blood pressure spikes.
❤I was blown away at how you managed your crockpot sitting in a wheelchair, well done. It’s not easy being disabled I know but what I 🎉say always try to not let our disabilities limit us.
Overall, Rome was great. In about a week I'll have an article up on my website about it. You can sign up for my mailing list if you don't want to miss it. JennySmithRollsOn.com
It was the longest escalator I’ve ever seen! And felt! I’m not sure how tall the ceiling was because I was looking in front of me, focusing on my balance. We were in the depths of Rome that’s for sure.
Walmart gave out free wrapping paper cutters last year and I realized it was so small and didn't fit any of my rolls. I love how yours is a larger size! I may get me one of those and throw the Walmart special in the garbage!! LOL
I have an impossible too. I have a contracture in my right arm it's at like a 60° angle so I can't lock my elbows out. In the hospital I had a trach and I had trouble telling people anything lol they couldn't hear me and the only way I could handle the pain was to press my thumbs to my chin and hold there for hours. So now I have this contracture on both sides the left is only slight because the tricep is stronger but it makes it impossible to transfer the way they teach. So I came up with my own way I turn on my side drive the chair up next to the bed it's a tilt in space I raise the legs and recline the back and roll into my chair I have choreographed a whole process so that I can do everything without any assistance or supervision when I showed my therapist they said oh my God that is so dangerous I said I do it everyday now so I know what you mean by conquering the impossible I do it every time I figure a way to circumvent my limitations thank you for your videos you're teaching me a lot
I'm a c6/7 quad also I have severe neuropathic pain in my hands most of my tricep works on the left and very little on the right I was wondering how you manage grabbing your pants like that in your video about learning to dress yourself I got shot and paralyzed 3 years ago I was in a bad place in my life homeless and addicted to drugs and when I woke up from surgery it felt like I was burning alive so my attitude was not great most of my hospital stay I was hallucinating or in a zombie state from the drugs so I didn't get much therapy I got passed up for impatient for this reason as well I woke up one day in a nursing home with a stage 4 bed sore and realized I needed to take my life in my own hands because it was not going to get any better without some effort for myself I quit the antidepressants cold turkey that day I begged my mom to bring me home which she did and it saved my life I had a bone infection because the wound went that far when it was finally healed I got serious about therapy I started doing things on my own actually I did more at home by myself than I did in therapy I just remembered what they told me I wanted to ask you about that surgery you had to give you grip and a tricep I'm on Medicaid and I have to fight for every little thing I get but I would truly love to get a chance for those things I lift weights now with the help of my mom do you think it's possible I could qualify for this surgery?
I typically hook my thumb through a belt loop and tug. If there’s no belt loop, I put my hand inside the waist of the pants and use wrist extension to pull them up. Make sense?
@@JennySmithRollsOn yes it does thanks for the speedy reply and most especially for your videos you're short and to the point and you pack lots of info in very succinctly this is what we need not someone asking for likes and to hit the subscribe button and not a bunch of shout outs to your followers for this you get my subscription and my likes thanks
