yes you need the software either a scan tool that has the option or vag-com software so that you can get the piston to retract. There might be a manual way to do it but there is a chance you could damage it. 1 Reply
Thank-you for demonstrating, as now I am going to do my own spark plug change on my Q3. Ill rely on the cable ties too if I need to. Thank-s again. 😀 Now I feel like I can do my own. 🤜

Or rather than mess around with the e-parking brake you can put it in service mode.... 😁 Ignition on without engine running, gearbox in P or N, push the parking brake switch down to release the brake and hold it there, after ~2 seconds keep the parking brake switch pushed down and depress the accelerator all the way down (but don't push far enough to trigger the kickdown switch). Keep both the parking brake switch pushed down and the accelerator down and quickly cycle the ignition off/on by pressing the start button twice with 1-2 seconds in between. Keep the switch and accelerator pushed down for at least another 10-15 seconds and it should warn you that service mode is engaged at which point you can release. When you switch off the ignition you'll notice the parking brake is not automatically engaged. When you turn the ignition on you'll get a warning about service mode being enabled. To re-enable the parking brake follow the same process but pull the parking brake switch up to engage the brake instead. It might take a few attempts but does work well and avoids any messing around with the parking brake mechanism to change the rear pads.
This is one of the better Q3 front brake videos I have seen. I have an 2018 with 70k miles that I am going to do a puck drop and fluid purge in the next day or so. You listed the 17mm lug bolt, the other tools required, and the Tq which makes my job easier. FYI: I always coat my slider bolts with brake grease.
IVe seen really mixed reviews on amazon from people claiming that the arm actually cant hold these heavier monitors over time. How has it been for you? a year later......still holding up?
