Welcome to Helmsman Hangout, a channel for those interested in the trawler lifestyle - with a nod to my favorite trawler, the Helmsman Trawlers 38E.
Little known out East (up to now!), but well established out West where they are headquartered (Seattle), the Helmsman Trawlers line is a rugged yet refined, single diesel trawler with a full keel and protected skeg - tough and sturdy with long range capability.
My wife Alison and I welcome you aboard, We Are!, our 2024 Helmsman Trawlers 38E Pilothouse.
We hope you find the videos enjoyable and if you are interested in learning more about Helmsman Trawlers, please give me a buzz as I’m the Eastern U.S. representative.
The food, the atmosphere is spot on.. such a worthwhile place to make a pitstop! Oh, and the guys grabbing your lines are the best along the East Coast.
You're 100% right - great suggestion. I had receiving mode during this video and now that we have our MMSI number we are transmitting as well. Thanks for the comment, Greg
Loved the tour, made the engine room less overwhelming. It would be awesome to see a video of you performing your pre-cruise checklist and eventually routine maintenance.
Nice job with your videos. 3/4 NM range setting on your radar in fog at 8 Kns is not ideal IMO. You may want to increase that 2 miles when offshore. I run a dual on my Furono. Offshore; One at 1 to 2 miles and the other at 4 to 6 miles. In harbors I take it down to 3/4 to 1 Nm on overlay like you have.
Hi Bill - thanks for sharing your approach. I was adjusting my range rings yesterday from as little as 1/2 mile to 2 miles, but didn't even think of going out to 4+ miles. I'll have to try that next time! Thanks..
I might add that a good idea is to set one VHF radio to "Dual Watch" so you can also monitor commercial channel 13. Especially in commercially busy areas like New York harbor.
Magnus is doing great today on the ocean. there are no waves to speak of but plenty of 3' swell every 5 sec or so, plus passing vessels throwing wake.. Best I can tell it takes about 0.2 knots of "normal" speed when deployed.
Congrats on that beautiful boat! The drop down dish storage really sets the tone for the fact it wastes zero space and has a lot of great creative touches.
You're right.. in fact we have about 50% of the storage capacity unused at the moment.. there really is loads of space to stow gear, provisions, etc. Thanks for the comment..
Hi there.. so two of daughters go to PSU, along w/ my nephew and two of my brothers and myself attended. My wife sadly didn't go to PSU.. but that's ok! My brothers and I were there in the early 90s. We Are!
You should mention the air draft with the radar arch folded. It would be nice to know the noise level in the salon at different RPMs with and without the genset running.
Good suggestions and I'll try to incorporate that in an upcoming video... As for aircraft with the arch down - I'm going w/ 15' for my operational procuedures even though I suspect it's more like 14'6" or so. Hope that helps!
Love the pre-populated responses RU-vid provides for me to consider using in comments. For your post the suggested comment was: One day New builds today are looking like under a year and more likely in the 8 month zone. Interested, shoot me a line and I can give ya more info! gregmesserle@helmsmantrawlers.com 914-649-1666
For 38ft... it's a significant "platform" to operate from.. sturdy, long range at about 1,000 nautical miles, the woodwork, systems, etc.. Appreciate the view and comment! Greg
@@HelmsmanHangout yes - working with Van - we are on deck for 43048 - the noise level (or lack of it), was one of many attributes that sold me on Helmsman. The ride was stellar - with the hull feeling surefooted and planted - very impressive.
Hi Thomas! I love the Chesapeake and about to hit there for a few days on our way home to NYC with our 38E. If you need to step aboard or learn more about Helmsman Trawlers, please reach out to me. 914-649-1666. gregmesserle@helmsmantrawlers Send me a note and I can send you a video we don't publish on RU-vid. Cheers, Greg
We meant you at the FL Trawler show and one thing that impressed us about the Helmsman was the use of pocket doors, I guess that’s an option? My wife caught that in your video. We like the split head/shower configuration and the day head. They’re beautiful boats but we still like our sailboat but maybe there’s a Trawler in our future.
Many of our clients are former sailors... they finally come to the dark side! I just sold a 38E to a couple who sailed for 58 years... Separate head and shower is awesome.. we love it. Pocket doors are standard, never an option. Hope to see you again, I remember meeting you at Trawler Fest! Cheers, Greg
Congratulations! I’ve never heard of Helmsmen so thanks for the intro! The boat feels HUGE for a 38 footer! What’s the range? How many GPH at what speed? What CE class?
Hi there.. if you are interested in more information shoot me an email gregmesserle@helmsmantrawlers.com To answer these immediate questions: 1. GPH: depending on RPMs I'd say 3 GPH to about 5 GPH is what I'm seeing in the 1750 - 2000 RPM zone.. going approx 8-9 Knots. I am for 4 GPH.. something about being less than 5 is satisfying to me! 2. The salon is HUGE... that's one clear differentiator among others and one key reason I bought one (and now rep them). People step aboard and are amazed... full beam. 3. Range - in the 800 - 1,000 range depending on speed, currents, etc. Talk soon! Greg
OH, forgot.. CE Class - It's not officially classified (as many trawlers in this segment are not), but it's a very capable coastal cruiser .. not Class A (ocean crossing) but Class B I'd say. I'll be along the East Coast, into Bahamas so very sturdy. Hope this helps..
Greg, Great video! Please don't worry about going long or showing too much. I was very excited that you opened cabinets that I haven't seen opened on other videos. So put me in the same column as @slomoking, I will watch this one a few times
Thanks for sharing. My wife and I are looking at the 38e along with a couple others. Not close to purchasing yet. You could do an hour long video on the 38e and I'd watch it more than once. Quick question, where does your shore power plug into?
Ha, I know the process well my friend.. my wife and I spent nearly two years going to boat shows, stepping aboard at local marinas, RU-vid videos (a ton of wathcing!) - check out TrawlerForum.com. In the end the Helmsman (against my decision criteria) was the clear chose - but had to go through the process to realize that. My goal is to create videos to plug the holes in the content that is out there for Helmsman.. hope you subscribe and follow along. To answer your question: their are two 30 Amp inlets on the transom near the gate to the swim platform. In this video we pulled in Bow first thus we ran the chord alongside. You can option to have the inlets moved from transom to the just outside the pilothouse. Shoot me an email and I'll send you some nice 38E video content we don't post to RU-vid.. I'll enter you into our database so you get that content (email, first/last name). gregmesserle@helmsmantrawlers.com
That is exactly my next video... with the stabilizer installation complete I'm going to do an interior tour first, then engine room tour. Figure a few days away.. Thanks for watching!
Beautiful boat! My parents had a 38E (Mariner Seville) called Navigator from 2009-2019, purchased in Sarasota and home ported in Soutwest Michigan. and the new owner just looped twice and the boat is for sale in Gulf Shores now. You are going to love it they are fantastic trawlers.
Hello ... I know your parent's trawler, Navigator! Small world.. the current owners are great folks I met and follow them on Instagram ... think it's @Helmsman38 if I'm not mistaken. Thanks for the comment, hope all is well.
Love the 38E, we are in the VERY early stages of planning for one. I am sure our paths will cross in the future as we get closer to our dream purchase! Thank you for sharing. I have a couple questions based on your video - Why did you have to travel for the swim platform install? What is the mercury gauge on your dash?
Hi Casey - shoot me an email to: gregmesserle@helmsmantrawlers.com and I can send you an email with some interesting videos on the 38E. Typically the swim platform is installed right at Charleston as part of commissioning but I deferred the requesite haulout to perform that task in lieu of allowing the electronics, dingy and canvas teams to stay aboard and wrap up their important work. This is why we did a tow with the dingy up to the ICW which was quite uneventful. I'm just wrapping up our haulout now and things looks great. Good eye for catching that - I was hoping someone might ask! The Mercury gauge is simply the device that displays the diesel engine specs I choose to monitor while underway such as RPMs, key temp / pressure readings and a range of customizable date sets based upon my preference. In my next video I'm going to do an exhaustive interior walk through.. just need to wrap up the current work. Send me an email and I'll shoot you some interesting videos, etc.. it's fun to dream about this - I know first hand!
Thanks for the comment and I have to tell you after our first day of cruising she is more than I expected.. I have so much to share with everyone... high quality!
Hi I currently live in Charleston for about a year. I'm from St.Marys Georgia so when you stop there eat some shrimp for me..fair winds and following seas.. I'll be sure to follow your journey..
