They got the argument from embarrassment wrong. Something that could embarrass the characters is included, and supports the claim that the text is accurate, because mere propaganda would always make the main character out to be heroic. NOT showing him heroic implies...reality. To her point, it sounds like she hasn't read Ehrman's book that covers that topic

Interesting but teaching evolution (whatever that means) in schools is indistinguishable from teaching religion. It's not science - it's unfalsifiable and based on huge leaps to fill in gaps. It has no credible explanation for the Cambrian explosion, for example. You're just teaching kids one religion over another and pretending it's not.

Henry evokes the dream of discovering an "Aramaic 1st century Thomas source". This is one puzzle in textual criticism: Why does there seem to be such a rejection of the existence of Aramaic texts, preferring instead to believe in the existence of uniquely oral Aramaic traditions? It's true that we have no Aramaic texts today with 1st century origins. But we do have extensive attestation from the apostolic fathers that a "Hebrew Gospel" existed, specifically an original Matthew.

Maybe Thomas just wrote what he himself heard Jesus say, as it says, and there was no oral tradition or copied from anybody.

Try this experiment with your students, say a class of some 15: give an a fairly complex, but very important 20 minute lecture. Then, a month later have each prepare a summary of it. You will undoubtedly find similarities (as each student recalls key points in the same way), differences (as each student interprets key points in their own understanding of them), and also evidences of how some students got together and compared notes (reaching a mini-consensus on certain points that other students chose to gloss over). Hence Mark, via Peter, Matthew, John, and Thomas, who each recalled what Jesus had said years after the fact, as they dictated to bilingual scribes - for the express purpose of evangelization aids in different regions. Gospel scrolls and parchments then got recopied by new generation scribes, with Markian, Johnian, and Thomine traditions flourishing. Apostolic authority

9:00 This is such a cool discussion! - i've been curious about church vestments (largely because i think they look cool) for a bit, particularly their potential origins in the 2nd temple period, I'd love to know more about that topic or see an interview about it. I'm also delighted by the thought of a Disneyland branded Mickey Mouse mitre.

Moses is equated to the age of the bull. His "death" marked the precession of the equinoxes from the bull to the ram. Moses, who is a personification of Aquarius and the rainy month of January, returns every Janus ary. Moses, as Ganymede, was abducted by Zeus and taken to Mt. Olympus. This became Exodus 19.4.

This recently came up among my Facebook friends: Is this correct? : From Naomi Wolf, Ph. D: “Okay, so I was challenged below: "Read the Bible! God gave the land of Israel to the Jewish people." So....I may get crucified for this but I have started to say it -- most recently (terrified, trembling) to warm welcome in a synagogue in LA: Actually if you read Genesis Exodus and Deuteronomy in Hebrew -- as I do -- you see that God did not "give" Israel to the Jews/Israelites. We as Jews are raised with the creed that "God gave us the land of Israel" in Genesis -- and that ethnically 'we are the chosen people." But actually -- and I could not believe my eyes when I saw this, I checked my reading with major scholars and they confirmed it -- actually God's "covenant" in Genesis, Exodus and Deuteronomy with the Jewish people is NOT ABOUT AN ETHNICITY AND NOT ABOUT A CONTRACT. IT IS ABOUT A WAY OF BEHAVING. Again and again in the "covenant" language He never says: "I will give you, ethnic Israelites, the land of Israel." Rather He says something far more radical - far more subversive -- far more Godlike in my view. He says: IF you visit those imprisoned...act mercifully to the widow and the orphan...welcome the stranger in your midst...tend the sick...do justice and love mercy ....and perform various other tasks...THEN YOU WILL BE MY PEOPLE AND THIS LAND WILL BE YOUR LAND. So "my people" is not ethnic -- it is transactional. We are God's people not by birth but by a way of behaving, that is ethical, kind and just. And we STOP being "God's people" when we are not ethical, kind and just. And ANYONE who is ethical, kind and just is, according to God in Genesis, "God's people." And the "contract" to "give" us Israel is conditional -- we can live in God's land IF we are "God's people" in this way -- just, merciful, compassionate. AND -- it never ever says, it is ONLY your land. Even when passages spell out geographical "boundaries" as if God does such a thing, it never says this is exclusively your land. It never says I will give this land JUST to you. Remember these were homeless nomads who had left slavery in Egypt and were wandering around in the desert; at most these passages say, settle here, but they do not say, settle here exclusively. Indeed again and again it talks about welcoming "zarim" -- translated as "strangers" but can also be translated as "people/tribes who are not you" -- in your midst. Blew my mind, hope it blows yours." - Dr. Naomi Wolf

I don’t think anybody would say that. It’s common sense to anyone who knows some history or even just reads the news that laws don’t have to follow morality. A law is effectively just anything that the government decides. Nobody mistakes that for a way to actually make ethical judgments.

Hi. I wonder why you ask that. The great thing about atheism is there is usually no shame. 99% of people are pretty normal, not psychopaths, so most of us follow natural instincts, for which we don't need shame. The only reason most people feel shame is their family or religion puts it on them. You see, when you realize we evolved, that gives us the reason that we naturally fight and want to have sex, and most other behaviors. We realize that to keep people from hurting each other, we don't need shame. We just need to share resources and give people medical and mental care, and have a nice community to give support. I hope that helped you understand that sin and shame have little place in atheism. BTW, if someone is a ruthless rapist/serial killer or something, they would never feel shame, anyway, in any religion, because they have a mental disorder. You can see that religion doesn't stop those types of crazy people, so that's not what I'm talking about. I hope you will ask me if you have other questions. Did that help? I feel like I need to keep goign, but you would get bored. :)

What if all three synoptic gospels are written by the same person? I mean, maybe someone was written the first gospel, he published it, bat after some years, he changed his mind and he decided to re write it, and then he did it again after some time. It could explain a lot things and solve many problems.

This information makes me reflect on the hyper-religious black population in the United States when compared alongside the trauma of continental Africans that are exploited to convert to religion when calamity visits there homes and nations. American history records the plight of the formerly enslaved African in America as; traumatic, exploitative, marginalizing, detrimental and oppressive. In my opinion, this study appears to substance to the secondary religious capture of traumatize African Americans.

Thank you very much for this. I have been waiting for years to find a doctor within the Druze religion, and today I finally found one. I truly resonate with Dr. Radwan. I am a Druze myself, holding a Bachelor's degree in the Science of Religion. I pursued this field out of self-reflection and a curiosity about my heritage and identity. Born in Denmark, I had limited exposure to the Druze community beyond my parents. Losing them a decade ago further distanced me from the religion, making me feel marginalized as an individual, as religion often serves as a pillar of community, belonging, and connection to one's heritage. So, thank you again for this. Is there a way to contact Dr. Radwan?

I know Dr. Wood isn't a behavioral ecologist or an ethologist, but I feel very surprised that, given his interests in psychology and evolutionary biology, that he's not more up to date on the literature regarding non-human communication. Just as a brief example, songbirds are a common study animal for the evolution of language, due to the complexities of their songs, male-female bonding and territory defense duets, and different dialects in different regions within the same species. Not to mention the commonality of mating dances across a variety of taxa, the famous humpback whale "pop songs", referential and multi-modal communication (most commonly in the form of predator alerts and specific vocalizations to refer to specific predators), or trance-like states that chimpanzees will apparently enter in to (either alone or as a group) when approaching certain environmental features (typically a waterfall). As a behavioral ecologist who has spent time in both ethology circles and psychology circles, it's both extremely common and extremely grating to continue hearing about the apparent "specialness" of humans in some aspect or other that "other animals don't do". The reality has been, and likely will continue to be, that the differences between humans and other animals is one of degree and not of kind. Just about everything that has been touted as "purely human", from tool use to laughing when having fun to sex for pleasure, has been found in some degree in other animals. I don't think this is an exception.

Dierdre!! I worked with her back in the day; what an exquisite soul. This is great; love this! John exalts MM - so if Martha was redacted in would be consistent with that Joanine MM bent. I am of the school that believes Mary of Bethany refers to MM. There are many reasons to interpret it this way. Luke also changes the anointing story drastically -- Luke was later than John, so I'd be interested in when the redactions of John to include Martha appear. I concur with this woman entirely, and thrilled by the textual research. John was controversial enough without having the heretical authority, MM, to be so very prominent. Go Elizabeth Schrader!!!

Hears the word of God? This is likely a reference to the ability to hear as "the beginning of the response of Jah (יענה) "john" and i think it reveals something about Mary's relationship with God even before the conception of Jesus.

The best revelation in Josephus is the many dead bodies found in the temple at passover. The timing is perfect to be 41 days after the birth of Christ. Remember that Anna summoned the others. These were the שלג. Interesting, isn't it? I think of them as the 333.

This, again, is a parallel with John: The large fish harken back to why Jesus had a bed of coals prepared for the 153. The 153 vs the slew can be explained by the temple of Dagon and how many men and women were on the first floor vs how many were on the second floor. You must listen with an ear to hear. Begin with THERE were women THERE. And when youve determined the numbers, ask yourself how those numbers on each floor could vary so greatly. I think you will realize why there was a bed of coals. ( this has been an important passage to me for a different reason. The risen king of kings and Lord of Lords was making breakfast for fishermen. I should say had already made the breakfast.)
@nadzach
@nadzach Год назад
John is a Hebrew word that translates as "the beginning of the response of Jah." You can find the root in Proverbs translated as "the beginning of the response." Just add the yowd. All the gospels are titled according to Judaiic tradition. The titles were taken ftom the first words of the text and translated to Hebrew. Mark, Luke and John are obvious. Matthew is more difficult. It is built on את as θεου. מאת, μετθεου. Α beginning from God or with God? This also raises the question of John's description of "In the beginning was the Word and the word was with God," And the possibility that אלוהימ את might also be read אךוהי מאת, In effect, Jesus is the manifestation of God. He is the angel of his presence. Remember when Peter "passed on" through the iron gate and came to his."self?" This ia an ability of the sons of God, as is John outrunning the others to Christ's tomb. The women in prayer who were waiting for Peter expected first to see the angel of his presence. They were not speaking foolishly. They, too, were Sons of God. This knowledge might be beyond your ability right now. This has much to do with eyes to see and ears to hear given as we progress on the way. I think the ability to recognize accurate scripture by words and concepts that agree is a talent of those who have been granted this grace. You are young and beautiful. (Lol,) someday you will have traveled farther on the way of life and these graces come.

When the synoptic gospels are compared in their proper order the variations always show the same progression. Most obvious is the ship in a storm progressing farther across the sea before needing the help ofJesus because their faith has grown. And there is the increase in one's light. At first it is small and ultimately grows to shine out the window to be seen by others. A careful comparison shows this progress in every passage.

Oh, my. I forgot my point. I saw in the originally released Thomas the concept of a woman being made a man. That parallels John. Mary of Bethany was our first example of a female desiring a place with the men at the feet of Jesus. She would face criticism all round. To attain what she is looking for, she must already be a woman of holiness and love. Mary's sister would be burdened by extra work, and some men might question her elevation above even them. In short, Mary was promised a position equal to even Peter.
