I assume this was intended for the Summer Days album, only for garbage like I'm Bugged at My Ol' Man being included instead. Same with Guess I'm Dumb not being included on Today at the expense of Bull Session.
I'd put this in top 7 actually: the lyricism may be pretty poppy BUT if you listen closely you can hear WAY more complex, intricate and beautiful arrangements. It sounds almost like Pet Sounds and multiple songs could fit on that instrumentally. (Then I Kissed Her, Let Him Run Wild, California Girls, Salt Lake City)
I agree, I especially love the two songs they didn't include (Sherry, She Needs Me & Guess I'm Dumb), Brian's songwriting and production was progressing so quickly
I dunno why this album and adilt child are juat constantly playing for me all year I've none stopped listened to these two albums Thry aren't the best but they are just so unique and sort of ahead of the curve
They're very messy and strange, but SO damn charming and fun. It makes me sad that they were basically Brian's last artistic statements with the beach boys (until 2012). After 78, i mostly just stick to Brian's solo work
@@purevycara deffo agree here there's a good fan adult/child online that collects unreleased songs along side adding some MIU tracks and it's wonderful I'll link it below there's a link to download the full album there is pretty good stuff probably my favourite mix of songs
1:08 try G A Dmaj7 Bm / G A D Ddom7 . Also, the G leading into this part is really a Gmaj 7. Try putting your middle finger on the G note of the low E string, ring finger on the D note of the B string, index finger on the Fsharp note of the high E string. It is OK to mute the open A string with the middle finger playing the G on the Low E string. Same with the open D string (though you can let it ring out since it is indeed part of a Gmaj7 chord) Nice singing BTW.
I can just imagine if David Bowie had covered See Emily Play on the Space Oddity album (1969) and not the Pin Ups album ( 1973) it would have sounded like this.
One of Brian's most beautiful compositions, although it is difficult for some male vocalists to reach those notes. Apparently it is inspired by "When You Wish Upon a Star"; Brain was able to write it pretty quickly.
I always find it hard to decide between Surfer Girl and In My Room, as they both appeared on the same album. I could probably never write more beautiful songs in my life; and he was only 21 at that point.
I had a hard time figuring out why "All I Wanna Do" was so beloved by the community. However, I can now enjoy it along with this entire album because of its ability to bring joy and make me feel proud to live in this world. Sunflower brings me that and many other feelings of joy. I can safely say that this is my favorite Beach Boys album. A practically perfect album at least from my perspective.
Definitely the main version from The Smile Sessions; I feel like it combines most of the best parts of the song that were recorded while remaining cohesive and still flowing well. I also LOVE h&v part 1 on the sessions, the mix is more energetic and the 'three score and five' part hypes me up so much. What's your favorite?
LA Light i agree had the potential to be a great album. Here comes the night should have been a stand alone single as it throws the vibe of the album off kilter. As you say, they should have dipped into the vault and included songs like California Feeling or San Miguel. Really enjoy your reviews and look forward to delving into the rest.
