I can't stand when I see or hear Phelan lucky with Phelan -Mcdermid syndrome. This syndrome stole my son from me. I don't sugar coat anything. I love my adult son but he will forever be a baby. I don't understand anything about this disease. He had no developmental delays and hit every milestone on time even said a few words. He has regressed and is profound with this syndrome. I will say he is good natured and is not aggressive at all. I have the constant worry of his fate when I die because all extended "family" has abandoned us. Honestly when someone tells me I'm blessed I want to scream because it is surely a curse in our case. F#@% this syndrome.

My son was diagnosed with F84.0 ASD and I’m learning everything I can to help him. He does a lot of things that kids with Autism don’t do like Laughs when I try and make him laugh, he understands directions, responds to his name he knows his colors and the directions from my house to his moms house which is 20 miles. But he isn’t talking or just says momma and ahhh or unhhuhh like no. I need advice on the best way to help him. And what does F84.0 mean?

It is a very broad code and is not any special category or subtype of autism. We have identified the suspect gene, FAM177A!, but do not yet know the function of the gene but there is a team trying to figure it out using zebra fish! Very interesting and educational, but, do you really think those very small tanks mimic a flowing river? The water in a river is not typically the color of pool water, neither is it empty. I understand you don’t provide then gravel and rocks, plants etc because that is high maintenance for cleaning, but is that fair to the fish? Thousands of lives taken to save potentially the odd 1 or 2 human lives? How do you justify the use of so many lives to research a rare genetic disease in human beings? Thanks. Emily

A nice and enthusiastic overview of Mendel’s work, unfortunately with many historical inaccuracies. For example Mendel never was a student of Nageli, Mendel did not mention Darwin’s name in his Pisum article, etc. Mendel also did not state that that his "elements" were particulate. Only, and more importantly, that they did not blend (but some fluids, like oil and water also do not blend). Mendel did not try to repeat his Pisum results in his Hieracium studies. Mendel considered them to be examples of two different types of hybrids, the first one producing variable offspring, the second producing constant hybrids. Consequently he was not frustrated by his Hieracium findings. By the way Mendel had already started his Hieracium research before he wrote to Naegeli.
