The Black Studies podcast is a Mellon grant sponsored series of conversations examining the history of the field. Hosted by Ashley Newby and John E. Drabinski at University of Maryland, our conversations engage with a wide range of activists and scholars - senior figures in the field, late doctoral students, and everyone in between, culture workers, and political organizers - in order to explore the cultural and political meaning of Black Studies as an area of inquiry and its critical methods.

11:38 this is the problem with African American/black studies. It’s too broad with no real meaning. Black Americans should not be bunch up with Africans and melanated people it’s racist and ignorant. It also creates confusion amongst the youth creating ethnic confusion and insecurity.

As someone who went back to school in my 40's and earned my BA in Africana Studies and my Th.M in Black Theology at 58. I went to a public State University for my Undergrad and my Masters from a HBCU. I learned theory and practice that was always centered in the Black community.

Im considering several non degree African American study classes to audit these classes to see what’s really being taught.

I appreciate this podcast and this guest, esp the tall of language being at the root. A couple questions I have as a 2nd yr undergrad majoring in black studies but currently at a community College : 1. Can you bring on guests to talk about black studies at the community college level, not just at the university level? 2. Imuoir episode with Dr CBS, she mentioned the dirth of black studies programs that have a strong focus on political economy. I would like to get a ph. D. How do I compare programs? And how important should my consideration be of faculty possessing a degree in black studies or not? I would like to get a degree from folks who got their degree in it.. Apologies if this is the wrong place to be asking these questions. I'm literally the only student in yhe black studies program at my school so I don't really know who to ask

Very nice podcast. This is a great idea. But I am a bit confused about the differences between Black Studies, African-American Studies, and Africana Studies at universities in the US. I live in Rhode Island and am somewhat familiar with the Africana Studies Department at Brown University. This department has gone through several name changes since the 1980s. I don’t think it was ever named Black Studies. The current incarnation seems to be very much focused on Africa and the Caribbean with very little emphasis on Black Americans. Could someone please respond to this comment. Thanks.

Africana is supposed to mean all african people. African American is basically the last 400 years. African American and African studies depends bt at Mt school it's kinda 2 Separate dept, one African, one African American. And then black studies...good question. But names, regionally, the east coast tends to be named africana and have connections to carribbean due to geography, but brown is of special note, it's very tied to the university of West indies and they got Paget Henry over there. In the west coast, ethnic studies (asain/latinx/native/Black Studies) has more of a history and sonblack studies is one of the ethnic studies variants.

It’s because black American culture is being culturally genocided by “blackness” and immigrants are coming into the universities just discovering blackness and redefining it, because they aren’t black in their countries because they don’t have to be because they are majority black. African American connection is America and America only. Immigrants have hijacked blackness.

Yall should get "Lil Bill" the youtuber or F.D signifier on here. They are giants in the youtube community talking on "black stuff"(as a guest called it the other day.) I think it would make great conversations and would help provide better outreach towards the youth and laymen

@@wisdometernallifethroughveins Not everything is for mass appeal. At some point, the ones who seek true knowledge will look hard enough and find it. Nobody needs to spoon feed people info. If you are oppressed enough and serious about Liberation, you will find the correct info. But it will not be served up on a platter with fancy graphics and watered down language. Even when you look back in old times, certain info wasn't for everyone. Now, it is YOUR job to share this info and synthesize it to the masses. Your idea, your responsibility.

Yall should add a question asking about the progression of Black Liberation rather than just Black studies. I have noticed through listening to all these figures in the field that much of the work being done is amazing but doesn't feel as though its leading us toward the true liberation we seek.

All these scholars really need to be reevaluated. This generic blackness is not a real thing. It’s an about culture and ethnicity. I find immigrants are the main group muddying and confusing “blackness”. Clearly put…. Blackness is uniquely American, because we are an ethnic group. FOUNDATIONAL BLACK AMERICANS. This professor is Jamaican not black, although she grew up in Black Culture
@wisdometernallifethroughveins
@wisdometernallifethroughveins 11 дней назад
Blackness is not uniquely American, race occurs throughout every single Pan-African country because it was instilled on them. Malcom X wouldn't have called upon his "Black brothers" from Africa, the middle east, and the Carribean in his speeches if they weren't. Is Malcom not black because he was Jamaican? Blackness is a common culture shown throughout the world because the white Oligarchies from Europe and Americas oppressed all people of African descent. The chains of blackness placed upon our enslaved Ancestors are the same chains that link us together today

@@wisdometernallifethroughveins that’s a moot point. In these countries the “black people” group themselves into warring tribes and distinguished identities. In America however black is an ethnic group of people. That’s unique in its own. In Jamaica and nigeria being “black” means nothing until they come to America. PS. Malcolm father was a black American.
