Because of the NHLPA as it is today and their agreements, it's highly unlikely something like this happens today. We've seen players, typically not 1st rounders, but players refuse to play for teams before or demand trades, but nothing theatrical or public or as juvenile as this. Everything is done behind closed doors. Adam Fox didn't want to play for Calgary or Carolina, before agreeing to play for the Rangers. And even though Fox was drafted 66th overall, if he'd been a 1st rounder, I think he probably would have put on the jersey and then asked for a trade after the fact. It's never a good look when a player publicly says they won't play for a team and then won't put on the jersey at the draft. No matter how good you are, teams will be reluctant to pick you up. The closest situation I can think of is maybe Pierre-Luc Dubois, but he didn't do anything at the draft. He's just asked for a trade from 2 separate hockey clubs and then underperformed. Lindros was the opposite. He publicly refused to play for Quebec (screwing himself long term) but when he did get to the NHL, he was a force, if often injured. I also remember as a Canucks fan facing Pat Falloon and the Sharks. Everyone kept thinking Pat would break through and be a star, but it never happened, even though I can remember the Sharks routinely taking 2-0 leads in the early 90s on the Canucks before they'd storm back. Vancouver was known for their slow starts back them. What else is new?
I know he’s a pretty controversial figure in the world of hockey, and I certainly don’t agree with all his takes/opinions…but this man’s contributions to the game are immeasurable. His presence on Hockey Night in Canada was a staple across the country for decades and i believe it was one of the highest rated segments on TV in Canada. He’s a Jack Adams Award winner, and his Rock em Sock em videos were watched by countless people, especially kids who just couldn’t get enough of the game. IMO, he should absolutely be in the Hockey Hall of Fame!
Wayne is a great hockey player but a better smokes man for the game. He represents educational experience and and experience from his experience and knowledge worldwide. And they didn't let him shoot in 98 God Bless us all
The Russians won the series 5-2-1, yet Canadian journalists wrote stories that read, "At least they didn't beat the Flyers and Canadiens. So, the five wins don't really matter." What a bunch of sour grapes. The Russians whipped NHL ass. Go, USSR!!
The Canadians were a little dirty, and I'm glad the U.S. Team were up for the nonsense. For Lindros to say that his Slash on Tkachuck's neck was "probably a bad call" shows why he was the underachiever he turned out to be. Clown.
ah phil, stuck in the "red menace" era of american thinking, tretiak was one of if not the greatest goalie, phils sour because hating russians is all his generation can do anymore
You know i was at that draft in 1990, and i don't remember Nedved's pick being so popular. I guess you could call it a cautious cheer. Although Peter would turn out to be a pretty good player in the NHL, it would be with other franchises than the Canucks. You're right though Chris, It is pretty amazing at how often they came up dry, not only on draft day, but on all their picks, year after year. Even if they got a good player, it would seem like they would trade him away instead. (Rick Vaive: Cam Neely etc.) And of course, famously, or infamously, the Canucks have never had the pleasure of drafting first. A fact all Oiler fans wish would go away!
Why? He was always better with the Penguins and was over a point per game player through 1998-2003, and with Sullivan still running the show there, he just might get his wish. I hear they're desperately looking for a AARP member to replace Carter. They have plenty of old players who won't get off the ice already. What's one more?
Wow!! Man, you post some of the best videos, I can't get enough of the random old Canadian hockey stuff WITH THE COMMERCIALS!! It brings me right back. Can't thank you enough, please keep em coming!!🍻
Wow...Russ Courtnall, Mogilny, Bure speed to burn!...such a shame they only played 15 games together that season. Russ and Pavel were incredible during the 1995 playoffs.
Why is this age-restricted when not signed in? It doesn’t very violent, and I say this as a Red Wings fan who remembers their successes in the late 1990s.
Its wild that Boston's Andy Moog & Rejean Lemelin won the Jennings trophy when both had Save Percentages of only a bit better than 89% (.890+). Nowadays you dont even get a sniff of this trophy if your SvP% is under .910
No the 1980 supposed miracle in ice was a protest by Russian players against their coach. The biggest upset was the 72 Russia Canada series as it was freedom.vs communism. Before things actually opened up. It looked good on tv but behind the scene it was Russians against the KGB coach tikonov
