Their are multiple GOATS and Bird and Jordan are among the top of all-time. And everyone that follows basketball - for real - knows it, and even Mike knows it 0-6.
You never saw anyone from Larry’s era out there getting cute and dancing around like Curry does. Know why ? They were expected to make those shots and to act like they had done it before. Sorry for my rant, but that just gets on my nerves.
You are doing fine. The set up is fine and I enjoy watching you. Love, Love Bird. Even though Bird didn't get the championship MVP, don't really think he minded it very much? He got what he was working for and didn't mind sharing the glory, which is one of the reasons I enjoy watching him.
In the video special about the Dream Team, they said that Chuck Daly had coached/directed the teams so that the college team would show up the pros. He did it because he had noticed that the pros had been trying to vie with each other, trying show how good they were, rather than playing like a team. By making them lose, it woke them up and changed their attitudes.
I inow this an old post, but I still felt the need to comment about something that many viewers and b-ball fans may not be aware of and could surprise you. In an interview that LeBron was asked who the top 3 players in NBA history are n his opinion. Larry Legend was on his list. Much respect to LeBron for his knowledge that includes the eras long before him, and the recognition and respect that he has for the truly greats of the league. And for the haters from younger generations, I suggest you go find videos of Bird and then you'll have an understanding for the way in which Hall of Fame players hold him with such high regard.
Bill Russell was always so stingy with compliments that when he complimented you, it was like God leaving you a message on your voice mail. Or getting a letter from Heaven. And you better save that stamp on the envelope.
I love Bird but if I want.to win I take Bill Russell over ANYONE. THE FACT THAT HE NEVER LOST A GAME 7, HAS 11 TITLES AND ON AND ON AND ON. WHY? BEATS THE HELL OUT OF ME. RUSSELL WAS RIDICULOUSLY GOOD, AND GOOD IN WAYS THAT YOU CAN'T SEE. HE ONLY had a genius coach and teammates who used the CELTICS AS A PIT STOP ON THE ROAD TO SPRINGFIELD'S HOF. HAVE YOU DONE RUSSELL YET? NO? ENJOY HELL.
One more very important argument to choose Bird over Lebron in a draft. If you take Lebron, 4 years later he will have left to go into another team to get a superteam. Bird will stay with you for his entire career.
Larry said, more or less, "you have to stand for yourself or they look at you differently". He was raised with brothers whom he might fight with, but also whom he would fight for. He sounds to me like a friend who would back you up. He is definitely not perfect, but who is. On the Tonight show with Johnny Carson, he and Magic came on (years after they retired) and Dave asked Larry who was the best. Larry said, that since Earvin had more rings, then he was the best. Earvin was asked the same question and said that he has always said that Larry was the better player. They finally agreed that Magic was the best Point Guard and Larry was the best Small Forward. They are really funny together.
Jordan politically reminds me of Wilt Chamberlain. MJ said Republicans buy bball shoes, too. He was out to offend no one. And all his greatness seems centered on Michael Jordan. I dont know....maybe it is because Magic and Bird played on established great teams with great histories. Maybe it is the number of assists. Wilt didnt offend anyone in the sixties. Russell sided openly with Ali during the draft resistance thing. Russell spoke out about civil rights and marched with Civil Rights Workers. And Jewish Red Auerbach encouraged him to do so. He actually encouraged all the Celtics to do that. ... Then he would sneak off and call in a bomb threat to the hotel where the opposing team was staying. Or wait until 2 a.m. and pay someone to set off the fire alarm in that hotel.
Red Auerbach deserves a badass video. Coach? GM? Inventor of the modern NBA? ULTIMATE DIRTY COACH/GM? YES. Yes. All of those. 1. Red Auerbach called in bomb threats to hotels of opposing teams. They say. 2. Red Auerbach tripped fire alarms of hotels of opposing teams. 3. On the road, if the Celtics were up 5with three minutes left Red would light up a victory cigar. It would enrage EVERYBODY. On the road, people would come to hate on Red. Other teams would get fired up because of that victory cigar. They would go into overdrive. Talent scout? Greatest ever. Took a chance on a skinny center who really couldn't score but could block, rebound, steal, jump, jump QUICK, and run. And Cousy taught him how to handle the ball. Tommy Heineken taught him a little jump hook. Took a chance on Bird, who only looked weak to everyone else. Took a chance on McHale, another weird looking big man. Invented the 6th man. Fast break. The extra pass that got everyone involved. Invented a "share the wealth" mentality. Civil rights? Celtics first to draft a black guy, Chuck Cooper. Who had to do a stint in the Army after being drafted by Boston. Red first to start 5 black players...then bring in HAVLICEK as the 6th man. Boston had the first black pro team coach in Bill Russell, player-coach 67 68 69. Boston Celtics did everything right but still had the rep as a white team Because of the CITY of Boston and the racial unrest because of busing.. So the Celtics had to pay for the sins of the city. Even though they were the first in every category of promoting blacks. And Jewish Red Auerbach who once punched Moses Malone. Red punched Moses Malone. During an exhibition brawl with the Sixers. Sportswriters call Red the only genius in teamsports.
You’re right. Too much attention is put toward offensive players but offense is only half of the game and the player. I love the defense as much or more myself. That is one of the many reasons Bird is the BEST ALL AROUND PLAYER IN NBA HISTORY
Even in the one game where he did not hit the 3 pointer to win the game, didn't he tell the Pat Riley, Lakers' coach "I can't believe you left me open like that, Riley. You lucked out". Maybe if they had guarded him better, he would have hit it.
I think Larry Bird's attributes include his willingness to work at his skill, the way he thinks, his will power, killer instinct and what makes him so fun, his humor. Enjoyed this.
3:57 MJ was ready to win a championship right from the start. He just didn'T have enough help. Larry had enough help. That argument really doesn't apply to MJ.
Larry Bird is the GOAT of the SF #3 position. He WILLED his team to rise to his level... in a 2 year span, they lost 3 games at home, not including playoffs... 3 Home games in 2 years ......They won the Finals and lost one in that 2 year span
There was a show out for a while, probably a decade or more ago, where people could challenge the bench players of pro sports teams. The #11 guy for the Celtics came out to a street ball venue and took the best challengers on. It wasn't even close. The bench guy for the Celtics cleaned house.
