It's not just poverty. I'd say it has much more to do with people feeling a lack of control over their own life. Poverty causes that feeling but lots of places have high poverty and don't have the homicide rates. Like if it was just guns Texas would have many times more shootings then Illinois.(instead of visa versa on a per capita level) If it was just poverty then West Virginia and New Mexico would have higher levels. It's much more to do with feeling a lack of control and like your life is up to someone else. I think welfare, renting, not having transport like a car, lots of stuff involved in city living while poor makes people feel insecure about their life. Like a poverty person in WV probably owns a 20 thousand dollar house and a 300 car, and a crappy job that pays 9 dollars an hour. The big city poverty person and the WV poverty person are both at the same economic level but the WV person has control over how much he spends on housing and transport and can get different jobs. Same money but a free man.
