What amazes me is that whoever produced/directed this would have taken a lot of time to get all those shots, figure out sequencing, editing, etc. How do you earnestly put that much time and energy into a project and have it turn out like this?
These snowflakes believe they achieved something with elimination of these traditions, 100% of the collegiate ones are done in reverence. I guarantee you that if you brought the elders from the various tribes together they'd laugh at these snowflakes and say this is what you're worried about? After all that has happened to our traditions, livelihood, ecosystem, etc? The use of these symbols is one of the only things they've done in true reverence for the culture. Just a complete joke. They should have doubled down and used the imagery as a teaching tool for the culture as a whole.
NCAA basically said that the Chief needed to go, otherwise UofI wouldn't be eligible to host certain events. It's a very controversial decision, sure, but there's basically nobody online who has the whole story straight, so it's useless to say it's "only" wrong or right. It's a bit of both, more likely. What we do know is that there were multiple occasions in which the Chief was a racist and misrepresentative symbol. It's just a fact of the matter, and isn't up for debate. Having people who are not Native American and/or have not taken the time to understand Native American culture should not take on the role of a Native American Chief, regardless of the separate University traditions that people remember the Chief for. Outside of that, my own personal opinion is the fact that people still yell "CHIEF!" during halftime performances and openly criticize the decision to remove the symbol only shows that most people have not taken the time to look into why the symbol was taken away. Yes, it sucks that it was done so without asking students, and it's very disappointing that such a powerful symbol was lost. However, people need to understand that the cost of certain traditions was the cultural appropriation and harmful perpetuation of racial stereotypes of Native American people. Not good.
The 2 percent that opposed the Chief had the NCAA, the University board, president and professors on their side, and overrode the majority. Many younger students were brainwashed to believe their venom. That’s the truth.
Realistically, it was a financial decision made by the University that stemmed from an NCAA ultimatum. Either the Chief goes, or UofI can't host certain tournaments/sporting events, meaning less revenue for the University. However, you should also *really* look into the history of the Chief, especially in the last years leading up to the retirement of the Chief. Most importantly, consider this: The only remaining federally-recognized tribe of the Illini Confederation is the Peoria Tribes of Indians of Oklahoma. Though they did voice support for the Chief at one point in time, they DO NOT currently support the image and DID NOT when the Chief was retired. Anyone who says otherwise is simply incorrect, as you can cite the Peoria Tribes directly on this subject.
I sent this to a friend, after watching one of the games recently. As much as I hated the bears, at least the Superbowl Shuffle was cool. This monstrosity, no. My friend was on the floor dying of laughter!
I was in the Michigan Marching Band in 1967 and was fortunate to see the Chief perform at our one away game at Illinois. I loved the tradition and the performance.
Back in the old days, a thief would get shot in the back and everybody would cheer. Now? We give the red carpet treatment to thieves and hold the door open for them after they loot the stores.
I mean, the Peoria Tribes of Indians of Oklahoma (the ONLY remaining federally-recognized tribe of the Illini Confederation) have expressed multiple times now that the image of the Chief was NOT representative of Native American culture. They have reiterated multiple times now, even after the Chief has been gone for many years, that they DO NOT support the image of the Chief.
