Mariam Jones showed that she was a sensation and world class athlete while at Thousand Oaks HS. I was a youth football coach there and would watch Mariam compete - often thinking what is she doing at TOHS. Then to see Jones move on to NC and win a NCAA Women’s Basketball Nat’l Championship for the Tar Hills along with her Track & Field Championships was thrilling. But to witness Mariam Jones rise to become not only an Olympian, but a Gold medalist was phenomenal. Words alone cannot describe how crushed and disappointed I was about Jones’ use of performance enhancing drugs and to see her stripped of her Olympic Medals - It was numbing. In the end though, it was exciting to watch Mariam Jones compete and Win - and we now that was with her natural abilities. Let’s not forget that.
