Oliver North Iran contra hearings, took place in February 1989. Powells Ban this came out in 1989 as well but the footage was from 88. Frankie Hill said he likes to throw down the big fat ollie one foot. So it was called a One footer by the people doing them before the Oliver North trial. That’s what we called them. Nerds that started skateboarding after 1989 started calling them the Ollie North, because of a military guy on trial. It sounded dumb to me 35 years ago, and it still does. It’s a ONE FOOTER. And I’m proud to be a skate nerd.
I would say a 1 footed olli is a no comply without a foot plant. Olli north is a olli with extending the front leg over the nose, olli south is extending the back foot over the tail to the back. North: up, south: down. With a 1 footed olli the front foot just needs to go out of the way like with an no comply, but it dows not drag the board. With an olli north the front foot levels the board befor going north. How can be using two foots right at the beginning of the trick be "1 foot". My math is bad but I count two ;-)
i live in Canada and we always called it an ollie one foot. Some guys came up from the southern US one time and it was the first time I ever heard it be called an ollie north, but we never switched to that terminology.
There was an old prophecy that actually stated.. “when you see a group of skaters trying to work out a trick called an “Ollie-north drop in”, we can all rest assured that every possible maneuver/trick that’s possible on a skateboard, has now been invented.
I've never heard of a one footed ollie. It's always been an ollie north. You can call it whatever you like, but, I'm going to look at you weird if you refer to it as a one footed ollie and probably ask, do you mean an ollie north?
I started in 87 and I remember the thrasher comic about olliver north and of course the trials on tv. I tend to think the ollie north is how kickflips were invented, like someone accidently did a kickflip while doing a ollie north. Its the same motion, the one footed ollie is also a great precursor to kickflips.
Ask those kids what a No-comply is......i bet they don't know and will claim what is being done today (uncomply)😂..is a No-comply......also due to the chumping down of Sk8 in the early and mid 90s....
😮Mixed messages here.... The term Ollie North came way later , the trick was being done long before that and was known as a one-footed Ollie ....not until the chumping down of Sk8 to the speed of walking in the early and mid 90s did any terms or names of tricks get messed up , confused or just plain wrong.....😮
I grew up skating this era, never heard anyone name the trick Ron Allen did but the Hensley version was definitely called an Ollie North. Only thing my friends and I ever called it from '89 on.
How it got the bastardized name of OLLIE NORTH I’ll never know. I do not see how the military got into this but it’s always been a ONE FOOTED OLLIE. Oliver North should have zero to do with this because as we all know skateboarders are such up to date news junkies. I feel that it’s always been a 1 footed Ollie . I’ve skated all through the 80,$ , 90, 2000,$ and until now. I feel I have some weight in this convo and I just wish GROSSO & PHELPS were here to weigh in on this 😂 Thanks for listening to the rantings of an OG . (Old GUY ) there’s nothing gangster about being 51 😂 Sincerely OG MIKE /LES NYC currently living and repping the skate Mecca of the ATL GWINNETTE area. Come see all the parks they are amazing. Also come support DUNCAN SKATE SHOP run by an extremely rad dude James M & his wonderful family. Skater owned and operated. A true OG in the skate world.
how is it a one footer if you're actually using both feet?? skate and have fun is cool, but it's not cool to be disrespecting the pioneers by changing all the names.. not just the ollie north, but it;s so hard to even watch any competitions anymore because over half the tricks are being called wrong
😂😂😂... After the chumping down of Sk8.... And the flooding inundation of non-sk8rs riding at the speed I walk.... Little wheel gimmick I never fell for 😂😂😂...and now the damn Olympics 😂??? How much more gimmick garbage is sk8 going to go through 😢....for fks sake it's slow as hell and borderline hopscotch as it is 😮
I think Ed Templeton needs a mention. He did them and did them well. When he won world champs in munster Germany in 90 was a big deal. Usually vert guys would place in street comps, which they did in 90. But Ed won. He probably did a one foot lol. Here's a slight variation on theme. Nose bonks came about from the one foot technique, where u kick nose down to bonk it. But the other way was to basically do a short nose wheelie.
While Ed Templeton was the biggest street skater of 1990, ollie norths were pretty done for by the time Useless Wooden Toys came out. If anything Templeton doesnt get credit for his chops in street skating in general, he is more known for impossibles as he pretty much brought them into street skating.
One-footed ollie may be the original but Ollie North is shorter, allows for more variation (ollie south), and describes the visual better. An ollie followed by a kick off the north end of your board. Personally, one-footed ollie sounds more like a no-comply, which may be why one reason people stopped calling it that.
