Or catch your own outboard propellors, while setting them, when wind drifts you over the line. I don't use a floating line - just leaded crab line. I work a purse seine float into the trap bridle and rig the bridle with lines to each corner.
Fun day out of Garibaldi/Tillamook Oregon bottom fishing for Rockfish & Lingcod plus a bonus of crab out of Tillamook Bay. A mix of effective riggings - mooching rigs, shrimp flies & jigs. i can't see why this wouldn't work. makes good sense. did you complete the mod? i use the orca rod holder on the nylon extension on the rigger boom. i like it a lot but do worry about the overall strength at times. i'm making a leash to attach to the rod to address at this point.
Yes. And I've used it for over a year without an issue. I did move to a different rod holder because of using electric reels for offshore use and these Scotty's did not allow good clearance for the power cable on the Tanacoms. I'm am now using the Strikers series for that clearance which already has the stainless pin in the socket.

Halibut! Best tasting and textured fish in the ocean and what a blast to catch. We used to fish them out at the Bandon high spot. It used to take a fast boat a good hour and a half to get out from Bandon in a little longer from Charleston. You'd be traveling over 1,000 ft deep waters and then it would rise up to about 475 to 550. Of course the season was only a couple or three days long usually twice a year, it was worth the time and fuel getting out there if you could get your bait on the bottom. Most of the time the currents were real strong, there was strong wind... basically pretty snotty. But if you could get your bait on the bottom you would get a bite within seconds. Sometimes you had to drive downhill while letting your line out just to find the bottom. That would give you a couple of minutes of good fishing. It wasn't unusual to take home something over 100 lb. There were plenty of chicken halibut but we would usually go at home with something that was 50 or 60 lb and sometimes bigger. The last time I went out was in around 1997. The hour and a half triple and took about 45 minutes because I had a 23 ft Sea Ray with a 454, power steering and trim tabs. It would usually do 55 on the ocean. We got out there, caught big fish right off the bat and got back to the boards before 9:00 a.m. It was one for the books.
@@schiedler1978 The challenge is, many of the services are pulling from the same satellites, so they are dependent on the same clear sky for a good shot. The last few weeks we have had too much cloud cover to get a clear shot. In the past, I have used NANOOS since it was free. Using SatFish now as it has better tools and the HiDef Sat shots give you potentially a better shot by using multiple feeds from the same day.
Skipper, you handled that day very well. Personally I don’t know how these people are associated with you. But the one guy seemed drunk and difficult. Still looked like everyone had a great trip. I could feel your frustration and you handled the day well. I hope your fish finder screen survived. 🏆✌️ Do you do charger fishing or are these guys all family/friends you’re fishing with in the videos?
That looks like so much fun. And yum! 👀 I’ve wanted to go out on a charter for about the last 4 or 5 years since learning about this being a thing off our coast. My grandfather used to take me salmon fishing out in the mouth of the Columbia. 😊 I’m a poor man though so I live through videos like these and your experiences. Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed it. 🏆✌️
Normally, I have those spinning rods ear marked for jigging/casting with swimbait; but they were handy and casted out on this trip while trolling with swimbait. Remember, these are small Albacore here in Oregon/Washington...20 pound range. For bigger fish...yep, Conventional Lever Drag reel is the way to go. We just don't really have those up here. But on a bright note...since they are younger/smaller fish - they also have less mercury 🙂
Thanks for posting this. Do you have any tips if I can’t get this knot to stop slipping under pressure? The loop just gets smaller until it pulls through
Are you putting tension on the loop when you try to lock it in place? Put the loop on a nail, around a knob or something to put tension on it when you try to lock it into place. I have seen some small diameter mono difficult to lock into place. What you can try doing for those scenarios is to add another plait to the knot (i.e. take the loop through another time.
@@AFaO thanks, appreciate you taking the time to answer. I think the fault lies in this slippery co-polymer line I’ve got, it won’t even hold a clinch knot.
Here is a link for this specific model. amzn.to/3WCsQKc I would suggest doing a serial number lookup to make sure that this full kit covers your particular model. This kit does cover many years of BFP8 & BFP9.9 models...but I would suggest you look up the serial number to be 100% certain...unless you already know the full model number & revision, you can see that in the kit compatibility list.
Your pipe jigs certainly worked well for you. Thanks again for the good information you give. We went out yesterday, and using several of your suggestions, caught our limit of rockfish and one nice ling. It was our first bottom fishing. I hope you keep up the good videos and wish the best to you and your family.
Thank you for the kind words. Great to hear you had good success yesterday. And yesterday was a nice day to be on the ocean off the Oregon coast. Its was a flat ocean - I was out fishing yesterday too 🙂 Happy that the videos are helpful. I'm trying to figure out what additional content would be helpful. If you have any ideas, please let me know. Take care.
Thanks for posting this video. Looks like you had a good day. Your indo about the bar crossing was very helpful. It would be great to hear some details of what you used, water depth, location tips etc. I know you give more details in other videos, but to have the information specific to the day would be nice. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the feedback and thank you for watching. Yes, on my more recent videos I have been trying to give more details. Any more suggestions on content or things you'd like to see, please let me know. Thanks!
Thanks. But one of the joys I have is studying all the charts and the bathymetric charts and circling spots that I need to explore. Pretty much every spot I've got on my list of places to go are ones I explored and found myself. Yes, we all can go down to 3 Arches if out of LI or Johnson Rock if out of Newport, etc or go where someone gives you the 'numbers'. But its is satisfying when you study the charts and data and get a game plan and go explore. You'll find lots of spots that no one else is fishing. But if you share it on RU-vid or via social media, you might be surprised to see a 100 of your close friends hanging out there the next time and you get muscled out of the spot you found 😀
@@AFaO Oh no I never exchange in public chat XD There is indeed so much joy in finding your own private spots. But I always help my friends out cause they return the favor haha. Love the content! You got a sub :)
Excellent video with helpful advice. I'm going to try this soon and will give your Kiwi loops a try. It's a big ocean off of Tillamook...where would you suggest a person start looking for the rockfish? Thanks.
@@rodtalley1532 Well, many of the folks starting out go down to 3 Arches. Its a long reef with plenty of area to explore. I would suggest subscribing to one of the Charting Apps like Navionics, C-Maps or TZ iboat - as they will show the shaded relief maps with good detail. It will be obvious when looking at the chart with Shaded Relief enabled, where all the structure is at. Its sounds from your post that you may not have go out of that port before. I would caution anyone if they have not experienced crossing this bar to either go out with an experienced captain who has navigated this bar or to take a guided trip to learn from an experienced captain. This bar can be VERY dangerous and has deteriorated because of sediment that has filled in the middle grounds and the south jetty has been severely damaged from storms. Ebb can be very dangerous. Going through the South and the middle grounds can be VERY dangerous and is NOT recommended. The only route out is through the North Hole marked with a buoy that has moved as an entrance buoy. Cutting the North Jetty too close, you can hit rocks as it is partially submerged for at least 100 yards past the visible jetty at low tide. Expect the Coast Guard to have bar restrictions with any swell of 5' or greater on this bar. Be very cautious. We've already had casualties on our coast this year from bar crossings. And for details on this bar, you can consult the OSMB flier. www.oregon.gov/osmb/forms-library/Documents/Publications/TillamookBar.pdf Have fun out there and be safe!
Very cool to see as a BC resident. Rock fish are protected here and can't be caught by residents... But commercial boats can by catch as much as they want.... Go figures. As a free diver I spear fish and I see plentiful rock fish but not allowed to touch em. Just absorb their presence
We have a few species we can not keep - like Yellow Eye and Quillback which we have to decend safely to reduce impact. The rockfish are managed and we have adjustments sometimes in season to reduce impacts. We are down to a bag limit of 5 fish per day. I remember when it use to be 10 🙁
I would suggest looking at the chart and go due west of Twin Rocks and see where it hits 400 to 420'. That would give you the distance and general area.
Unfortunately, AT5 is a proprietary binary format. Lowrance provides the tool to convert to AT5...but its a one way street. Once its converted to AT5, I am not aware of any tools available to parse and convert to another format.
