Late last year, I started a little collection on my shelf consisting only of physical discs of my absolute favorite movies. About a year later, and now I have on my shelf almost every single movie I consider to be 10/10. I have two Criterion Collection movies on this shelf, Wall•E and Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, mostly just because I was going to get those movies anyway and I liked the box art for this release. Also because it's the only way to get a physical copy of Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio. That's my only experience with the Criterion Collection. I didn't even know it existed until earlier this year.
I also recently saw that The Shape of Water will be added to the collection later this year. Even though I already have a 4k disc of it in my collection on the shelf, I'm tempted to get it anyway just because I love the box art.
Brilliant. I love Tati and so agree about cheap “ one-liners”. Have I gone we to a modern comedy lately? Give me Tati any day. Thanks for your insights.
I have to admit I always thought fan edits were pretty lame... until I watched a good one. Then my mind was blown at the talent. Kinda like those "mashup" songs Umphrey's McGee does on Zonkey. When you first hear about them... sounds gross. But was actually pretty mind-blowing how good it was! Watching a fan edit of David Lynch's Fire Walk with Me with "The Missing Tapes" cut in, with some artistic license so that it all was seemless. It was better than the original!!! And setup The Return even better too! Wasn't long before I was down the rabbit hole on Hobbit and Star Wars cuts 🤣 it's definitely pretty cheesy to try and re-cut a movie I admit. But I'm amazed how fun I'm finding this mini-hobby!
I just bought my first criterion blue rays. Network and Videodrome (Also had to buy a blu ray player with it). But god it feels so great to buy something that falls with in your interests and has been made with actual care and knowledge. You just get to see the best movies in the (second) best way.
Mostly hype imo but overall solid releases and yet it blows my mind that their subscription streaming service is well over 100 a month… For a company that prides itself on restoration and releasing physical copies, I’d think that charging your soul for streaming quality is like a slap in the face and them telling you that they did it because they can as opposed to an well thought out explanation.
Just found out about criterion just to find out the dvds are literally reign locked? So there’s only a limited amount that I could buy and watch as an Australian 😢
I watched so many superhero movies before watching Watchmen, and for me I understood its critiques and saw it as a more philosophical art piece of a movie that dissected vigilantes and how their own moral views would distort the world around them. For me I thought it was great, and then upon looking at RU-vid videos the sentiment was that it wasn't good at all. I find this with other Snyder work like Justice League's 4 hour Snyder Cut. To me, as a director, Snyder gets way too much undeserved hate. Compare it to what Marvel's doing, and to me it comes across as super unique and interesting, rather than an over-saturated kids movies filled with one liners and over-done monologues. To me his superhero movies bring a certain realism to the topic of superheroes in general, and I find the fact that people can praise The Boys and Invincible for doing this very thing, but completely ignore or hate Snyder's work to be hypocritical. Obviously those two works are way more satirical and take themselves less seriously, but I still find it to be jarring that brutal realism of characters and moments is seen as bad in a world of comic book adaptions that are nothing like their source material, completely race/sex change the characters, and purposefully make them overdone and marketable... Most Marvel films are above average at best and completely over-hyped. The Boys is overly political and too satirical to take seriously, despite being very good. Invincible leans too much into Cartoon Network dialogue and voice acting for me to take its "adult themes" seriously. Watchmen is the perfect blend of these two extremes imo, and one of the best superhero movies of all time, next to The Joker, The Dark Knight, Snyder's Cut Justice League, Iron Man 1, and the original Spider-Man trilogy.
I also find it funny that Iron Man 1, despite being a good movie, has one of the lamest most overused villain tropes (a villain that mimics what the hero is, but without the good), and yet people would find it better than the Watchmen.
I remember when this movie came out, I couldn't wait to see it and wasn't disappointed. But I have to admit, I generally prefer old Golden Age movies over the newer stuff. I'm surprised that this movie didn't fare better at the box office.
This video was so good idk how but on the part you talked about corruption it made me cry idk how but you touched me the thought of something so beautiful can be corrupted into a nightmare
