LOL you can tell this is the part of the beach where the wrestling competitors and spectators chill because of the unrealistically disproportionate number of people who are actually in shape on a modern American beach!

The Rock Pile was named 'Rock Pile' back in 1970 by me after reading an article about the Rock Pile break in Hawaii. I remember setting down the magazine and then going out on our deck to check the waves. Our home was overlooking the lake two houses north of Harbor and Grand Ave. It was really small, maybe a foot and a half and could barely see some white water breaking near the south pier. I was so stoked from reading the surf magazine and wave hungry that I thought I would the distance to see about surfing those waves. I figured the waves there would be a bit bigger and stronger because of the rebounds off the pier merging with the waves coming in. There were some peaks there that were about 2+ ft and so I waded and paddled out for a go. The south pier surf area was a bit different than it is now. There were a lot of rocks that extended out from the pier base in little clumps. I found one of these clumps or pile of rocks where a peak was forming up and rode that! As I surfed it I remembered the Rock Pile article I had just read and decided to call this little spot 'The Rock Pile' and I continued to come back and surf it on small days. Repetition being the mother of learning I always had a way of making nicknames of people, surf breaks and whatever stick. One of the great features of the Rockpile is that I could park my VW van right there at the break which was great for taking a rest or warming back up. We would often gather in the vehicle with the beat heater to rest; warm up; listen to tunes on the the taped deck; smoke a doober and talk! That was my opportunity to continuously refer to the place as 'The Rock Pile' and Steve White as 'Whitey or Bob Pushaw as 'The Mayor' (his dad was once GH's mayor) and the names all stuck! I am not inferring that I was the first to discover and surf the Rock Pile. The first known surfers to actually surf it as a spot were Bob Pushaw and Tommy Law. However, I was the first to start riding the 'Rights' or the waves that ran right along next to the pier to avoid the growing crowd. The other surfers thought I was nuts. In the beginning what came to be known as the 'Center Bowl' and 'Inside Bowl' were surfed. The pier waves themselves were not surfed. The pier was only used to access the bowls and eliminate the tiresome paddle out with the newer, but harder to paddle shorter boards. During most of the 1960s the main purpose of the piers for surfers was to block wind and chop. Surfers always rode the cleaner waves on the lee sides of piers, which is still true today, except for spots like the Rock Pile. Back then the boards were 10ft+ and much easier to paddle. Surfers were looking for long, clean breaking waves. With the shorter boards in the 1970s they didn't 'carry' on a waves as easy as the long boards, so we began to favor wave power rather than cleanliness. The wedging caused by waves compressing into the pie and rebounding created the power we sought. There are many, many interesting stories about the Rock Pile. My only purpose here is to tell how it was named. One interesting story regarding the name is about the Rock Pile surfer who had a girlfriend that worked at the local Dairy Queen. She made him a special shake that had everything thrown in: chunks of banana, strawberry, pineapple, nuts. He said it reminded him of the Rock Pile, so she had included it on the menu as 'The Rock Pile' Well, eventually it got carried throughout all the Dairy Queen franchises!!

All the straight guys are always saying "wrestling isn't sexual.". Well, if it isn't, then why isn't it coed? Seems to me, y'all all afraid of getting touchy with each other. Or maybe you'll afraid that some boys will get crushed by strong women (or vice versa). Pussies.

Sick wave at the 1:45 mark, actually stood up pretty nice. I think I would bust out the 6’1 Santa Cruz pumpkinseed epoxy. Never surfed in a lake, I want to imagine I could have pulled off a couple backside hacks on that wave though haha. Cheers from Carlsbad Ca.

@@dag681 One thing's for sure, the Lakes get some pretty nice waves. Actual groundswell sets that would look right at home if they were breaking on a beach somewhere along the Atlantic coast. Looking forward to seeing some more freshwater tubes anytime you post them my friend, Semper Fi!

Well, most of the time, we look for a wind that blows 30mph for about 24 hours, or more. You can ride that on shore stuff, but the really great stuff is for about two hours AFTER the wind stops, along protected peninsulas of land. Longest wave I've ever ridden was in the UP, and I lived in Hawaii 15 years. BTW, would much rather be riding wind blown junk in Hawaii...lol.
@chrisnizer1885
@chrisnizer1885 5 лет назад
@@dag681 I understand perfectly. I would take windblown, onshore junk in Hawaii any day too. But surfing in the Great Lakes? That's inspiring. I had more fun watching your video than watching Hawaiian surfing, no doubt. Ride waves wherever you find them my friend and thanks for the excellent video.
