Greetings my brothers and sisters! I have been cultivating oyster mushrooms for sale at the local restaurants, groceries, and farmers markets since 2008.
Can anyone start a mushroom business?
Most people can make a grow space in their home for a small scale /part-time business where you may only sell to one market or a couple of restaurants every week or two. A full time business does require proper growing environments indoors (like a proper basement). I don't recommend outdoor setups as they are much more prone to bugs/weather issues and really need gothic greenhouses to maintain proper conditions.
Innoculated a woodchip bed recently. They've been tearing up the bed digging and making holes exposing the mycelium..likely looming for acorns but I'm sure they'll enjoy the mushrooms when they show 😓
Hmm I am starting a morel grow zone, looks like it needs to be squirrel and deer proofed. I live in the country so that would be a major concern when growing my harvest of tasty morels.
was trying to VERIFY if Deer ate mushrooms (a suspicion of mine). I have HERDS of them (and ensuing Lyme disease) Because this past Spring I looked for Morels -all conditions were prime-temps/trees/rainfall BUT DID NOT find a one. So it could be the squirrels? But do the Deer eat them also? please let me know so I can give up tromping in the Poison Ivy and Tick infested woods!
Peter Magermans well then it makes sense. Because ALL the CONDITIONS were perfect for shrooms BUT I did not find one! and the ones I do see-I wonder if they are edible BECAUSE they ARE not eaten. Same with BERRIES. if the birds don't eat them-then neither am I!
Old timer morel hunters confirm that deer do indeed eat morels and that is most likely the reason they are hard to find some years. Gotta get out there early!
When I was out mushroom hunting I found mushrooms with big bites taken out of them. I thought it was deer. Could have been a 5 foot tall squirrel I suppose.
