Hello, my name is Pamela and I hope I can entertain you with my videos. I am still getting comfortable doimg this so bare with me! Its nice to meet you all
Well, that was an excellent episode of The Twilight Zone, with great work by Millie... I'm not a fan of this "supernatural" kick RTD is on this series - I can't think of anything less Doctor Who, but each to their own of course. This had to be a Doctor-light episode as Ncuti was still busy shooting Sex Education at the time, but that was a wasted Doctor Who episode for me given that we only get 8 episodes a year now (plus the Christmas Special), so that's now really just seven. There have been good (and some not-so-good!) Doctor-light episodes in the past, (one good one coming up) so it can be done, and if we still had 13 episodes a year I would not be disappointed and would have enjoyed the episode for what it is, but with only eight... The next episode returns to a much more typical Doctor Who style 😀
I really loved this episode even if the Doctor wasnt really present, the story really took me on a ride. I also wish it was 13 episodes to explore this world better but i guess i have decades to catch up on anyway so its not too bad 🤣 Cant wait for the next episode!!
Sorry, long post alert!! This one was a little divisive. Some people want answers, some people like not knowing the answers. Personally, I'm in camp not knowing. We only ever got to know as much as Ruby did, no more, no less and that's what sold the episode to me. My take on it is that the Tardis landing on/near the fairy circle, AND the Doctor breaking the circle opened up the realm of the supernatural. Ruby read the first note which was "I miss you" and that invoked the curse of the Doctor disappearing. The second note about Mad Jack connected the name of Roger Ap Gwilliam who the Doctor had just mentioned. The most important aspect of the curse is Ruby's fear of abandonment. The woman didn't need to say anything specific, it wasn't about what she said, it was about the fact that it made everyone abandon Ruby. As she got older, just having the woman there was enough for people to leave Ruby (as we saw with the breakups). As for the pub scene, it's a small town and oftentimes people come from big cities and act like these small towns haven't caught up to modern marvels. That's why they were so tetchy about Ruby asking if she could pay by phone. They probably get visitors all the time who think they don't carry the technology and it offends them. Same with trying to frighten her, a lot of people think that small-town folk really believe in that, so they thought they'd play along not realizing that Ruby really is living that out.
Oh this makes so much sense about the woman pretty much manifesting her fear of people leaving her. Thank you for that point of view. Im gonna have to rewatch because im sure i missed so many things the first time around!
1899 was such a great show, I can’t believe Netflix cancelled it. Have you seen the creators’ previous Netflix series, DARK ? If not that would make an amazing reaction one day, it’s similar to 73 Yards but I won’t spoil how. There are a million theories about this episode but here’s mine: Firstly I think there are a lot of clues hidden in the story the villagers make up to scare Ruby. A lot of what they said ended up being true which ties into the theme of superstition this season. The woman is called Mad Jack’s herald and they also speak about a liminal space which is maybe where the Doctor is trapped. So as punishment for breaking the fairy circle and unleashing Mad Jack (nuclear war), Ruby is forced to become his herald. Literally stalking her younger self, trying to warn herself of his nuclear war. And the Doctor is banished entirely. Different punishments because one stepped on the circle and one read the scrolls. The woman we see haunting Ruby throughout the episode can’t be the same version as the one at the end of the episode who finally breaks the loop. So I think the version we see haunting Ruby is from a previous loop, one where she never stopped Roger ap Gwilliam, and where nuclear war actually broke out. So in the main timeline, they don’t break the fairy circle, and Roger ap Gwilliam only leads the world to the BRINK of nuclear war. In the first loop, they break the fairy circle, the Doctor disappears, but there is no woman following Ruby, years pass and nuclear war erupts, and at the end of her life Ruby, full of regret, is sent back along her timeline to warn herself to not make the same mistake she did. The second loop is what we see, they break the fairy circle, the Doctor disappears, and this old woman haunts Ruby, years pass and Ruby infiltrates Albion, prevents nuclear war, and at the end of her life, full of hope, she’s sent back along her timeline to warn herself not to break the fairy circle in the first place, which puts the main timeline back in place. I think people run away because they just sense something horrific and unexplainable from her and the timeline she comes from, and they somehow know it’s Ruby's fault. She’s literally a Herald of nuclear war. Even Roger ap Gwilliam himself is horrified by her. Maybe he saw visions of the harsh reality of what he’d campaigned for, or sensed that he would die in the crossfire too.
Geast reaction - RTD the showrunner deliberately won't say what the old lady says to people - and there's a few theories about what's going on here - i m going with Ruby breaks off on her own time loop to defeat mad jack. I actually noticed a few things during the reaction that i'd missed. Yes, Kate and UNIT are returning things from NuWho/Classic Who. This is more the quality of story Who should be doing - i suspect the stories that aren't up there might be partly targeting the Disney audience. Can't wait for you to start NuWho at Rose...!
Yes i noticed a few things also when I was editing and i think i might rewatch this one again. I wish they would trll us what the lady says but again. Its better sometimes to leave things unknown! I cannot wait to dive into older Doctor WHO seasons!!
It is very important to me to see other Black people react to Doctor Who, fandoms can be very isolating in that aspect, so please know I appreciate your content!
Thank you so much for that, and I feel the same, and this is a part of why I made my channel. So more people could see themselves in fandom where they feel alone. I personally never heard of black people talk about Doctor WHO but when Ncuti was cast as the Doctor, i feel like it made the show reach out to more people. He is the reason I gave this franchise a chance and I am hooked!
My HOTD Fav's and Hates Fav's in order - Daemon, Aemond, Rhaenyes, Rhaenerya, Halena , Viserys ( was number 2 ) Hates in order - Otto, Cole, Alicent ( I didn't like her since S01E4), Larris ( foot fetish guy), All the maesters, Lannisters ( Jason more )
Otto was in first place for me but Cole took the crown this episode!!! Aemond and Daemon are def top 2! Aemond just has this aura about him and I cant wait to see how his character develops in the show!
Team Black here 🖤 It was such a good 1st episode Rhaenyra & Daemon's chemistry is insane, and he had the best intentions he just f-ed up BIG time😭 Phia Saban as Helaena is incredible! She plays a beautiful Cassandra in Helaena, and you can see her watching the crib as she says she is scared of the rats. Like she is tragically calling her own visions to life
Team black all the way 🖤 Daemon and Rhaenyra together are the IT couple for the show for me. He loves her so much that he doesnt think about what hes doing....she said she wanted Aemond and he went. I hope he had asked people who were a little more capable 😬 The actrice that plays Helaena is soooo good. So fragile and yet fierce. I wonder how clear her visions are, did she already know what was gonna happen and knows she cant change it. So she only gets a feeling? I might start reading the books because I cant get enough 😝
The writer of this episode (Steven Moffat) is a name to watch out for when you start watching the 2005 series. As well as being showrunner for a time, he also wrote a number of episodes before he became showrunner (and many more as showrunner - showrunners since 2005 have always been top-class writers in their own right). Many fans consider him the best writer for the show, and for my money, this is the best episode of the current series. He also wrote this year's upcoming Christmas special. Doctor Who does not use a 'writer's room' - each story is written by a single writer (in conjunction with the showrunner) - except when the whole story is written by the showrunner.
This episode ties back to the 3 specials that were aired prior to the season, November and December 2023. The reference to the Toymaker comes from those episodes.
I loved this episode. I assumed the final number was some sort of foreshadowing being so random and out of place. Sometimes they do things that are just weird but other times it turns out to be important.
Yeah im slowly figuring that out and some people are saying the dance number is music coming back for all the time it was gone. I just wish i could binge it all, im dying to know who Ruby is!!!! 😆
Yes the premise of Doctor Who is meant to be all about the fun of being able to travel all of time and space, but the serious episodes are built towards slowly through the season. I’m loving your reactions so far. I’m so excited to see your reaction to episodes 4,5 and 6 😊
@@AnotherReactionChannel_Oh that’s amazing. Just glad you got all the context 👍 I just finished your reaction. It was wonderful seeing someone new to Doctor Who react to the new season for the first time : ) I love how much you liked the episode.
Bit of trivia: This episode was written by previous Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, who helmed the show during the 11th and 12th Doctor's eras, and if you intend to go back and watch the 2005 series, i'd say this episode is definitely one to rewatch after you've finished those two eras, because it is absolutely chock full of references and easter eggs to them that you'll have a lot of fun noticing with prior context, in fact the episode itself generally feels like it was just lifted straight from the 12th Doctor era.
Couple of quick things... 1) the idea for this comes from a part of a 1975 4th doctor story... 2) the sky boat song which the doctor whistles to let Ruby know where he is was usually played by the 2nd doctor on the recorder.. Not going to say anything about fish fingers and custard ... 😀 While it's a good episode, i don't think it's steven moffat's best episode for the show... Btw, just being curious did you do Ruby Road as a reaction or just watch it ?
I just watched it, i only realised it was part of season 14 after i watched the first 2 episodes I dont have disney and the christmas episode wasnt listed as the first episode for this season.
@@AnotherReactionChannel_ Hey! Thanks for replying! :) I loved Maestro as a villain but I LOVED Boom as an entire episode from start to finish! Without giving spoilers, Rouge is also a beautiful episode :) Overall I've really enjoyed the season and from hearing from RTD he said there is lots more to come in season two :)
Maestro was so cringe for myself and my wife. The overacting was ridiculous. Space babies was worse than this...but either way, Maestro felt very out of place for Dr. Who. I really wish they had toned the acting down a few notches and cut the music / dance routine.
I totally agree with the music routine at the end but the fact that Maestro was so over the top made it so perfect for me. I live those kinds of vilains, when they feel almost cartoony. Did you finish yhe whole season? If so which episode was your favorite? (without sny spoilers).
@@AnotherReactionChannel_ There is definitely though a difference between over the top performances and overacting which is what killed it for me. Like for example Neil Patrick Harris absolutely killed it with some over the top performance of the Toymaker but he made it work with really dialed in and controlled acting. The Maestro performance seemed like they were trying too hard. It felt unrealistic and more cheesy to my wife and I. My wife made a comment to me that it felt like watching a performer at a Halloween haunted house that is REALLYYYY trying to play the part but its so obvious they are acting that it loses its immersion. As for the entire series, yes, I like the cosplay type episode if that says anything without spoilers.
@@AnotherReactionChannel_ Maestro was definitely written to be this over the top. The character was planned already but largely written for Jinkx Monsoon based on an extreme character she plays in one of her shows that Russell T Davies went to see. Since you liked her, if you ever get to see one of her shows I'd highly recommend it, her voice is incredible, and she's hilarious. She's on Broadway at the moment, but does do world tours.
My daughter is a major fan of Jinkx so obviously this was her favorite episode ... till 'that' episode came along.(can't say cause of *spoilers*) Even though I like musical numbers, this one was not my favorite. Yet I do have to say, every episode from this season so far, got better and better - for me that is - and I hope it will be the same for you. And ofcourse, after when established if this show is indeed your cup of tea, and in waiting for the next season, you might want to dive in the first series starting with 'Rose'.
Doctor Who often has a lighter campy energy, but Space Babies and The Devil’s Chord are definitely on the more extreme end of that spectrum. The show also goes to darker and serious places, including episodes later in this season.
I indeed saw it coming in earlier in the movie. This is apparently Arkasha Stevenson film directorial debut. It's a fantastic first go. The casting and their performance was amazing! The cinematography was beautiful and the score was *chef's kiss*. I enjoyed this quite more the Immaculate. You should definitely now check out The Omen. I loved your reaction, by the way!
I didbt know it was her directorial debut!!!! I assumed it was someone who had been around. This is amazing, the movie was so beautiful to watch. I am planning on watching all of The Omen movies on the channel. Thank you for watching ☺
I love this episode. Maestro is glorious. The whole season is anomalous for reasons that have not been made entirely clear, yet, and musicals numbers are not usually a thing. I would have been happier with the song and dance number if it were a better song. I had no problem with the town celebrating the return of music, like in Footloose, celebrating the return of dancing to the town. Doctor Who has always been sort of a mix of genres. You can be in some space fantasy on a foreign planet a million years in the future or in some gothic horror story in the 19th century. Your emotions will run the entire gamut.
So, without giving spoilers, the last time the Doctor defeated one of the Gods, the God's residual power remained for a short time after, and the right people could take advantage of that. My take on this ending is the Doctor did tap into Maestro's residual energy, and had 18 years of missing music to fast track. The song at the end is primarily twist, but it does also have hints of many other musical elements from those "musical wilderness" years. So my thoughts are the Doctor used that song to fast track music back to how it should have been in 1963.
they said in a behind the scenes video the banishing of maestro and the release of music back into the world all at once was the explanation for the musical scene
I agree with you I liked the episode and the Maestro right up until the Doctor broke the fourth wall and the ending really took me out of it it was unnecessary after the defeat of Maestro they should had cut it there with the Doctor and Ruby leaving the TARDIS for the next adventure and left it there.
Yes!!!!! I already dont like musical numbers but this one felt like there was no reason for it. It was so out of place. Someone said the next episode has a more serious tone so im looking forward to that 😁
This is the episode i have real issues with - mainly the dance number at the end for noreal reason (as said in other comment it's being taken as music flooding back into the world, i m less convinced). Maestro is a great villian and for me the high point of the episode. The song that annoyed Maestro will make morev sense if you've watched the church on ruby road - which i think you sad you have done now. Fo me the gags aren't working hthis season - they do usually get sprinkled in the show to balance the seriousness of most of the stories but the show can tackle just about anything comedy, drama, heartbreak, hortor, mythology but not until now (really) musicals.... There's a few easter eggs dotted around this episode - the old woman at the piano is June Hudson, the costume designer on the show during the 4th doctor era in the 70's... - playing the piano during the twist number is Murray Gold, the show's composer - and the 2024 scene echos a scene from a particular 4th doctor story about which il'll not comment further ... Loving the reactions and hope you did see Ruby Road and continue to start back from Rose in 2005...
Yes i watched it this week end and im getting more context from it. Im mad i didnt know that the christmas special was basically episode 1. That musical ending was not for me at all hahahaha. Even if it was about music coming back....it felt just placed there for no real reason. Maestro, what more can I say im in love. They really brought this episode to life for me. I am planning on watching the okder doctors on the channel. I have heard they have more of a serious tone so im looking forward to that. I have a feeling that since this doctor seems younger in age and its on disney its a lot lighter than the others seasons maybe? Thank you for watching im glad you like my reactions....im slowly getting more comfortable with them. 😆
Yes, theres a feeling that they've deliberately made the doctor lighter for the disney audience - theres an explanation but it would be a spoiler 😀 Ruby Road feels like a decent (but by no means the best) episode 1 of an era so Space Babies was a real disappointment - but having thought about it, i think they've deliberately done it for an initial win of the "typical" disney audience. This series does get more serious as we go along😀 One thing i forgot to mention is that i think that chord John & Paul play to vanquish Maestro is i think supposed to be the chord at the end of the Beatles song "A day in the life" - famously i believe the longest recorded piano chord ever. BTW have you noticed something other than the doctor/ruby/tardis that's in all 3 episodes so far by any chance😀
Maestro was the best thing about this episode but yeah the musical number at the end felt a bit goofy. I guess it could be seen as all the music coming back into the world. This season definitely starts to get more serious from the next episode onwards, but yeah in general it feels lighter in tone than the 2005 version, which had its silly moments too. Btw the Doctor used to travel with his granddaughter Susan back when the show started in 1963 so that’s why she gets a mention.
Maestro was phenomenal!!!! 😍😍 I dont mind silly moments. I actusllt like it but i guess this one is on Disney so maybe they made the beginning light. But i eill welcome a more serious tone for sure hahaha The 2005 one is definitely on my list 😁😁
Yeah you definitely have to take a break from the true crime every now and then. Too much of the reality of what happens in this world seeps into you and you have to expel it. Maybe if this cast was a little more intuitive they wouldn't have messed with those doggone cards (but then we wouldn't have this horror movie).
The reality of the world is scarier than any horror movie lol and yeah. Their intuition was so off. She even said its bad luck to read from someone else deck 😆 but yeah we need those bad decisions for a movie haha
Welcome - it's gonna be a bit of a ride! As peope have suggested watching the Church on Ruby Road is the thing to do next to get a good starting point - hopefully after the finale you'll go back to the 2005 series and catch up from "Rose". (Best NOT watch the 60th anniversary specials (ie 1-3) at this point). Ruby Road is special 4 on Disney+ i believe.
What I like about watching at home you can go back and replay. I got up close to the screen to see the beast burning and it indeed had the head of a canine. Its definitely not a earth jackal and it is huge. Earth jackals are tiny. Btw if they make a sequel to this I want st least part of it to show us flasbacks. We need to see how that crazy cult made that pact with satan to summon the beast. We need to see how they went about this. Obviously the devil put his soul into it and when it was burning left.
I agree with the others that the Church on Ruby road would be a good one to watch next. You'll get the answer to the flashback sequence, and an introduction to Ruby's mum and grandma. The episode numbering is so weird. Because the Christmas special is technically outside of season 1, it's sometimes considered episode zero. Interestingly on Disney+ they changed the Church on Ruby Road from a special to Season 1 Episode 1, which really confused everyone haha. Some people consider this series 14, but Disney and the BBC are calling it season 1, then the episodes are numbered differently. 😂😂😂. Oh all of that and I forgot to say, Great Reaction!! Subscribed and looking forward to the next one.
