I recently bought one. Worth every cent. Lights up very large area and much brighter than my 12V Bosch worklight. Costs only MYR142 or 30 USD here in Malaysia.
nice review...question...so I already have a power cable ran in my truck from the battery, looks like the same connection at the back of the radio. Are they pretty standard? should just plug into what I have now I assume? Thanks!!
I have the same DMM for my iPhone & was thinking about doing this exact set up for a future mobile unit. The only thing is, I’ve never done any wiring (especially through a firewall) so that has me a bit nervous. Great set up though - hope to have something like it soon in my 2020 TRD OR!
Open the hood and take a look at the driver's side firewall. There is a black grommet that's pretty easy to access. I used a utility knife and made a small slit in the grommet and then ran the wires through the firewall to the battery. Be very careful doing this as there are a lot of wires running through that same grommet so if you slip on the utility knife you could have some issues. There may be other grommets on the firewall that are less risky so look around. In my experience with wiring up radios, you want to go directly to the battery for the positive and the ground. You also don't want to snake the wires around a bunch of electronics and stuff in the engine bay as it can and will introduce noise. One thing to notice that if you decide to install the radio in the back like I did, you will need to extend the power and ground wires as they will not be long enough. I gave this set up quite a bit of thought and I'm really happy with it many months later. Best of luck with your setup!
Agree with comments about persistence. Especially getting the new bearing on. Walk away 2-3 times but keep at it. Something about trying just slightly different ways off pulling or wiggling does the trick.
Quick question, whats the measurement from your truck bed to the top of the opening of the canopy when the rear door is open? Im wanting to g to go with a smart cap on my Tacoma but want to put in a freedom coast l-track with bike mounts in the box and not sure if there will be enough clearance. Thx!
It is awful. This umbrella is long gone in favor of a Tropishade 11' Sunbrella with no tilt mechanism. The canopy is black and hasn't faded in over 3 years. It stays on the deck 365 days a year. They aren't cheap but they last and won't sag on a cheap tilt mechanism!
Did mine in about 15 minutes. Longest part was trying to get it on the shaft. My bearing actually came out of the part when I took a break, put some more grease on and put the part on over and it went on fairly easy. If you can take the bolt off, you can swap the part. Take your time it’s easy
But you should have the ability to close the umbrella if a storm or high winds should approach your environment. If the umbrella cannot close and it gets caught in high wind, it could cause personal injury to someone or it could damage other property.
This is Fing genius. I was going to try the JB Weld and fuse the thing together, but this WORKS! I keep a 1/4" socket drive with a 8mm socket handy, loosen just a bit, and they slide down the pole, and then crank the thing shut. When the wind calms down, slide them back up and tighten. Genius!!!
I ended up putting Sherpa racks on the truck and they do not line up. In order to clear the side doors, the rails need to be shorter than the rails for the rack on the truck cab. The rack on the cap is also ~0.5" taller than the rack on the cab. I thought it would bug me but it doesn't. Very functional. When opened, the side doors on the smartcap come in contact with the rack but only on the rear corner of the rack. I put some foam tape on the rack in the rear where it hits the door and now have no issues.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I was under the impression from other videos that the LM487 was the cure all. But I plugged mine in, and had problems with pressing the brakes and all the turn signals coming on, I appreciate the help, this will be the next thing i do to try and fix this.
