Author, speaker, whistleblower and award-winning director Mark Vicente was behind the sleeper hit WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW?! Growing up during the Apartheid era in South Africa and its widespread iniquities, Mark learned early on to question fundamental assumptions and beliefs about human behavior. While that curiosity served him well, it also led him into direct contact with truly malignant personalities masquerading as forward-thinking philosophical leaders teaching self-improvement while inflicting unthinkable damage to their followers.
His defection from the NXIVM cult was chronicled in the HBO series THE VOW. Mark and a few courageous whistleblowers exposed the criminal activities of this organization, resulting in multiple arrests and indictments. Mark is currently in production on a number of films including one on Narcissism, called “Empathy Not Included” On his podcast; “WTF is on my Mind?!” he unpacks cults, coercion, trauma, spirituality, science, consciousness and media.

Can you do a video/commentary about the recent democratic strategy of 'that is weird" tactic when pointing out behavior of the GOP and presidential ticket? Once I heard it this past week I thought immediately to Bonnie and you during the THE VOW. I remembered that scene of how the therapist that worked with Bonnie said she couldn't point out things directly to you because you would resist it so she started with questions and asked how ~"odd things were" to get you to see it. I feel y'all are the more versed in this perspective tactic and why it is so successful with "anchor bias", "backfire bias", 'likability bias", etc. --- LOVE Y'ALL work and the impact you have on the globe.
I was told by a friend after I had just come out of a relationship with a narc psychopath that he was “just a spark of light like the rest of us” … I mean, sure .. but we are humans living here on earth not sparks of light at this monent . He tells it from the perspective of an innocent boy tasked to guard sheep from wolves and when he tries to warn the townsfolk of a wolf. They don’t even bother to do a thorough search. Instead of painting the boy to be a liar, it’s a more in-depth look at very irresponsible townspeople.

Society including myself gave cult followers the benefit of the doubt for a while, but it's pretty obvious that some people are more vulnerable or less responsible than others. People who are born into cults and escape I have a lot of respect for. People who are desperate for help and suspect their disbelief in joining because they don't have other options I have sympathy for. People who join because it was a silly lapse in judgement, they didn't think it would get out of hand and they wind up being horrifically abused I also have some sympathy with. Mark Vicente is none of these. It doesn't fit the profile for a cult survivor. He demonstrates behaviours of a much more willing participant who is aware of all the facts and ok with them. Why would he wake up to Grannon? Grannon has gotten his tiny channel more views than any of his solo videos or any of his other questionable guests. Vicente latches onto the big players. He wrote that creepy comment about potentially getting naked for Grannon, well maybe Grannon was grossed out by that comment too and Vicente is the one who would like that. I'm not sure Bonnie would mind as I suspect she's checked out of that marriage. They're both creepy guys so to the subscribers who pay for their teachings - Don't give them any more money, hide your jewellery and seek help using safer methods. These are not the men for you. They can't even fix themselves.

Have you read George Orwell’s book 1984? Yeah. The thing is we in the USA were required to read this book in high school as part of summer reading requirements. Have you ever considered talking to Robert Sapolsky, a biologist and anthropologist. He studied baboons for decades, they too use manipulation for power and live under social hierarchy systems. He's very insightful and I'm curious what he thinks about cults, coercive control, psychopaths, narcissists, etc. He's close friends with the actor Alan Alda, and he went on his podcast twice, clear and vivid. It would be so interesting to hear you two converse.
My comment and question is for the guest, Adam, in regards to how he feels about both major political parties in the US. How does he know that not voting is not part of the propaganda machine? Someone must be benefiting from people not voting, and often, that's the authoritarian side because their goal is to suppress any possible opposition, and hence they want to get rid of democracy. You two are very lucky and privileged to have the option to move out of the country when there's trouble. Not all of us can afford that. A person that never apologizes is a person who doesn’t want to accept accountability for their actions and that person is called a Narcissist. It’s an actual symptom of the diagnosis (check the DSM-5). When dealing with cults it’s the ultimate solution. Deny responsibility and don’t take accountability for anything you do to anyone.
