Finally, I've been searching for this exact type of advice for so long! My son has ADHD Tourettes and OCD and there is nothing like this out there. I needed detailed advice like this! Going to try the dried fruit thing. Did yours struggle with learning how to read? My son understands the concepts but the reading triggers all his tics and compulsions and it takes him forever to read aloud. He can read better in his head though.

Also, looking for the learning in these challenging situations and realising that its the life skills, character building and development of dispositions that often comes from these times that are just as important (or I would say much more important!) than the academic stuff. Its in these times that we have an opportunity to support our kids to become awesome, resilient, empathetic humans. This last year we had a challenging time too as I had my own health issues and I had a lot of guilt about letting the kids down and not doing 'enough'. A wonderful homeschooling friend helped shift my perspective pointing out my kids were learning how to care for someone, how to be more independent, how to come together and support a member of their family who needed some extra care... They were experiencing what it looks like when a family and friends band together to support one another during harder times. I thought she is so right! I was able to then allow my family including my kids to take care of me and gave them the chance to be independent and step up. I watched as they really shone embracing this caretaking role and supported each other as well as me. I chose to see the beauty and learning that was unfolding. I've also learnt to accept there will always be an ebb and flow; there are seasons when it feels like we're not living our best homeschooling life but I can sit a little easier in these times knowing it will pass and we always get our groove back. So glad you are getting your groove back and pleased to hear you and your family are well.

Hello ! Loved your tips, but it was so hard to follow your video because I have ADHD and there was nothing written. It would have been much easier for me if one or more of these things where present : - a page between tips with the tip written down - subtittles - a small summary of the tip (before, while or after the tip) - a few words of what you were talking about next to you I know it requires a lot of editing (so a lot more work) Thanks for taking the time to read this comment

My preteen kids can write me a 5 paragraph essay about why they should keep every single item, toy, plush, lego, doll, box, etc….. they are unconsciously practicing maximizing and I let go of all that is mine and it wasn’t enough because they have only filled the void with more of their precious lifelong items. What can I do? I can’t stand the clutter and I feel like I am clutter because it’s everywhere.
@HinterlifeHomeschool
@HinterlifeHomeschool 8 месяцев назад
I understand how this feels and it sounds so easy when talking about decluttering but the reality is it’s hard to let go of our things, this is especially true for our kids. Despite the fact they may never use these items! I recommend you go check out Clutterbug on RU-vid. She has some great approaches I’ve implemented with my kids and it’s incredibly helpful. Good luck!

I would love to dive into something my son is interested in. I try to get his input and he says he’s not interested in learning anything so I’m going to have to pick things myself for a while. I’m not sure what to pick though. He’s 10. We have a lot of struggles with getting things done. We are on year two of homeschool. It’s so hard to not get frustrated when it’s taking him two hours to complete 10-12 math problems (yes I give breaks but not so much that it should take two hours 😩)
@HinterlifeHomeschool
@HinterlifeHomeschool 8 месяцев назад
I understand, hang in there you’re doing great! A couple strategies I use is I take my kids out for milkshakes and we chat about what they’re interested in ( not what they want to learn) this helps take the pressure off. I then keep interested in those things with my kids, I ask questions to learn more and ask if they can teach me too. Eventually I find something they need help with and that’s where I focus. Explaining how learning this can make you better at the thing you’re interested in. I build on that! The math must be frustrating for your son too! I’d start a discussion around this and decide on an amount of time you’re both happy to spend on math. Put a quiet visual timer on. Offer rewards to keep him motivated, don’t expect him to get it all done in the time allocated, instead start cheering him on to get as much as he can in that time done. See if he improves with these changes. If he’s not, drop down a grade in the work. See if that makes a difference. I hope this helps!

Amazing information! This has been very informative and I can’t wait to implement this with my ADHD + Dyslexic 10 y/o. She has been going to public school pre-K-recently and this coming school year will be our first year homeschooling. She’s going into the 5th grade and really has done an absolute wonderful job the past few years public schooling despite her learning differences. Her school and teacher have been amazing in helping us as her parents, doctors and therapists in creating and working her IEP plan. She’s come so far and is actually excelling academically. Unfortunately tho, we are a military family and will be relocating to a new state. I’ve been considering homeschooling for some time and rather than putting her in a new public school, I really think homeschooling would be more beneficial to her and this video just gives me so much hope that I am on the right path with her and it can actually be done successfully. Thank you so much!

I've been looking for information about homeschooling because I'm considering it with my children. I was diagnosed last year at 39. I have lived all my life trying to "FIX" myself. Before releasing what's going on, I tried to fix my children as well, trying to make them fit in a system that I don't understand (literally, I was born in Italy and did all my school year there, but I'm also an Australian citizen and I've been struggling so much to understand school here, so It's been even more challenging for us) a system that doesn't take into consideration Neurodiversity in so many ways. Thank you so much for this video; it made me emotional and more determined to help my children have an environment where they can flourish.

Nice to see you back! I've missed your videos. School hasn't gone back yet in NZ but we have started a slow start back into our homeschooling rhythm and it has felt so good for all of us. Really gentle with lots of adventure and outdoor time, we have chosen something we are all interested in to focus on together and are reading lots and snuggling up with snacks to watch related programes (always the preferred way of learning in this house so the perfect motivator!), dabbling in a bit of light creative writing, nature journaling and setting up some structure with our morning circle and morning basket time.. Something we always come back to throughout the year during all the ebb and flow. Having tried a looser 'unschoolery' approach toward the end of last year we have come to a place now in our journey where we know we do best with some routine and structure to our days. Also finding that balance between child led learning and setting some expectations around giving effort and doing things that might feel a bit like hard work to grow and learn new and wonderful things.

Hi Belinda! That is a book called cooking class global feast and it is used in level 4 blossom and root language arts ( the workbook to go with it) if you have younger children you could absolutely just get the cookbook. It’s so much fun! I have our back story on why we started homeschooling on my blog: www.learnfreely.app/post/the-damage-school-can-do we continue to homeschool because it allows us to be truly together as a family, we love learning so much that school just doesn’t make sense to us anymore. ❤️ thank you for watching!

Wow def got emotional towards the end. My son goes to a public school and because I know he has ADHD I have been considering home schooling my son to work with him more one on one and look up tips and ways to help him be himself without so much restriction. It’s been hard to watch him struggle and having his teachers telling me he might be behind because he cannot focus or comprehend. Watching this encouraged me to follow through with home schooling and dealing with ADHD in a different light.
