I saw a mainstream TV documentary a few years ago about Netherlands 1974 WC team. Rob Rensenbrink said that at 1-0 up Cryuff told the team on the pitch that it wasn't enough to win, they had to put on an exhibition. Rensenbrink finished by saying "we forgot we had to win first". He made little effort to hide his annoyance at Cryuff. Interestingly, when the final whistle goes, the Dutch dont look remotely bothered.
One if not the greatest World Cup , 86 was also fantastic & 78, but this Brazilian team is and always will be the most beautiful & artistic side ever , everyone in my junior school was always these players when we played football at dinner time , all you would hear is Zico, Socrates, Eder, Junior, Falcao, Cerezo we would all pretend to be players from 82 Brazil !!!! Hursts second was definitely a goal, Hunts reaction and lack of follow up proves this and footballers were honest then and Hunt confirmed this after the game it was well over the line. The camera angles were poor and can distort the view and modern technology can't prove either way. It does look from the raw footage that it crosses the line and remeber the backspin makes the ball bounce back out at a strange angle quickly after hitting the floor. Yeah the tournament that made me a lifelong fan of Dutch football. 1988. I gotta say this is by far the worst Dutch team to play in this Euro than all Dutch teams previous to this one. Depay? come on Van Dijk? bliah. Best Dutch team INHO were the 1974 &78 generation 1988 generation( Gullit, Rijkaard,koeman, Van Basten and others) and the 1998 WC semifinalist( Kluivert,Davids, Seedorf, Bergkamp, Van der Sar). Those were the best dutch teams, oh and and honorable mention to the 2010 and 14 teams( Robben, Van Persie, Sneijder).
It's amazing that nobody in the comment section seem to know (and the documentary doesnt mention it) that the Dutch only beat Ireland due to a clear offside goal. Ireland deserved to be in that semi.
What a privilege to have seen this 82 team play! Without a doubt this made a history on the WC it change what we were used to see to what a beautiful game football can be. Is the mastermind of Tele Santana and what an intelligent way to play offensively but not violent. I want to see this repeat in time … 🙏🇧🇷🎉
