It is with great sadness that we share news of Martin Evening's passing (December 2022). A longstanding member of the Association of Photographers - no 20 according to the records - and hugely influential, Martin helped so many photographers make the transition from analogue to digital.

Martin wanted to pass along a final quote…

“When I reflect back as to why my books sold so well. I don’t think it was because I was particularly smart. Sure, I was clever enough to write informatively, but this never came as easy to me as it did for others. I think the fact I nearly always found it a struggle to make sense of complicated concepts, and seek ways to explain them more clearly, was something that resonated with my readers and made my books successful.”

As they say in the Photoshop splash screen, “Gone But Not Forgotten".

Great to see Mr. Hince talking about his passion with just a short mention about Queen.

Well, having worked with Queen would give you all the discipline you’d need to succeed....handing/taking the mic with such precision...people have commented on that a lot....Ratty, back in the day, with the long hair and the tiny shorts🤩

Very sad to hear that Martin is no longer with us, I still use Photoshop CS5 and I bought Martin's book on the subject a good few years ago now but it has helped me so much for which I am so grateful. You will be sadly missed but never forgotten. RIP Martin

I hadn't heard that Martin had died. Looking at my book self, my most recent edition of PFP is for CS6, and that's not because I lost interest, but because my poor eyesight was making it increasingly difficult to read the fine print. For many years, Martin was my go to source for in depth information about Photoshop and I will forever value the knowledge I gained from Martin's books and videos. One tip I remember is variation of the Patch Tool that allows you to scale down an object when placing it. The example Martin used was with a fishing boat - I wonder if anyone else remembers that video? We have lost far too many great people to cancer (Iain Banks who wrote the Culture books comes to mind). Martin lives on in his outstanding body of work and I feel privileged to learn so much from his books and videos.

I would have never guessed that Schewe would have lightened up enough for a model shoot like this. But, it shows how much of a nice guy Martin was. Definitely one of my photographic idols.

Hi, I am using Camera Raw Filter in PS. First of all, I don't see the crop tool. Second of all, when I first do an auto and I click OK to apply it, then I open Camera Raw Filter again for the same image and click auto once more, the result drastically changes. And repeating the process will keep changing the image. Why is that? Why is auto-ing the auto have such a big difference? And what "auto" is the best one?
@prostatepedallers1831
@prostatepedallers1831 4 года назад
Hi Don, Firstly, the Camera Raw as a filter does not include a Crop tool as this would conflict with cropping in Photoshop. Also, there are other things missing such as Snapshots and Workflow options. Regards the Auto Settings, this is crop dependent. Therefore, if you were to crop the image in any way, or maybe change the Transform settings, this will result in a different calculation result for the Auto Settings. Regards, Martin

@@prostatepedallers1831 Thanks for your reply. That is what confusing me. There is no crop or transformation of any kind, yet there is a difference between first auto and second one.

I wish it didn't push the vibrancy up on every single shot. Very annoying when working with subtle skin tones. Good starting point but for that.

It's true that the auto settings won't always help with every slider and for some types of work you'll always need to fine-tune. Overall, I find the auto settings tend to provide a much better starting point compared to the older plain Auto. Still some outlier fails, but I anticipate that over the years auto settings will have opportunity to be refined.

Very useful Martin. I like the timelapse effect. I saved out my images at 150dpi and 1000 pixels longest length then brought them back into LR for a slideshow. You can upload without music to RU-vid then apply their own free music so you don't get any copyright hassle ;-)

Thank you for the very informative tutorial. My photos are too small in my slide show, how do I increase the size of the photos displayed in the slideshow?
@MartinEvening
@MartinEvening 7 лет назад
Actually, scrub my last comment. While using the Zoom to Fill Frame option can be used to get images to fill the proportions of the frame, it won't help with your problem. The only solution is to render such photos in Lightroom as TIFFs, open them in Photoshop, interpolate up to a larger size and then use these in place of the originals. Having said that, you may want to consider the resolution of the final screen used to display the slideshow, if you are preparing a slideshow for export to be played on a smaller screen.

@MartinEvening

+LEON DORADO The music sound track used here was licensed from a stock library. As I recall this was distributed as an MP4 format. For the actual Lightroom slideshow I loaded this track to provide the audio track. You should be able to convert audio tracks to different formats.

Thanks Martin. I'm finding I am using de haze quite a bit to add body to my images as it does a nice job of enhancing saturation and contrast without too much blocking. A little shadow raising works nicely in conjunction..

take 2 pics only the -2 and the +2 exp. you can do a better job then, and you don't have to shoot more then 2 pics.

Martin, thanks for the video it gave me a great boost to my work. Do you know how you can create custom timelapse templates? I have a series of images that I'd like to incorporate at 3 frames per second.

i think there will never be such think, because every set photo is different, sometimes you want it on deghost, low and next set of pics maybe at none or high..
