The Fugata Quintet is named after the second movement, Fugata, of Ástor Piazzolla's Tangata "Silfo y Ondina" Suite. It is a tribute to Piazzolla's being the main influence behind the group's discrete instrumentation, but also an acknowledgement of the Quintet's principally classical character and origin, which mirrors the composer's own classical beginnings and his frequent use of classical forms and compositional techniques in his many remarkable works for quintet. However, Fugata's connection with the key elements of Piazzolla's Nuevo Tango are not limited to the classical side of this music. Much like the composer's original quintet, Fugata does not draw all of its members from only one style of music. The group's diverse musical personalities and music passions have led them to be involved in successful jazz, rock and world music ensembles.
