Tech Won’t Save Us is an award-winning left-wing tech podcast that began in April 2020. Since then, it’s gained a global listenership of tech workers, academics, journalists, and people who want a different perspective on an industry that holds so much power over their daily lives.

Every Thursday, Paris Marx is joined by a new expert to critically examine the tech industry, the powerful people who helm it, and the products and services it unleashes on the world. They challenge the notion that tech alone can drive our world forward by showing that separating tech from politics has consequences for us all, especially the most vulnerable.

Longtermism sounds like a remix of the "work hard now so that others/you somewhere in the future can life in the garden of eden." - In that sense, this world view seems very medieval as well. I know nothing though and these are just my 2 cents.

Platforms like discord still allow linking and they are all the better for it, while places like youtube do not (earlier I tried posting a link to the podcast's website) and engagement is much shallower as a consequence.

From a consumer's point of view, the inconvenience of the ad-supported model a lot of mainstream news rely on for profit vastly outweighs the importance of a news story for me. If a site is unwieldly and I get assaulted by ads, auto-playing videos, nudges to subscribe to a barrage of newsletters and so on, I just click off before I even get to the story that brought me there in the first place. It's like those recipe sites we're all familiar with. I would love to see news outlets break out of the ghoulish and predatory advertisement systems and I try to encourage people to actually pay for content, something that is a wild proposition to especially younger people who are used to everything being free online in exchange of watching a couple of ads.

One of the giveaways that Musk is surely spouting BS is the fact they have done absolutely nothing on actually living on Mars. You'd at least work out the basic (but very difficult) stuff of sustaining isolated humans. You'd start in the Sahara, or the Artic, or underwater. "How will a colony live?" Musk/SpaceX has done absolutely nothing on this, whereas for any serious effort this would be the focus (rocketry is super straightforward by comparison and a tiny, almost trivial aspect of the problem). OTOH, if you aren't actually going you don't need to bother developing any of this stuff, which is what has been happening? My bonfire is closer to Musk's rocketry than Musk's ecological effort is to living on Mars.

Great talk, thanks. A much needed correction to the ridiculous general level of discourse. I asked some space-mining advocates what they ever expected to get for all their massive undertakings. They said "platinum!" One of the main uses for platinum on earth is.......jewellery. Mining asteroids for shiny. They didn't even see how stupid this was.

I knew nothing about it until I bought a phone from a Chinese company, and some time later was browsing a different site, and clicked on an item to get a closer look, and found I had bought the item without even being asked to give an address or give an authentication. Shopify debited my card when I didn't even know who they were or how they'd got my card details! I was terrified till I realised the Chinese co must have been using Shopify, and had given them all my details. Still very wary of using them as there seem to be no failsafe checks to stop one buying stuff by mistake. Some sites give no other wa to pay though. :( :(

I think 'Don't Be Evil', was like an inside joke. And wasn't some sort of goofy, innocent, starry-eyed sentiment. They knew they were evil from the beginning. Very explicitly. They also knew, as they would, what the reigning happy and optimistic narrative or mythology of what the internet represented. And so it seemed perfect. Yeah, we're evil aright. If only you knew.

Ed sure does not know macroeconomics. The high interest rates were responsible for keeping inflation high and preventing a recession. When the Tsy issue is around 60% of GDP or higher (which it is) the government becomes a huge net payer of interest, and that interest income is a massive stimulus, but all demand for zero supply, so also one-to-one inflationary. It was obscenely regressive stimulus too, since all the interest income goes to the top end of town. _Basic income, _*_but only for people who already have money_*_ and in proportion to how much money they already have._ Also, the FED have it all backwards. Raising rates does not do a thing to fix a supply shock event. Hiring people to produce output would fix a supply shock, instead of dolling out bags of interest income to the people who already have money. The central banks around the world were all the same rank idiots slave to a false ideology of neoclassical monetarism: "Oh look, inflation is up and supply chains are broke, let's put people out of work to try fix that, and give rich folks some basic income."

_'Cultivating Fans by making them think they are smart for believing in you'_ [paraphrased] *.**37:45* is a tactic from at least the days of bottles of Snake Oil. It's also one of the more reliable indicators of trouble. Smart people don't usually worship heroes but people who wish they were smarter do. From the time before going Public, Elon Musk was making promises and claims instead of letting past EV Cars' acceleration (the GM Impact and a guy drag racing a converted EV Datsun B210) of the Tesla Roadster do all the talking. As pointed out here *41:47* Musk persistently talks as though he thinks that no one smarter than him is listening. 41:47

An entire channel about being wrong..? 1) We don't get to the point of abundance without AI and robotics providing food water and infrastructure while taking human labour to 0. 2) Because of how valuable AI is to creating abundance for everyone to live well more money and research will be put into its fuel, which is compute, and conputes fuel, which is electricity. This will get us to abundant energy far sooner. 3) To solve climate change new Inventions and ideas will be required, which will be attained when AI is smarter and more plentiful than human intelligence. How did you manage to get so badly brainwashed?
@ISureDont

I was thinking the same thing. How did you get so brainwashed? Ai has been around for a long time. Does anyone know how long this will take? No. The best thing we can do is stop all of this nonsense
@StabbyMcStabStab
@StabbyMcStabStab 2 месяца назад
@@ISureDontthat's your argument? "Just stop this nonsense?" Thanks to AI Nvidia is now far richer getting far more business and producing chips far more powerful AND efficient. The more that is invested in these areas the cheaper and more energy efficient that the tech gets, which reduces their footprint. Wanting and wishing AI development to go away is so babyish. It's not even a take, its hysterical. You're happy with most of the world suffering working hard labour jobs that could easily be done by humanoid and non-humanoid robots? You prefer that option? You're happy with so many people stuck to a computer 8 hours a day at work then just as long when they get home, not only becoming depressed but boring too? (Not to mention brainwashed by overconsumption within their echo chamber). When we can take people out of work that no one wants to do and they can concentrate and give their time to things that really matter the world will change for the better. Those that want this all shut down are the opposite of the "progressives" they claim to be, worse than that you are REgressive, looking to go back to worse times. Again, you people have no clue about the tech you seem to hate and undervalue the impact it will have on all of business and all of life for all is us, FOR THE BETTER.
@ISureDont
@ISureDont 2 месяца назад
@StabbyMcStabStab that's the same exact argument that's been used for two centuries. This technology will reduce the labor required by all. There has yet to be a case where it hasn't been taken advantage of. The easier work becomes the more we end up doing for the same amount. We work more hours than serfs did and they at least got meals. Most people i know work 10 to 12 hours six days a week. We already know how to stop global warming, feed everybody and end work. It's simply not allowed. If everyone has what they need we can't be forced into situations like the current state of America. Ai is useful but at what price. Especially with it being thrown into everything for no reason. It's like saying we have to take out this many people to save that many. There's other options. Will ai stop oil companies? Or greed? Maybe if they focused on helping us instead of stealing creative works. It's a catalog builder right now. That may change but as of yet that's what it's being used for.

microsoft has increased their energy usage by 30% since they said they would be net zero by 2030 or w/e... and yea... the explanation is basically: "yea... Generative AI being the wrong tool for information retrieval is obvious to us. But apparently, to the companies providing search results, they have been losing a war with content farms even before the generative AI arrived, and now they're losing it fast because AI can spew out as much content as you like for (currently) low costs. That doesn't mean what search providers are doing makes a lot of sense, but apparently doing nothing is also losing for them. I think that explains why we're seeing this stuff pushed by the likes of Google. And i think this type of pattern is the driver for many companies. Why is Facebook deploying this junk? Because user participation is way down, and it's a way to trigger engagement and to fake engagement.

@@vylbird8014 Yeah, the advertising supported internet always seemed like a terrible idea to me, going back to the mid-90s. I liked the idea of paying real microtransactions, fractions of a cent, for page views type things. Not to any garbage, but to legitimate sites that are worth visiting. I don't understand the obsession with our species lasting forever. It's the same sort of childish dream that billionaires have about extending their age and never dying, or that the Earth can sustain endless growth. That's how children think. Adults accept and respect limits. How about we focus on making our species' existence HERE and NOW a lot nicer? Rather than spending any time on this jagoff's adolescent fantasies?

I think it's reductionistic and too simplistic to just group all those experiences under "right conspiracies" especially when you claim that they have the feelings right but not the facts, because that implies two things (1) They're on the right direction, whatever they're criticising or implying they justified in and that (2) they're wrong about the conclusions, a claim that you didn't back in any way making Naomi sound just as bigoted as a conspiracy theorist that sounds so certain of the conclusions they've gotten to without tangible proof beyond feelings

If he did do that it would be to convince big advertisers that the platform is active enough to market to. Facebook still ranks in the top 5 sites visited and doesnt need said exposure, what they "need" is a what the metaverse was meant to be. A way to pivot old users into something that could be continually relevant in the modern "web 3" era. No amount of bots will accomplish that because said metaverse is all just speculative gambles on digital infrastructure people only plan to use for pump and dumps rather than a website/platform as is provided by "web 2". The bots we see are like mold growing on the remnants of web 2 (the social media platform) ie scammers and temu/dropshipping type of grifters who exploit the people that dont know where else to go (10:35). Zuck has no incentive to be part of this bot wave because the real money is just using all this data to sell or train AI imo
