Using the poster board to help keep the leather from stretching brought up a question. I watched a few videos of making tooled holsters and instead of taping the back of the leather being tooled they made custom fit templates that completely surrounded the piece being tooled. I asked why they did that and they said it works way better than tape. Any thoughts on that?
Man I love watching your time-lapses of the leather tooling!!! Bummed me out that it's not included in the video. I'm an absolute fan of your work and live watching your videos!
WOW!!! Just a few days ago I was showing an old plastic reciept/payment booklet to someone. I was talikng about making it out of leather because the plastic one I have is repaired with duct tape and really sad looking. Just like if you do a google search, the businesses advertise what you searched for on social your media platforms. Now I just need to order the pattern and adjust the size to fit. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world. 🤗👍😁
Other than esthetic value, what are the down sides to using the branded leather? Does it weaken or create rough spots over time/use? I think by using the branding in strategic ways increases value. Am I missing something?
I know this is an older video but well worth the time to watch. I to have two tools aways with me I very seldom use, but my grandfather gave them to me. So completely understand the sentimental value of your father’s awl. Thanks and keep up the great work educating the masses.
Enjoyed the visit with Pedro Pedrini. I have a comment about your tooling style. It seems odd to have vine work mixed in with the feathers you do so well. I'm wondering if there might be a different filler to go along better with the feathers. To me, that could be your unique "style." Does anyone else have a comment on this?
I tend to try to buy branded hides when I can. I do make mostly small items but a branded say Pony Express style satchel or large tote is always a big hit with my customers. I think If I had a bunch of brand cut outs, I'd dye and oil them and use as wall hangers.
Ehh. Leather is graded by more than surface defects Don. Holes/cuts are also part of the grade. While every tannery/retailer may have a different way to grade, holes and cuts are also part of the grading process. I agree that A/B/C may be nothing but surface defects that may be the factor, but cuts and holes are too. Belt makers are concerned with brands too, as it looks bad on a belt and also ruins a prime part of the hide we want to use too.
Hey, Don I have question??? Something I was thinking about-- when and if you use a groover, then maybe a bevler, for stitching run, will the beveled grooved line break down on surface, down the road?? I know it's gotta make leather little weaker in the area... thanks..
Thanks, Don for great vid!! Will add, all your vids have been very informative, and extremely useful... also, as a newbie, and being disabled, money is tight trying to get started.. glue for example, is expensive.. seeing other glues, not necessarily sold at leather supplies, are cheaper and great to know it can be used, without sacrificing your leather.. hope you keep making vids!! Bout watched all of them, some several times!! Lol. Im fellow Texan, do you ever do , on-sight tutorials, like Aron at Makers?? Sure would enjoy watching and learning, in person!! Thanks, again . Have great day!
Making one now with my 17 year old son for his FFA project. We're using your pattern pack and the material pack. Any chance on a pattern pack / video for a leather halter?
Great vid, tutorial.. Thanks!! Question-- could you line one of these with, Shearling?? And, lol. How hard would it be to hand stitch one of your scabbards?? As you can tell, I'm newbie.. but learning everyday.. I learnt about you from, Makers.. glad I found your tutorials!! Did subscribe... Thanks again for your very talented craftsmanship ...
Maybe I'm not understanding how a saddle bag is supposed to sit on the horse, but that yoke length seems short for each bag laying on the side of a horse? Help would be appreciated, I've had some people interested in saddle bags
