We're homesteaders, Mike and Jessie, married for 20 years, two daughters and at a point where we decided that keeping up with the Jones' and running the rat race to get ahead wasn't worth it any more. After getting out of the military, we decided to go back to Square One, in South Central Arkansas, where self-sufficiency is the key and going back to our roots is the way we live forward. We weren't raised this way and homesteading doesn't come natural to us any more than it comes natural to others diving off into this journey. We are making a whole lot of mistakes, but learning all along the way.

We hope you like what you see, will subscribe and follow this journey along with us. We will have regular vlogs, a few how-to's, lots of projects and just simply the details behind us building a farm.

We Love Mail!

The only benefit of the wire would be as you lift the tractor all the quails come with it but I see the Quail love to scratch the ground and if there’s wire they can’t do that.

Rat habitat. All of that space under the coop is rat & snake habitat. I had a rat move onto the property last week & my dog has been searching daily but it gets across the property line before she can get it.

Mine bogs down still after a new carb. New plug gas is good it'll run trim for a few minutes then dies . I'll fire it up then as I pull the trigger it bogs down . Fuel or filter?

Unfortunately my chick is almost 4 weeks old before I saw her seriously splayed leg. She can manage walking but the leg is dragging more towards the back. Can I use your method or do I have to do something more drastic?

Just had to come back to say thank you. Long time ago, had no choice but to take it to a shop and pay 5x what it cost to just buy parts and do it myself. Appreciate the step by step. 👌

This was the first video of yours I've seen, had a good chuckle at your do's and don't, glad you didn't edit and showed the stuffed up end result, much more realistic and makes me not feel so bad about a few projects I've done that have not quite turned out as planned 🫣

Now go back and cut a 4-inch hole in 2 places on the top of the plastic feeders, and put a PVC tube in it. PVC tube with holes in the side to let feed out, about 2 inches up. You can pour feed in from the top - no need to even go into the cage! And you will have to put in feed a lot less often.

If you put a box across the back with a door to open and shut on the box then in the morning before you move them their in the box and you move the tractor and then let them out. Just an idea

Don't put holes in the ends. The quail will sling the the food out that way. If you leave feeder ports only along the sides, less will be slung outside the feeder.

Where do you get the vitamins? We have a 6-week old Black Australorp that is limping. She barely can stand very long. Her feet look fine, no bumble foot. Not sure what to do

Some chicken farmers to protect from predators lay wiremesh on around the outside perimeter of the cage going out about 2’ on the ground and stake it down. It’s usually hinged around the base so you can unstake and fold it up ⬆️ when you move the tractor. In theory, the predator could tunnel 2’ under the mesh but I don’t think it happens🐣

I feel you a hundred percent. I rescued 32 alpacas total and alot of info out there is not correct. low maintenance and low cost feeders yeah. I've had them for 7 yrs and know the heartache your talking about. I have 21 currently and was forced to research, research and research relentlessly to the point of driving myself, my family and vets insane on this journey. I'm still learning everyday but have an ok handle on diagnosis now. Needles will always be an issue for me, but im far from an expert. I love them dearly and unfortunately don't have the perfect location for them. They would be easy if you have an alpaca vet, perfect hay, water, grasses and dry land without deer, slugs, snails and no toxic vegetation like most weeds even types of grasses, leaves and mushrooms...and great with needles lol. It's definitely not an easy journey. I'm sure it was a hard decision.❤

Very informative. We have chicks after not having them for quite awhile. We’ve never had a splayed leg chick. The store owner told us something about a shot glass and of course our eyes crossed😅. So I went to RU-vid for the rescue! I didn’t have the right size hair band so my husband took a extra fuzzy pipe cleaner and loosely wrapped each end on each leg. So far it’s great, but he did get some small thin hair ties and later we will put both feet in loop and use about 1” wide bandaid to wrap between legs. Miss Penny is a Rhode Island Red and she is resting comfortably in her own box Inside listening to a Spring Peepers CD on low😂😂😂. I will change out the pipe cleaner hobble later to the hair band as I think it’s a bit too restrictive and heavy as I did see her resting with her feet out behind her and flat on chest and neck. I put a temperature controlled seed heating mat Halfway under cardboard box set at 85*F and put paper towel on bottom of box. A small saucer of water tilted a bit and a flat rock in saucer so she doesn’t drown. I can only imagine how hobbling might feel and the lighter the better on small birds. We got the chicks Tuesday and just finished enclosing coop minutes before-don’t ask me why we waited, but it’s done. I didn’t understand about shot glass and splayed legs and now I am educated. We had cold night last night and one more before FINALLY SPRING warmth arrives- Hooray! Lol, my husband took the original 20 Reds home and I was at store and did some shopping and brought home FIVE MORE Dominiques!! 😂😂. They were a couple days older I was told, but the Reds were a bit more aggressive at first with them. Apparently Dominiques are very docile. Well Spring is starting out very busy and hope Miss Penny is cured soon. The worst that could happen is she learns to chirp like a frog at her rehab spa😂😂

THANK YOU for your honesty and sharing what you learned. We are in western WA and have owned alpacas for 16 years and have operated an alpaca rescue for 11 years. So refreshing to hear how important it is for vets, mentors and learning about caring for these unique animals that, as you stated, are NOT typical livestock!
