Hi, I’m Yewfie! I’m a nostalgia junkie that makes videos about retro gaming and retro tech! I’ll be uploading retrospectives, challenges, unboxings, and more, so if you enjoy any of those kinds of videos feel free to get comfy and chill for a little while! 🩷
Something that I discovered this past year- Duckstation is available for Android and any bluetooth compatible Playstation controller can be paired. I grew up right around the GBC/Advance so I found it really dope to be able to play OG Playstation stuff on a "handheld" haha
It would have made more sense if you bought a PS Vita since it's backwards compatible with PSP games, so you get to play both PSP, PS Vita and PS1 games as well, some people have even managed to make PS2 games work on it. Try to aim for consoles with lots of backwards compatibility, that way you get to play lots of games from across multiple consoles on a single device, less game console clutter and more accessibility.
i had two as a child each one gifted to me by my parents. i completely trashed them. i have them still but they're broken to shit. now as an adult, i want it again. children are so stupid. im so glad you got your hands to it! it's one of my dearest friend
personally i've been more fond of using my PS Vita for the same sort of modding, I can mod it to be able to play PSP games, Vita, PSX and still have room for emulation, it's pretty amazing you can still do this on the PSP though!
The PSP won the 7th gen handheld war in my country, so every kid I knew, including me, had one from 2008-2012. I loved this little guy, it got me into retro gaming and JRPGs, as well as into jailbreaking tech. Still probably the best handheld I ever owned, with 3ds being a very close second.
Gotta say, if you have the budget for it I think the best all-rounder in terms of emulation is the Steam Deck (OLED if possible). I had a LOT of emulation handhelds in mind but once I bought that one I simply stopped looking, it's almost flawless. If it's too big though I would highly suggest a PSVita, it's probably my favorite console from the main guys ever, love that thing with the OLED panel and so on xV
This came to my recoms and ya know what, it had me bustin out my old psp again. The paint on the battery casing has flaked, and I think it's due for a housing change. And a mobo battery swap as well since it won't turn out :'> grats on the psp! mine has been with me for 13 years!
$150 is way too much, I've bought PSP Go for like $30 in a very good condition, and getting a new case+screen would still cost you way less than $150. GBA emulstion is great aside from one single game I've met: Shantae. It's either glitchy, or slow, or both depending on emulstor. P. S. After playing native games you'll also start to treasure how fast it is to get them running comparing to tedious process on 3DS (take MicroSD out, copy files, put it back, wait for them to install up to 1-1.5 hours for a ~1 GB game).
I actually have both the first get PSP and PSV laying around, though I never bothered to homebrew with them. I was fine with the stock official experience (games, obviously, but I also used my PSP as a very heavy music player in school and on the go). I have heard that the PSP is still a popular homebrew machine to this day, which is kind of remarkable considering its age.
Another cozy video by Yewfie 👏🏽 Here's some games to look into that may be of any interest: LocoRoco, LittleBigPlanet, Sonic Rivals 1 and 2, Burnout Legends & Dominator, God of War and the Need for Speed games!
When PSP came out i was working at a video game company and it was all the rage with my coworkers, but i opted for a DS instead. I dont regret my decision but the PSP just looks like such a high-end device. Even 20 years later it looks like total luxury.
I don't know how RU-vid recommended your channel to me, as it's been years since I've used my PSP (almost forty now and I used mine so much in my 20s that the battery can barely hold a charge). I modded mine to run UMD Images, never had emulators on it, but wanted to leave feedback for your question at the start there. Even after this many years, the startup is very smooth and seamless and the interface reacts sharply (mine's a white one and I use the lime green interface for it), so I think that delay isn't as much Software related as it is just wear on the button pad. I remember taking it everywhere when I got it and would even use it as just a Walkman since I could easily upload MP3s to it, for people doing serious gaming I can imagine a lot of mileage went on those buttons and the joystick. Even I had some moments when I would get a bit too enthusiastic with the buttons during God of War, LEGO Indiana Jones, Wipeout or Ridge Racer. Worst offender was a Gundam fighting game I picked up from somewhere that had an all-Japanese interface, thing was so intense and frustrating I ended up deleting the image for fear I was gonna end up smashing the console on a curb or something :)))) Anyway, hope you have fun with it and maybe you can give some regular PSP games a try, they're not 90s levels of Retro yet, but we're getting there 😅
I would personally recommend investing in the main PSP library too. Soo many banger games, from GTA, to star wars, to metal gear, you really cant go wrong
Gen 3 is the GTA: San Andreas of Pokemon game, packed with variety things to do outside the main main game, all that on a hardware what they have in that time
Your 2nd hand PSP definitely is in a better shape in my PSP2000 my mom got me back then. It still works but the battery is very weak and when I lived at a host family, it received a semi visible scratch one day due to sitting in my pants pocket and I hit something while doing something in the household. It's a pretty fun system nonetheless and after a PS1 also my gateway back into the PlayStation cosmos since I'm usually also just a Nintendo, SEGA and PC guy. Its own library has some great RPGs, two WipeOut games (like F-Zero but with weapons like Mario Kart), several fighting games from all the better known series and as you know already, the homebrew community did some crazy things with it in the past. The hangers when starting your PSP could be because of a dying Memory Stick, these days however there are MemStick to Micro SD adapters, so it's pretty easy to extent your system's storage which unlike the Vita also works with stock firmware. Great pick up definitely and honestly, the light pink case suits your style, so it's all good! Miss those days when game consoles still came in various colors other than black and white.
I am most certainly interested in retro games, currently with SNES games (even though I am from the N64 gen, 1997). But wow it's awesome we both love Gen 3 Pokemon, Sonic Adventure and Luigi's Mansion! I will go ahead and sub already because I can bet the next game is going to be another we are both quite fonded to! 😁🖤
I still have a sweet spot for PSP that the Vita never filled. I look forward to some of your personal retrospectives, and you have a very nice voice. Looking forward to future videos from you.
Honestly, a Retro handheld this days are the most profitable if you don't have too much money, a PSVita too, I have a Retroid Pocket 2+ and I put over a 100 hours of gaming in it, started saving for a Pocket 4, since it can play various PS2 and GC titles
i haven't played much of this one, but the remaster of 2 on gamecube was always on during summer break; we'd turn our big crt tv out the window to face the porch, and my brother, myself, and our friends would take turns playing the rail grind races against each other late into the night.
the slowdown on boot is normal in my experience, especially if you have a larger memory card; mine has a micro sd to memory stick pro adapter with a 100+gb card and it can take it seems like 30 seconds-1 minute
Okay, so there are a few things you should probably know about PSP modding/ ownership in general. #1: CHECK YOUR BATTERY, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS OEM. They are now old enough a lot of them are starting to swell. #2: it's not recommended to use anymore than 256GB, and I found that 128GB can also induce choice paralysis. That said... #3: this thing is an offline entertainment powerhouse. I also advise utilizing it as an MP3/MP4 player during natural disasters so you can spare your phone (I recently went through Helene, and my PSP was EXACTLY this). #4: if you aren't using a PSP-1000 model, Infinity is your best friend!! #5: the 1000 thru 3000 models can do a cell phone battery mod to get a bigger battery. You have to harvest the terminal board from an OEM battery, and there is soldering required. You also lose the UMD drive (which, depending on your use case, actually extends your battery life).
My brother had his PSP since Christmas 2008 and had borrowed it for the longest time. He burned through a lot of chargers and batteries since many third party batteries for the device suck. It wasn’t until July this year I got a PSP for myself. It was a blue one I got from a Japanese seller on eBay. I bought a micro SD card, an adapter and a carrying case for it just before going on a camping trip. I received my PSP just 4 days before going on a camping trip and brought some games to go with it. I also softmodded my PSP, added some pictures and added a buttload of music on my PSP. Been enjoying my newly acquired PSP since July.
You just gave me a formula to starting up a channel. Seeing that yours was created in August. Now I'm seeing why my own channel failed. Thank you yewf for the proof I needed.
